Encanto
Re: Encanto
^ It does take me an hour long to get to my job so sometimes I listen to music, sometimes to podcasts. I remember how two years ago most of the time I listened to the Frozen II's soundtrack.
I think "the big musical set piece in the middle of the film, where in the background a different kind of animation is used"? is We Don't Talk about Bruno.

They probably had a mistake or something in the original so they deleted it.

Re: Encanto
• Actress Olga Merediz has confirmed she sings in the movie. Jared Bush has also commented on it. She has to be Abuela Alma's singing voice.
• An article from Disney's official site for Latin America confirms the cast for the Spanish dub will be 100% Colombian. It also reveals singer Maluma is yet another actor to reprise his role for the Spanish dub.

It's great that you can use that time to listen to things you like. And it's what normal people do, I am the one who's weird.Farerb wrote:It does take me an hour long to get to my job so sometimes I listen to music, sometimes to podcasts. I guess you're right. I thought that song would be heard quite early in the film, but the other two ensemble numbers don't seem to fit with that description, as they clearly take place at the beginning and the end of the film, respectively, so the only possibility left is the song you mentioned.I think "the big musical set piece in the middle of the film, where in the background a different kind of animation is used"? is We Don't Talk about Bruno.
Re: Encanto
It's weird that they act like they couldn't announce that she sings in the film earlier since her name was written when they uploaded the sneak peek of "The Family Madrigal" on Youtube:

Re: Encanto
Yeah, I thought they would officially announce her casting back then through a press release, as they usually do. And now, even though they don't treat her involvement as a secret anymore, they still haven't revealed what character she's playing. Though, I think it's obvious she's doing Abuela Alma's singing voice.Farerb wrote:It's weird that they act like they couldn't announce that she sings in the film earlier since her name was written when they uploaded the sneak peek of "The Family Madrigal" on Youtube:

By the way, John Leguizamo talked about his participation in the film in a new interview. They also showed a coulple of new shots featuring his character, Bruno. It surprised me that it was Lin-Manuel Miranda who called him to offer him the job and not one of the directors or producers.

Hmmm. All but maybe 3 plain "Encanto" logo t-shirts at Box Lunch are Youth sizes. Are they primarily marketing the film to kids? Raya had a bunch of adult-sized shirts (at different stores).D82 wrote:• Pins and more T-shirts: https://www.boxlunch.com/search?q=disney+encanto

I love the idea of using the doors as background for the character posters. By the way, they were designed by Lorelay Bové. I wonder if Bruno's will be closed off like that in the movie or if Mirabel's will have her name on it or if that's just for the posters. It's interesting too that Abuela Alma has her own magical door as well even though she doesn't have magical powers.
Some countries, like the UK, got different posters and only four of them:

Re: Encanto
The doors are interesting. The only other door like Bruno's where the eyes are fully open rather than being lines is Dolores. I suppose that could symbolize they both have knowledge of some kind--hers through hearing and his through seeing the future.
What I also wonder now that we see Bruno's door is not lit up is if that has something to do with Mirabel's lack of powers. We don't know exactly when he leaves / is thrown out of the family and his door loses its light, do we? Perhaps he left not long before Mirabel was born and because the family was broken, no new gift could be given? As in, all the doors there have to be lit up in order for further powers to be given or something like that? The original powers may be divide outwards to each member as they're born and when one is absent from the house, it's not possible for the powers to be at their full strength. I assume when a person dies, their door would disappear altogether.
I'm surprised they didn't have the creators didn't have Mirabel decorate her door herself over the years, perhaps have it look similar to her skirt which she made herself, I believe?

Re: Encanto
Disney updated their awards page for Encanto and are submitting "Dos Oruguitas" for Best Original Song.
Interesting that Best Original Score isn't one of the listed categories, despite the Academy marking "Moana", "Mary Poppins Returns" and "Frozen II" as eligible after not allowing Disney musicals to compete for years.

Re: Encanto
I imagined that was the song they were submitting. The fact that it's the only one from the film to get an end credits version and that it's been described as emotional seemed to suggest that. Lin-Manuel Miranda will have two very similar songs competing then, since "Inside Your Heart", the song from Vivo Netflix is submitting, is also a ballad about immigration. Both also include Spanish lyrics, though "Inside Your Heart" is mostly in English while "Dos Oruguitas" is completely in Spanish.
I'm surprised Best Original Score isn't among the listed categories too. Especially since they're submitting Raya's and Luca's scores. And how come Disney is submitting Free Guy for Best Picture and not any of their animated films? I know they have no chances of getting nominated, but neither does that film. I watched it recently on Disney+ and it was better than I expected, but it's not Oscar material. Also, why is Jungle Cruise totally absent from the awards website?
By the way, the cover for the next D23 issue has been revealed:

Source: https://twitter.com/DisneyD23/status/14 ... 5206290438
It's curious that the back features the first "60th Motion Picture" logo and not the most recent one. I wonder which one will be in front of the movie.

I love the door posters! I love that Camilo got his own door poster, but I wish they'd give him and his sister new clip art already, Im sick of seeing them with those same friggin poses in everything! I love Bruno's door too, very ominous.

Why do I like a magazine cover better than the official posters?

Yes, the premiere is today. I guess there'll be a livestream, as they usually do, but it seems the link is not available yet. According to this website it'll begin at 6:30 pm (Los Angeles time, I guess). Though, most likely it'll be available to watch later as well.Farerb wrote:There's going to be a premiere event soon:

It's quite catchy. And I love Mirabel's "acting" here. She looks so happy and excited for her cousin's big day.Farerb wrote:More from "The Family Madrigal":

I seems they didn't do a livestream for the premiere this time. Maybe because there weren't many stars in the cast? Though, I guess some interviews from it will be released later.

Here are a new TV spot, a Whirlpool commercial and some words by Lin-Manuel Miranda about the song "Dos Oruguitas":
Source: http://www.mrwillwong.com/interview-encanto/One of the centerpiece songs of ENCANTO is “Dos Oruguitas” (Two Caterpillars). The song happens to be the first song ever written entirely in Spanish by Miranda.
Miranda: “I think that being there from the beginning really allowed for more of a give and take than I’ve ever experienced on an Animated Film. There were songs where I put points on the board and said ‘Here’s our opening number!’, ‘Here’s how everyone’s related and what they can do!’, and I wrote that opening number before we had a Second or a Third Act to our Film, because we needed it for ourselves to keep track of everyone. Their names my change and their powers may change, but we know the audience is gonna need a guide and Mirabel is going to be our guide.”.
“Dos Oruguitas was inspired by some of the visuals coming-out of the Animation Department. And I loved the way they embodied the Miracle by having a flame from a candle turn into a butterfly, turn into a cascade of butterflies. Approaching this moment without spoilers, it’s a moment where we reveal a really personal part of the Madrigal family history and it didn’t feel right to have a character sing in real time, which is what all the other characters are doing over the course of the Movie. I thought we needed a Folk song, a song that feels like it’s always existed. Riffing-off the butterfly imagery I thought, butterflies have to go through a miracle to even become butterflies, and so I wrote this song about two caterpillars who are in love and are scared of letting each other go, but have to let each other go to become their next selves. It was a nature metaphor that already was baked-into the visuals of the Film, but speak so specifically to what this family is going through to see each other more fully in terms of you have to change to see each other get to the next level, and you have to allow yourselves to change.”.
“It isn’t harder to rhyme in Spanish, I just have a more limited vocab in Spanish, so I really had to reach for my Thesaurus and go outside my comfort zone to really try to write a song that feels like it’s always existed and I hope we accomplished this.”.
Re: Encanto
First reactions from the premiere:
Source: https://twitter.com/The_Illuminerdi/sta ... 5040514054Encanto is pure #Disney magic! The voice acting is amazing across the board with Stephanie Beatriz bringing hilarity and heart to her performance. The animation is gorgeous, the story is brilliant, and the music is absolutely phenomenal!
Source: https://twitter.com/JohnSpartan300/stat ... 6906971136Encanto's visuals are breathtaking. It's always a fun time with Lin-Manuel Miranda behind the songs, but it isn't as catchy as his previous works. As for the film's story? It's lacking that dramatic punch. There was someone in my theater sobbing loudly, so there's that.
Source: https://twitter.com/marahe/status/1456101397355802626Encanto is a fun and charming entry into the @DisneyAnimation canon. @Lin_Manuel's songs are amazing, and, I mean... A main character with glasses! And short, curly hair! A win for all of us.
Source: https://twitter.com/Lulamaybelle/status ... 9932610574Encanto is a joyful, jubilant ode to family with the perfect blend of heart & humor. Enchanting, hugely entertaining, awe-inducing & dazzling. A must-see magical marvel. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s songs will make you tap your feet & make tears fall.
Source: https://twitter.com/JennaBusch/status/1 ... 0224200706Disney’s Encanto is just lovely. It’s full of so much energy and fun. I’m not always a musical fan, but Luisa’s song has been in my head since the screening. It’s the perfect family film. Also, cute animated rats are always a happy thing for me.
Source: https://twitter.com/aaronfraggle/status ... 2031918149Encanto is super cute! Stephanie Beatriz, Diane Guerrero and Jessica Darrow shine. I loved the music, the songs are so fun and lively. It’s got a beautiful message about self worth, and it was refreshing to see some Afro-Latinx characters not just in the background, but as part of the main cast, hopefully paving the way for better representation going forward.
Source: https://twitter.com/IamMichaelJLee/stat ... 6219282435Encanto enchants w/ its beautiful Colombian cultural specificities, colorful visuals, and emotionally resonating themes of family. 60 films in, Disney still finds ways to captivate its audience with their animated musicals. This one is a real tearjerker but also such a joy!
Source: https://twitter.com/myrcellasear/status ... 0065255429Encanto may be one of the best films I’ve seen all year. I was genuinely touched throughout, and couldn’t stop myself from dancing in my seat. From pitch perfect performances to gorgeous animation to storylines that really hit home, this movie is set to be a classic!
Source: https://twitter.com/ThatHashtagShow/sta ... 3176344585Disney's #Encanto is vivid and imaginative. You'll fall in love with the Madrigal family immediately!
Source: https://twitter.com/TheAltSource/status ... 0918010880Encanto had me crying, laughing, and enjoying myself from start to finish. It's a beautiful film with an amazing cast of characters that you can't help but love! Also, you thought you liked Luisa now? Wait til you see her truly blossom! You'll love her!
Source: https://twitter.com/djkevlar/status/1456103051484295168Encanto is a really good movie with really great music. Not gonna be surprised if it’s the one that gets Lin-Manuel Miranda that EGOT.
Source: https://twitter.com/MTFIII/status/1456103938592329733Encanto was heartwarming and sweet, filled with songs to jam to, and a story that felt authentic and universal. I really dug it.
Source: https://twitter.com/SquadLeaderAce/stat ... 5993217028Encanto is stunning! A colorful display of the visual and cultural wonder of Colombia. The film is filled with life, vibrant colors, lively music and memorable, charismatic characters. It warms my soul to see a Disney film celebrating Colombia. Que se escuche mi gente!
Source: https://twitter.com/ScottDMenzel/status ... 7449111553Encanto is a visual and musical feast for the eyes & ears. A joyous animated celebration of Colombian culture & family. Lin-Manuel’s music continues to impress and is very likely be recognized for Best Original Song. Loved all the characters especially Mirabel and Bruno.
Lastly, kudos to Byron Howard Jared Bush & Charise Castro Smith for telling a story that not embraces and celebrates culture, but does so in a way that is relatable to everyone including children of all ages. This film conveys the kind of Disney magic that I want to see more of.
Source: https://twitter.com/ByClaytonDavis/stat ... 8458213379Encanto is magnificent! Afro-Latinos present, our culture alive, a story of ours told. Relates to anyone fighting to live up to expectations. Wept like a baby. The 60th Disney feature is one of their best. Loved it to bits.
"Family weirdos get the worst rap." Line of my life.
Source: https://twitter.com/Journeys_Film/statu ... 5259203585Encanto deals with some complex issues regarding family expectations. Definitely have to simmer on it (similar to how I felt after INSIDE OUT). Songs are good. Visuals are on par with the beauty of RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON.
Source: https://twitter.com/ScottMendelson/stat ... 2450455552The songs are redundant and gratuitous, but otherwise Disney's #Encanto is very good. A visual marvel that diversifies in terms of representation *and* storytelling. A surprisingly compelling supernatural mystery with a grounded emotional impact that pays off in spades.
