Agree..... if there’s ANYTHING that should be considered sacred and untouchable in Walt Disney’s legacy it should be his first full length animated feature Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

I have seen this film literally dozens of times since I first saw it as a small child on its 30th Anniversary rerelease....and I STILL get teary eyed at the Dwarfs’ grief when they’re keeping vigil around Snow White’s body when she’s lying in state in the cottage.

The Silly Song dance will always be my absolute favorite piece of Disney animation among many animation highlights.

Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Rapunzel, Anna, Elsa, Merida
versus
Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Moana, Raya, Mirabel, Asha

Even if we eliminate Anna and Elsa--which I think is pushing it, while Disney still markets them separately because they make so much money by themselves, they're also marketed with the line--you'd still have 8 v. 7?
PatchofBlue wrote:The only POC princesses to be consistently promoted are Tiana and Jasmine--and maybe Moana. Which white princess gets left out of the conversation like this? Maybe Aurora? You know. The princess who has her own castle in like half of the Disney parks?
I guess you can blame that on the consumers? The ones who sell the most are featured the most often? Ariel, Cinderella, and Elsa are the biggest of course, but I think Aurora might actually be the next one or two after them that sells the most. At least I remember some years ago discussing some factoids here and being surprised she sells so well since she's more of a cypher than a character.

And no offense intended, but Tiana is not "sassy." Megara is what I think of as "sassy." Tiana is simply a character with a more mature vibe like Belle and Cinderella (Pocahontas is of the mature type, too, but I think of her as having a more playful side to her character than those three). As far as being self-made, I thought the whole point of the film was Tiana finally learning to rely on faith and wishing rather than simply her own work to get what she wants in the end, and realizing there are things she needed she could never have comprehended for herself.

It's sounded all along like they're imitating Mirror, Mirror a great deal, so I'm not surprised if this is another example. I'd much rather they imitated Snow White and the Huntsman than that film--at least as far as the Queen and the romance between SW and the Huntsman is concerned. Mirror, Mirror was more visually sumptuous--but, let's be honest, even if live-action Disney tried to re-create that, they'd only fail. Their costuming is just atrocious, off the charts terrible lately especially between these Dwarf outfits and on TLM. Even films from the recent past that are slightly better like B&tB, Aladdin, etc. are still never "great" in that regard. The only exceptions I can think of is that I loved Jasmine's orange and especially PINK outfits in that remake. I also really liked Beast's ballroom outfit, the Stepmother's emerald dress from the final scenes of Cinderella, and Richard Madden's outfit.

Jasmine is considered a character of color, not white. Also, Anna and Elsa who are not part of the DP franchise were retconned to be women of color in the sequel.

Divinity, we actually agree on some stuff! I loved Jasmine's orange corseted dress and her pink and orange (I think?) outfit when she waits for Aladdin to meet her again (when he can't come and she thinks she was stood up), the Beast's outfits (though my favorite is his celebration outfit as the Prince in the end) all the Stepmother's outfits, but yes, the last one is a particulay good one, and all Richard Madden's outfits, but you said one Richard Madden outfit, which one?

A scooper known as MyTimeToShineHello, who apparently mainly leaks Marvel stuff, says the "seven dwarfs" in this version are indeed the "Merry Men" to Andrew Burnap's Robin Hood-esque character and that the group is called "the Bandits."
The people that save Snow White in this version are called the Bandits. Jonathan, the male love interest who ISN'T a prince is also a Bandit. The Bandits are like Robin Hood, they steal from the Queen to feed the poor

And this is not new and was partly mentioned in the article about the set photos, but I don't think had been posted in full. The Daily Mail said last December that the "seven dwarfs" were going to be fully computer generated and would indeed be magical creatures, but would keep their original names.
A source closely connected with the film — shot earlier this year — tells me Snow White's seven 'dwarfs' are going to be fully computer generated, and won't be dwarfs at all.

Instead, Snow White is befriended by magical, forest-dwelling creatures.

A source connected with the production explains that they will be rather like the trolls in Frozen, or JRR Tolkein's hobbits. They will have two legs, two arms and a face with eyes, nose and a mouth . . . but not be actually human.

That sounds like a riddle and I can add that you may expect a lot of hair, or fur, when the CG wizards have done their work, with the intention being to make them 'iconic' and 'adorable'. The only nod back to the original little folk will be the names: Grumpy, Happy and so on.

A source said: 'We finished filming in the summer but it takes months to sort out the CG for the dwarfs, who aren't dwarfs. Also, it always takes ages for all the merchandise to be made, so the film's not out for a long time still.'

In the same article it was also mentioned that the magic mirror and the apple would still be in the film:
Actress Rachel Zegler, Maria in West Side Story last year, is playing the iconic Princess as a kick-ass modern heroine. She said: 'She's not going to be saved by a kiss and she's not dreaming of a Prince, because there isn't one. She is dreaming of becoming the leader her late father told her she could be, if she is fearless, honest and true.'

Her nemesis still remains her wicked stepmother (played by Gal Gadot), who still asks her magic mirror: 'Who is the fairest of them all?' And Gadot still does the business with the poisoned apple.

Sotiris wrote: Mon Jul 17, 2023 12:26 am It's true Disney initially said the dwarfs would be magical creatures instead of people, so either that idea got scrapped along the way or they are in fact magical creatures who can transform into people.
Oh, it didn't occur to me they could transform into people. Who knows, perhaps that's the case. I'd prefer if they were still magical creatures. That's at least closer to dwarfs than them being human.
Sotiris wrote: Mon Jul 17, 2023 12:26 am Perhaps they did that because they were planning to hide the "dwarfs" from the trailers and other publicity material knowing they would be controversial. This was their attempt to put the cat back in the bag.
Yes, they've been quite secretive about the "dwarfs." Probably, they didn't plan to reveal them until much later. But I think their attempt to put the cat back in the bag was quite dumb.
Sotiris wrote: Mon Jul 17, 2023 12:26 am It's surprising they haven't added her profile picture on the website yet, but she has definitely been inducted. At the bottom of the same website where it says "Discover (and Rediscover) Your Favorite Princess Films" her movie is featured. I'm sure it was just an oversight on Disney's part. On the Disney Store website, she was added a long time ago. I wish they would go back to having coronation ceremonies for new inductees. They stopped after Merida due to the controversy surrounding her inclusion into the franchise.
Oh, OK. Thanks for the info. Perhaps they just don't update that website often and that's why she hasn't been added. I don't know, it's the first time I visited it.

I think they're taking elements from both films. If I remember correctly, the prince was also a Robin Hood-esque type of character in Snow White and the Huntsman. Although, it makes sense to me if they borrow more from Mirror Mirror as that was a family film, while the other was more of a "young adult" movie in the style of Twilight, love triangle included.

But a dwarf is still human. There are dwarfs in real life, they are human. One of them in the pictures is a real dwarf, and he's human.

The Prince in Snow White and the Huntsman was just Snow White's prince friend, not a Robin Hood type, unless you meant the huntsman, who still wasn't like Robin Hood. The Prince, huntsman, and Snow White and the dwarfs themselves in that film I guess you could say were all a little like Robin Hood living in the woods for a while and trying to overthrow a wicked ruler.

Speaking of that, "The Seven Bandits" and "The Seven Teens" would've been better nods to the seven dwarfs, but in both cases they've added more characters to the group; here Snow White's love interest Jonathan and Asha in Wish, who I guess is also part of the group of friends, so in both cases they're more than seven.

Well, dwarfs are often played by people with dwarfism, but both things are actually not the same. Here are definitions for both meanings of dwarf from Wiktionary:
1. (mythology) Any member of a race of beings from (especially Scandinavian and other Germanic) folklore, usually depicted as having some sort of supernatural powers and being skilled in crafting and metalworking, often as short with long beards, and sometimes as clashing with elves.

2. (now often offensive) A person of short stature, often one whose limbs are disproportionately small in relation to the body as compared with typical adults, usually as the result of a genetic condition.

I guess you're right. I remembered the first time we see the Prince as an adult he and his men ambush some of the Queen's soldiers who are transporting some barrels or something, so I guess I assumed from that that they were robbing the Queen and returning the goods to the people like Robin Hood does. He also uses a bow as his weapon. However, looking for info on this I found this featurette where they say what actually happens in that scene is that the Prince finds out that the Queen's men are coming through his father's land and takes some of his father's soldiers with him to overthrow them. I guess they copied the Robin Hood stuff just from Mirror Mirror then. There the Prince is not a Robin Hood type of character, but the seven dwarfs and Snow White do steal from the Queen and return the money to the people of the kingdom.

Oh, all right so there are non-human dwarfs.

I didn't remember all of that from Snow White and the Huntsman and Mirror, Mirror, thank you.

Disney sees whiteness as a flaw to be fixed which is why they blackwash all the princesses that should be white: Ariel,Snow White, the princess from Wish who is explicitely from Iberia yet is somehow is black now, and who knows who else in the future. Though funny despite thinking that way they still steal cultures and tales created by white people to insult them. Patchofblue, D82, at least thanks for confirming this, that you believe the right thing to do is to erase, insult and replace all white pricesses while keeping the sacred non white characters untouchable, though it was clear all along.

Dylan Postl says it's "not right" for Disney to take roles away from actors of his stature by removing the dwarf characters from the new Snow White.

I do agree with him, there is a dearth of roles, and it is money for somebody who may have difficulty getting it other ways. I mean, I personally can understand Dinklage's point to a degree, but he overreacted, especially putting out in the press like that. You'd think he would've just thought it to himself and passed on the script quietly.

I mean, to me the Dwarfs aren't great roles, but they are arguably more defined than Snow White herself is in the Disney version. Almost all the characters in SW lack dimension to me, usually defined by one character trait, but it was the first film of the studio; I always thought of SW as a transition moment from shorts into full films, with better movies that followed because of the experience learned from making it. At least I always thought the '40s films were all better than this one, and Cinderella sort of re-did the same sort of structure and "perfected" it, at least to me (SW, Cinderella, and SB all having a similar structure).

Everything about removing the dwarfs is trash. Dwarfs worked on mines because they are not tall and they can work in smaller places. Removing them from the movie is absurd.
Also I don't find them offensive. They are very charsimatic and there are no jokes about their stature in the movie.
I'm very tired about this Disney. They are making non-sense changes and they don't realized that people don't want that.

Ouch, the movie is several months away, and already the backlash is strong.  I think Rachel Zegler will be the reason why this one will underperform at the box office. She's very unlikable. especially when talking about Snow White.

Rachel is rude and her behaviour with this movie is not good.
The little Mermaid didn't make great numbers because people were not Happy about Halle and she was really cute during the time when the movie was on production and during the premiers.
This movie is having changes that people don't like. They are not Happy with the actress too and to complete the pack she's acting rude. All this things can afrect the movie and I'm pretty sure that is going to be a flop and big part of the guilty is because of her. The studios are not going to hire her of this turns to be into a disaster and then she will cry like Mena's did after Aladdin

Halle was very sweet when she promoted her movie, and she seemed genuinely nice. I can say the same about Mena with Aladdin. His interviews were funny and also interesting. On the other hand, Rachel is just full of herself. Even her last tweet with all those cute pictures of herself as various Disney Princess was annoying.

She sees herself like a Diva. Honey, you have made 4 or 5 movies and 2 of them were not a success. You're not Meryl Streep, you are a Lucky girl Who sings beautfiul.
There are thousands of Girls like her. If she stills behaving like this I'm sure that she's going to be forgotten very soon.
