Watched the original Arthur starring Dudley Moore and LIza Minnelli with John Gielgud as the butler. This was such a heartwarming, fun movie that it is truly a shame (or sham) that Hollywood has chosen to remake this classic comedy. Russell Brand is not even close to being in the same class as Dudley Moore. (How did he ever get Katy Perry to marry him?)
I do have an answer to that question, but I don't think the Mods here will let it be in print.
Going to watch the sequel Arthur 2: On The Rocks with the same cast after the basketball games tonight.

The House Bunny (2008) - Anna Farris stars as a Playboy Bunny who gets kicked out of the mansion, so she winds up as House Mother for a sorority of misfits.
Mr. Accident (2000) - Yahoo Serious is a klutzy repairman for an Egg Factory, who meets a goofy girl searching for extraterrestrial life.
Disaster Movie (2008)
- Also, I thought there was a "steaming pile of ***" emoticon, did it get removed??
Coming up next:
Escape to Witch Mountain (1975) - Two kids with telekinetic powers are on the run from a town who thinks they are witches.

Meng ying tong nian (2004)
Also known as Electric shadows. Beautiful, engaging and very touching drama, set in communist China during Mao's time. Trhough large flash-backs, it tells the story of a little boy and girl who become friends because they both like movies so much. But when they get seperated and the girl has to deal with a new baby brother, her life changes not for the better. year later, they are reunited, under unhappy circumstances. I hated it to see the end credits roll. I just didn't want this special tale to end.
Sabah (2005)
Canadian drama about a Syrian 40 year old woman still living with her mother and being controlled by her brother, who meets a Canadian guy and falls in love with him --with all the predictable obstacles and problems that go with this kind of movie. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed it, though I've seen these issues adressed a lot better in other movies.

Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
Great. exciting and thrilling movie, though not quite what I had expected. I thought I was going to see a pure fantasy-film, but actually very little time was spend on the magical world of 'Pan'. Most of the time was reserved for the equally interesting tale of the struggle of the rebels against the fascists. Still, I had wanted to see more of the fantasy world. The movie has many very disturbing scenes, set both in the fantasy world and the world, which include torture, mutilation, executions and even the death of a little girl. A feel good movie it's not, althought it has, in some way, a happy end, altough not in the traditional sense of the word, and by that time, we've seen a lot of misery already.
I had to seriously LOL at the comments of the haters on IMDb, who all (one after the other) claimed the graphic violence was only there to draw in more viewers and how it was totally unneccesary and only served to cater to the blood-thirsty audiences... (like this was a Pulp Fiction kind of movie.) Well, what they're taking offense to is a depiction of real-life fascism. This is what happened under Franco in Spain... and Pinochet in Chile, Videla in Argentina and so many other fascist regimes, who, by the way, were financed and supported by the same politicians these commentators on IMDb have likely voted for. Basically, their argument was: "we don't like to see reality; we just want pretty fairytales; we want something uplifting and positive". Which I think is the lamest argument ever. These people need to grow up and deal with the real world.

Lakeview Terrace (2008)
Thriller about a mixed-race couple (white dude with black chick) who move next door to Samuel L. Jackson, who is a psychopath cop who doesn't think they should be together and terrorises them. It's a decent movie, but far from original and it has all the cliches you've ever seen in similar stories. It's saved because Jackson is such a good actor and Kerry Washington is soooooo smoking hot.

From Hell
Stars Johnny Depp as an inspector investigating the Jack the Ripper murders. I adored it. I thought it was very well done, and Johnny Depp was amazing, as always. As for the actual murder scenes, I thought they got the point across without going overboard with the gore. I'm not one to freak out over gore in movies, but I thought the way they handled it was refreshing in a world of Saws. Before watching this, I knew next to nothing about Jack the Ripper, and I enjoyed it so much I really want to read up on him now.

The exorcism of Emily Rose
Combination of court drama and thriller. Emily Rose dies when a priest is performing an exorcism on her. The priest stands trial as he is accused of gross negligence leading to the girl's death. Was Emily a epileptic pshychotic who needed medical treatment or was she really posessed by demons?
Tom Wilkinson is good in the role as priest. Emily Rose is played by the same actress who plays Dexter's sister in the tv-series of the same name. It's a pity that the character of Emily remains so hazy: you don't learn much about her character outside her being posessed/psychotic. And yes, she was very pious, we hear.
Inspired by a true story.

Reckless Kelly (1993) - Another Yahoo Serious film, about an Australian bank robber who gives all the money to the poor.
The Slammin' Salmon (2009) - A film from Broken Lizard (Super Troopers), about the wait-staff at a restaurant owned by a boxing champ, due to a bet he made with a Yakuza boss, the staff needs to make $20,000 in one night. There's a prize for the top-selling person, while the loser will be beaten by the champ!
Vampires Suck (2010) - A Twilight spoof from the ___ Movie morons. Slightly better than Disaster Movie, but then stepping in a pile of dog doo would be slightly better than watching Disaster Movie again.
Young Einstein (1988) - The final Yahoo Serious film (that I watched, he only made the three, but I watched them out of order.) This has Albert Einstein as a Tasmanian farmer who discovers a way to split the beer atom, thus adding the elusive bubbles to beer! Along the way, he dates Marie Curie and invents "Roll & Rock" music.
Igor (2008) - A dark and twisted tale of an "Igor" (a class of hunchbacked assistants to evil scientists), who wants to be an evil scientist himself, and creates a giant woman. Horror fans and people who like The Nightmare Before Christmas, A Corpse Bride, etc., might enjoy this one, although parents might want to watch it before letting their kids watch.
Extreme Movie (2008) - NOT from the ____ Movie team of Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, so it gets a couple of bonus points right there. Not really all that extreme, this deals with the sexuality of a bunch of high-schoolers in a comical way, it plays more like a series of vignettes (like Kentucky Fried Movie), instead of one cohesive story.
Combat Academy (1986) - Two pranksters get sentenced to go to a military academy, kind of a Police Academy for high school kids. There are a few TV stars here and there in this made for TV movie.
Baby Geniuses (1999) - If you accept the premise (babies before 2 years old have "universal knowledge", and are able to converse with each other and have very high IQs), then you might enjoy this family movie. Chock full of stars (Kathleen Turner, Christopher Lloyd, MacNichol, Dom DeLuise, etc.), this is cheesy, but somewhat fun. I do feel Christopher Lloyd was really underused in this, more due to the writing/directing than his acting. This film is from the same director as A Christmas Story, and many people will think it's dreck.
Over the Hedge (2006) - I read the book of cartoon strips recently, so I wanted to revisit the movie. A group of woodland creatures discover that their forest was turned into the suburbs, so they adapt to scrounging human food instead.
Epic Movie (2007) - To say I "liked" this movie from the film-wrecking team of Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer would be a criminal mis-use of the word "like", however it IS better than their other stuff. Unlike Disaster Movie, this has a complete narrative (mostly stolen from The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.) Disaster Movie just throws tons of scenes in from various current movies (or their trailers) and changes some little element of the scene to "spoof" it. I like the movies Epic Movie spoofed, and I liked seeing Jayma Mays in the role of Lucy.
Speaking of Disaster Movie, while it IS a complete pile of dog doo, and in the bottom 5 worst movies I've ever seen, the Princess character (from Enchanted) actually had some almost funny moments, such as when she was startled by her big poofy sleeves.
Garfield: the Movie (2004) - A live-action/CGI version of the comic strip fat cat who eats lasagna. After having his life disrupted by a new dog, Garfield feels guilty for letting Odie run away and get kidnapped, so he goes on a quest to find Odie before it's too late. Jennifer Love Hewitt is pretty hot as Liz (the vet)!
Coming up next:
Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigalo (1999) - Rob Schneider plays a guy who pretends to be a gigolo, while housesitting for a real gigolo.

The Limey
I can't remember if I posted about this or not, but I watched The Limey on Monday for Film Noir. It was interesting to say the least; it was definitely better than Lone Star, though. It was cool to see what was flashback, what was fantasy and what actually happened to Jenny, but I wasn't all too thrilled with it. It's kinda in the middle of the road in the films noir that I like. The Limey was just okay for me.
Memento is up next. My professor said to watch it at least twice to fully understand it. Hopefully I'll find time to watch it before Monday night. Mulholland Drive was supposed to be after Memento, but my professor won't be here the week after next, so he just skipped to No Country for Old Men to finish out the course.

That Thing You Do! - (1996) - Written and Directed by Tom Hanks, who also stars in the film as Mr. White. The story of an American band from Erie, Pennsylvania in the period just after the influence of the Beatles on American music. Also starring Johnathon Schaech, Tom Everett Scott, Steve Zahn, Charlize Theron, and the ever beautiful Liv Tyler. This movie follows the group from their upstart beginning through the State Fair tour and to the grand stage in Hollywood. This is probably one of the finest musical films of the current day. Written with a style that stands up over time and has a great moral message, along with a very good love story. The title song "That Thing You Do" will run in your head for weeks after seeing this movie, and if you are lucky enough to own the Special Edition you will get almost 40 extra minutes of fun from The Wonders and that thing they do. Highly recommended.

I totally would, but I don't think Netflix is streaming it at the moment. I'll probably borrow it from the library once I'm on summer break. Though, I was kind of horrified by Blue Velvet, so I'm a little apprehensive of watching another David Lynch film.Goliath wrote:For shame! Really, for shame! Oh boy, I haven’t had any free time to watch any movies for a while now but my library had two new Blus for me and I could either watch them or loose them. I’m definitely glad I made time to fit these two in:
Black Swan (2010) 7.5/10 - Even with all the hype, I wasn’t expecting much, as I honestly didn’t care for Requiem for a Dream or The Wrestler as much as others. They were both kind of average to me, nothing special, so I was delighted by how much I enjoyed this one (especially since Black Swan and The Wrestler pretty much have the exact same endings). It’s the story of a schizophrenic young adult girl, who is babied by her overprotective mother, and then experiences a mental breakdown while trying to deal with the pressure of having the lead role in the ballet and with sexual maturity. We can later deduce that her mother is using her to relive her ambitions as a dancer by forcing her to go to dance classes as a young child and then sheltering her in that world to the point that it’s all she knows, causing her to miss out on the basic social interaction and maturity a teenage girl would’ve experienced. Anyways, it’s a thrilling movie. The acting is good, the girl-on-girl action is hot, and the use of Tchaikovsky’s score is masterful (honestly Disney, if you wanted to use it in a future Fantasia, you missed your chance as no one will be able to hear this music and not associate it with Nina’s breakdown). Nina peeling the skin on her finger made me flinch and the scene where she physically becomes a swan (her legs bend back in her bedroom) made me sad that such a lame CGI scene was included. Other then that, it was great. I wanted to watch it a second time, which is rare for me (the Social Network was the only other film from 2010 that I actually liked enough to watch a second time), but I just didn’t have the time.
Now as for the people making comparisons to Perfect Blue, they’re not that similar. Sure, they’re both sexually charged psychological thrillers that feature female protagonists having mental breakdowns but that’s it.
The Fighter (2010) 7/10 - It was a good movie but not as good as people had me believing it was. It still feels pretty formulaic, that or I've just seen too many boxing movies. I guess when people have been starved of a certain genre for too long they tend to get overly excited about the first decent movie in that genre to come out (like the 3:10 to Yuma remake, which was good but way too overhyped just for being a western). Anyways, the acting was pretty good, character development was adequate and the movie ends just as you'd think it would. I was hoping for a little more suspense during the boxing matches as to whether he would win or not and I was hoping to empathize with the protagonist a little more then I did but still. If you like boxing movies, you'll enjoy it. Just don't go in expecting a game changer.

Gone with the Wind
I've finally finished watching this, and it's no wonder it won so many awards. It is truly epic. The only thing that I really didn't like was how Scarlett was such a cry baby. I mean, she totally grew up and did her own thing, but then she grew back down again; that's probably the character (I've never read the novel), but I just don't really like that part. Vivian Leigh was wonderful, though. As were all of the other characters. It's a great film, and I'd like to own it on Blu-ray one of these days.
I've also watched these over the last few days:
Black Swan
Annie (1982)
Anastasia
Victor/Victoria (the filmed Broadway production, not the film)
The Swan Princess
Annie (1999)
Swan Lake (not a film, but a recording of the ballet)

Soul Surfer (2011) - Based on the true story of Bethany Hamilton, a young surfer who survived a shark attack that took her arm. I thought it was pretty well done, and it showed her Christian faith without shoving it in your face.
Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo (2005) - Yes, another comedy about the man-whore. This time, there is a killer going after the European gigolos, and Deuce is the only one who can stop the killer.
Balls of Fury (2007) - Imagine the script for a Kung Fu movie with an underground tournament to the death, and replace all instances of Kung Fu with Ping Pong!
Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2 (2004) - Wow! Just... wow... While I liked the first one in a cheesy way, this made me want to tear my hair out!
Not Another Teen Movie (2001) - A MUCH better spoof movie than anything put out by Friedberg/Seltzer, although not in the class of Airplane! or Mel Brooks films.
Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties (2006) - A retelling of The Prince and the Pauper, with the pampered fat cat times two!
Clockstoppers (2002) - A Nickolodeon movie, this tells of a teenager who gets his hands on a watch that can speed him up so that time seems to stand still. Rogue government agents want to get the watch from him.
Bewitched (2005) - Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman star in this remake/spoof of the Bewitched TV show, Will's character is an actor who lands the role of the new Darrin, but he gets more than he bargains for when the the unknown actress he picks for Samantha turns out to be a real witch.

Agreed- I actually laughed at this. (To be fair, I laughed at the Fried-Selt movies too, but only once or twice total.)littlefuzzy wrote:Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo (2005) - Yes, another comedy about the man-whore. I didn't laugh at the original Deuce Bigalow, but I did enjoy it. Haven't seen it in years, though.
