Disney's Divinity wrote:I don't think he was talking about villains singing in general, just about how they sing about how "evil" they are. Most people think that takes away from a villain, that they do evil just to be evil (not very realistic at all). I haven't listed to TP&TF's villain song, so I can't comment. Just that I don't think "Poor Unfortunate Souls," "Hellfire" or "Trust In Me" fall under that category. "Gaston" and Madame Mim's song seem more like something he would criticize, though I think both had their purposes.
How many Disney-villains songs actually do fall under that category (sing about how "evil" they are)? I think you can count them on one finger, if any? What about Scar, Governor Ratcliff and Jafar? They sing about what they want, and I think that is not without purpose. They want power, they want riches. That's why they do evil and that's pretty close to realism.

Well, I wasn't trying to validate his opinion because I agree that it's overly critical (and seems more anti-Disney or anti-modern than sensical, sometimes). Sometimes I tend to confuse Disney and general animation, because it's true that Disney rarely has those moments, but most other animated films have villains that sing about how evil they are. So I agree that I hate villains who are presented as evil incarnate or laugh about how evil they are, just that it doesn't actually happen very often with Disney.

I thought the limited release was in late November. BTW, the gator's name is Louis.

Very good Video OldFishTale!!!!

I have been worried that this movie will be all like slapstick comedy and will not have a heart in it. But I am happy to see Disney is putting elements from the classic princess tales into it.

I wouldn't call Mr. Barrier an idiot; after all, he has written some very detailed books on animation. And let's face it: any guy who has done his utmost to promote Carl Barks's career in various ways such as writing critical essays of Barks's stories and who is even included in one of Barks's most iconic paintings (see the guy with the moustache on the left) can't be that bad, right?

I do agree that Barrier's critique is quite harsh, but he has his opinion. However, I hope he'll check the film out just so that he could get a clear view of the entire product and then decide whether to call it trash or not. Still, I welcome both positive and negative opinions as long as people explain it thoroughly (and if Barrier bothers to watch the film, I'm sure his criticism will be thorough and worth a read).

I have to say that the two full trailers I've seen look interesting. I was originally somewhat worried about the film, but it seems it'll be yet another worthy entry into Disney's animated canon. Considering how many animators had to do with a smaller budget (as well as "learning the trade again" so to speak), the animation looks quite good. :)

Newman's songs sound somewhat similar to his previous output (at least from the bits I've heard in various clips) but they seem to suit the story just fine and have talented people performing them, so I have high hopes that they'll provide an enjoyable musical experience. I just hope that the score will transcend Newman's mannerisms, though, because the film deserves nothing less.

well maybe idiot is a harhs term, but I think you're a poor historian if you judge a movie based on its trailer. History has shown us how misleading trailers can be, because these days they exist to sell the film.

He's judging the book by its cover. And the way he promotes his own face, rather than animation history, on the front page of his website just makes me dislike him in general.

His review of the film is going to be bad because he's already made up his mind. If he can explain what it was he didn't like, then fine. But he seems judgemental.

The biggest reason I am willing to trust Mr. Beck is because he also gave GREAT reviews to Kung Fu Panda, a film that at the time everyone thought was going to yet another Dreamworks movie but turned out to be something very, very special.

I have to say I absolutely love the new trailer.
As a big traditional animation fan I was a bit worried about this film at first, but what I just saw actually really touched me.

I'm glad there seems to be a wonderful balance between the sincere moments and the slapstick moments.
From what I've seen so far this film is really worthy to be added to the previous classics.

Also, some clips in this trailer really showed the animation is very fluid.
What a relief to see that wonderful fluidity again after all these years of 3d animation.
The Toy Story trailer that was played afterwards really made this even more noticeable.

I'm not too fond of Randy Newman's music, but I think this film can get away with it, because of the style. I just can't help but wonder what it would have been like with an even better composer.

But i can't wait for this release.

Nothing much new, but I was entertained by the article:

Disney hopes its 2-D 'Princess and the Frog' doesn't fall flat

This is actually going to be the first time that Newman's music will suit the location and style of the film. His scores really annoy me with how repetitive they are.

I live in NYC too. I'm definitely going. I'm just trying to decide when I should buy my ticket, or if I should buy the one for 30 or 50 dollars. I want the lithograph.

At least you have someone to go with, which is nice. I'm going alone. I doubt I'll find someone to accompany me. It's okay though, I go to the movies all the time alone, even the animated ones.

I'm going to the showing on night of the 28th in NY with three other friends, and the four of us are all 19 years old, so I am sure the crowd will be made up of all ages.
