Woohoo cool photos and videos! Awww what Jodi said in those videos. It is so great that she loves the character that much.

Re: The Little Mermaid Discussion
The artist behind the phallic imagery on the VHS cover of The Little Mermaid sets the record straight.
Long story short, nobody was fired, nobody was disgruntled, and it wasn't intentional.

Thanks Mooky for sharing that! I always knew this was an accident and an instance of people seeing things like it was the case with all the other moral panic scandals hurled at Disney in the '90s, so I'm glad this one has finally been debunked as well.

I'm not surprised it was unintentional.

I never understood the problem with this tower. You must have a dirty mind if this is the first thing that you see when you watch this beautiful poster. I also don't think that it was intentional...

Re: The Little Mermaid Discussion
I never noticed the phallic shaped tower (and I’m queer as a $3 bill), until I became aware of the controversy and the cover was replaced.
But to be honest, because there is a huge gay subculture at Disney, it wouldn’t have surprised me had it been intentional.
I thought the artwork which marked the film’s initial VHS release was beautiful, although I was disappointed in Ursula’s cover look.

I think that you have to be really stupid to drawa d1ck on a Disney cover in an intentional way. It can closes you all the doors to work for other companies no matter if you are gay or heterosexual.carolinakid wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2025 4:45 am I never noticed the phallic shaped tower (and I’m queer as a $3 bill), until I became aware of the controversy and the cover was replaced.

Re: The Little Mermaid Discussion
I don't think that's true. The gay culture is more in existence today especially from people who grew up on 90s Disney movies. Look at pics of the 80s/90s Disney team and they were very white and heteronormative. There was the occasional woman and Andreas Deja was the only gay man but he was never flamboyant or over the top like the ones today.carolinakid wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2025 4:45 am But to be honest, because there is a huge gay subculture at Disney, it wouldn’t have surprised me had it been intentional.
I've read stories that today at Disney, they only hire ethnic minorities, women, and nonbinaries. Even a white gay male is considered not inclusive enough for hire now. There was a story on Instagram about how if one person starts singing Part of Your World in the workrooms, everybody joins in singing because this crowd grew up entirely on 90s movies so I feel that shows the problem with Disney today. More fangirls and fanboys who have been hired because of the labels they apply to themselves. They lack actual talent or knowledge of animation history and production. Most of these people are hired straight from Deviantart and Tumblr and this is why the movies are so lacking now.
Re: The Little Mermaid Discussion
I was browsing a used books store, and they had a lot of DVDs, and I managed to find a sealed copy of The Little Mermaid's Platinum Edition DVD at a super reasonable price. I was super surprised to see one in store. I don't know if it's particularly hard to find, but I picked it up.

In a new interview, John Musker revealed that Howard Ashman wrote some key scenes in the film, including Ariel convincing Sebastian to help her after she becomes human, Sebastian giving Ariel advice on how to seduce Eric, and the ending where King Triton talks to Sebastian before turning Ariel into a human.

Howard Ashman is really the creator of The Little Mermaid and why it is so great. Same for Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin.

I bet some of you are familiar with this Youtube account already "Disney Ashman Demos: An Ashman & Menken Archive". There's something new which surfaced just a few days ago - a work tape of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman composing Silence is Golden (the first iteration of Ursula's song) as well as Poor Unfortunate Souls. It's amazing to listen to almost an hour of their creative session. It's like going back in time and being in the room with them! Well, I don`t want to sound condescending or smug, but that`s been well-known for years. I think it was most likely through the Audio Commentary for the movie.Sotiris wrote: ↑Wed Apr 23, 2025 8:19 pm In a new interview, John Musker revealed that Howard Ashman wrote some key scenes in the film, including Ariel convincing Sebastian to help her after she becomes human, Sebastian giving Ariel advice on how to seduce Eric, and the ending where King Triton talks to Sebastian before turning Ariel into a human.

Re: The Little Mermaid Discussion
I've been working on piano arrangements of various instrumental cues from Alan Menken's score for The Little Mermaid, and I wanted to take the opportunity to share these with you all! So far I've done the 7 main cues from the soundtrack. Having studied Alan Menken's music for many years, I felt that this format would allow the music to be appreciated in a new and unique way. It's synchronized to the film so that the timing of certain musical hits aligns with what's happening on screen - a signature "Disney" approach to soundtracks!
I'd love to hear what you think of them, and if you have any requests. Enjoy!

Funny, listening to "Eric to the Rescue," the brief bit of Ursula's theme when she crowns herself reminded me of "Dark City Treno" from the Final Dantasy IX soundtrack. Interesting. These are very nice.

I listened to all of them except "Happy Ending." They're all lovely.
