Isn't "I See the Light" the it-song? The scene most people seem to talk about is the lantern scene and I think it has a strong chance of winning the Oscar this year.Hardcore Mango wrote: Hmmm...it's kinda curious. I wonder if they'll be saying sometime in the future that "X's songs are good, but nothing like Tangled's".But (and maybe this is just me?) Aladdin, Mermaid, and Beauty each had an obvious "it" song. For Aladdin, it was "A Whole New World", for Mermaid, it was "Under the Sea", for Beauty, it was "Beauty and the Beast". I don't think Rapunzel's got an "it" song...
And maybe that's affecting people's view on the music? No one song really resonated with them? I rather feel that way.

I don't know...I'm pretty sure a good portion of the reviews I read called the song "dull", or "bland", and just applauded the visuals at that point, not the song. In fact, I don't think I've seen many reviews compliment the song. They just say that the latern scene is really beautiful for its spectacular visuals. But it might just be me.Isn't "I See the Light" the it-song? The scene most people seem to talk about is the lantern scene and I think it has a strong chance of winning the Oscar this year.

I don't usually like Christmas specials, but that actually sounds completely adorable! I'd love to see Rapunzel touch snow for the first time. Though, I think it'd be best to have it after the haircut. Full-length sounds a bit much for this sort of thing, however; I think it could have been lovely as a little short on the DVD.You know what i thought about today when i went to get a christmas tree?
They should make a Tangled christmas special, like the Beauty and the Beast one.
It would be so fun to see Rapunzel experience the snow for the first time.
But i do think they should have it take place before the haircut![]()
I think it would be cool to see how the long hair adapts to the snow.

I disagree. Everyone will say Disney is copying Dreamworks simply because Dreamworks releases 1 or 2 new holiday specials per year (3 Shrek, 1 Madagascar, 1 Kung Fo Panda, 1 Monsters vs Aliens- I can't recall anymore...) Whatever. Dreamworks loves sequels and TV specials, and most Disney DVD sequels are bad (besides the 2 Lion King ones and Cinderella 3 IMHO.)Fairytales wrote:You know what i thought about today when i went to get a christmas tree?

Still, very cute idea.

I haven't read any reviews (since I didn't want them to spoil anything for me), so I don't know if that's true, but I agree with that sentiment. I was impressed by the visuals, but the song itself felt very bland to me, especially the lyrics.Hardcore Mango wrote:I don't know...I'm pretty sure a good portion of the reviews I read called the song "dull", or "bland", and just applauded the visuals at that point, not the song.
I don't think that's really a matter of nostalgia. Remember that 'A Whole New World', 'Beauty and the Beast' and 'Colors of the wind' became instant radio hits as soon as the films were released. Those songs really *said* something, expressed a particular message. 'I See the Light' was a rather bland expression of feelings of Rapunzel and Flynn we already knew about.Hardcore Mango wrote:[...] But unlike other "it" songs, I don't see little kids going around and singing that like they do "I'll Make a Man Out of You", or "A Whole New World", or "Colours of the Wind". It's nice, but it doesn't really have that..."it" song feeling to it, I guess? But maybe it's just my nostalgia kicking in...

Except that "I See the Light" was never released as a radio friendly pop version. I'm sure if it was released as a Justin Bieber/Miley Cyrus duet it would be a hit. I do agree the lyrics are horribly bland though, and I'm usually pretty lenient on lyrics. I only notice them if they are terrible (most trance music) or brilliant (Sondheim).I don't think that's really a matter of nostalgia. Finally saw it in 3D last night. I liked it, but a couple gripes:
1. A few minor "current" references - if they want to go truly "timeless" classic, they would've refrained from putting these in. Take Oliver and Company for example (ok, a bit extreme for an example), good movie, but stuck in the 80s.
2. Rapunzel's design; her eyes. I found her eyes a bit too big and they made her look almost like an:

Overall the movie was good. I just hope Disney doesn't fuilly go this route for animation style. It would be nice if they could mix things up a bit, maybe alternate between the new style and traditional 2D animation. At least Winnie the Pooh is going to be in traditional 2D next year which I am looking forward to.

I think Rapunzel would have touched snow on her window sill. Although I guess she wouldn't have run around in it.

There weren't too many, and Disney didn't over-do it like Dreamworks or even Pixar. Take any animated film that came out recently that was set sometime in the past. Pretty much all of them (and I'm looking directly at you How to Train Your Dragon)suffer from this. Even some classic Disney princess movies did this (GENIE! In Aladdin, how the heck does he know all of those modern-in-the 90s pop culture references? And Aladdin is still a treasured classic.)Barbossa wrote:1. Doesn't the whole pop-culture reference thing go all the way back to 1941?

A lot of the Looney Tunes and Tex Avery shorts that so many classic cartoon fans hold near and dear to them had plenty of pop culture references, even in the context of a "timeless" fairy tale. (Swing Shift Cinderella, Coal Black and De Sebben Dwarves, Red Hot Riding Hood, etc.)
Plus, if I'm not mistaken, didn't Pinocchio have a couple "modern" references too? Pleasure Island alludes to a certain Robert Louis Stevenson novel, and the name "Lampwick" was a modern variation of the character's original name, "Candlewick".

I don't think that's a good comparison. The songs I mentioned above were released by respectable artists, not Disney's bubble-gum tween stars. And I think those songs mean so much to people because they're very strong both musically and lyrically. 'I See The Light' was neither --imo.dollover wrote:Except that "I See the Light" was never released as a radio friendly pop version. Look how far the Disney Princess marketing has gone in corrupting our minds: people now think Aladdin was a "princess movie"!Tangled wrote:Even some classic Disney princess movies did this (GENIE! no....Aladdin wasn't a Princess movie per say....this came out when people didn't worry or obess about the Disney Princess Line as much as they do today....Like Goliath said....this Disney Princess Marketing is getting out of hand.
