We had a few movie field trips as rewards in elementary / middle school, and I'm pretty sure for some reason a few classes in high school went to the movie the day before winter break.

"going down the Bayou" is possibly THE most pointless song in Disney history. And the Hillbillies arent terrible, but a film that has as much plot as this one, every minute should be vital. And those two scenes arent.

And as charming as Ray is, and his whole Evangeline-storyline, he doesnt seem too vital to the story, Especially if we consider he only shows up after about 45 minutes!

WOW I conpletely disagree with this. Going Down the Bayou....was a GREAT SONG. It incorporated a style of music appropriate for the film (Cajun) giving us a break from the Jazz. Its one of the few songs that I actually had STUCK in my head when I left the theater. haha Everyone in the theater loved it. People were laughing at all the fireflys and the little kid a few seats down was dancing quietly in place. I thought the animation was beautiful and ...all in all was one of the most memorable and enjoyable segments of the movie for me. Unreal you thought it pointless and especally thinking Ray wasnt Vital. I found Ray to be a lovable character and he brought a lot to the film.

I like "Goin' Down the Bayou" too. It was fun to listen to alone but it was great when it played with the bouncing fireflies. I only wished that it was longer.

I agree that there's been plenty of slapstick in the past Disney films as well. It really doesn't take much to make kids laugh. I often don't object to slapstick unless it tries to do kiddy damage control, like the Gargoyles' song after Frollo's rampage in HoND. That movie was the only instance where sidekicks went a little too far. But since we're talking about shallow enemies here, you could say the alligators that try to eat Tiana and Naveen (one of which was voiced by Emerill Lagasse so I discovered) were not vital to the plot either unless you count Tiana getting more upset with Naveen.

So the slapstick characters may be shallow, but they were meant to be the kids' entertainment, although there were adults laughing during the scene. If slapstick is so unpopular, everyone must hate Looney Tunes! Those cartoons are nothing BUT slapstick!

We saw The Amazon, some educational IMAX film, in 6th grade, and in 10th grade we saw Pearl Harbor.

I like "Goin' Down the Bayou" too. It was fun to listen to alone but it was great when it played with the bouncing fireflies. I only wished that it was longer.

I didn't dislike the song before I saw the film- I did like it, but it wasn't my favorite. It's still not necessarily my favorite, but in context, it was even better, IMO.

Princess and the Frog slips to number 2. Not looking like a great Renessance comeback after all. How sad .......this film deserved better.

If you look up Aladdin's box-office, it also dropped about 50% on its second weekend in wide release. But, it really started to pick up at Christmas. Despite Alvin and the Chipmunks opening next weekend, I think the parents who were forced to sit through the first one won't be willing to endure those high-pitched rodents again and will probably pay to see the Disney animated musical instead. Remember, it's them who have to pay for the tickets!

Well they did take their tykes to Transformers 2...

Besides that this film has only managed to gross about $45 million in its first 10 days of release and since that's when the biggest opportunity for the studios to make money off their films happens I'm sure the bean counters are disappointed. However the merch sales may make up for it.

Edit: Realized that total includes the NY/LA opening too, which makes it look worse.

Also, Aladdin fared better with critics upon its release too. Unlike Frog which is getting good, but not rave reviews.

No, cause Avatar had been a highly anticipated movie for a long time. It's also much better movie imo. Hopefully James Cameron use the technology he use in Avatar to make his most eager project: Battle Angel Alita.

Yeah, Avatar has been receiving a lot of critical praise from both fans and the media. It truly seems to be a strong performer that delivers on all aspects.

As for Alvin and the Chipmunks, yeah, you guys are definitely underestimating it. As bad as the first movie was, it WAS a big hit and woke up interest in the franchise in both kids and adults. With the second movie focusing on the Chippettes (which are just as popular as the Chipmunks themselves) hype for it will be big.

It all depends if Disney has realistic expectations for this movie. Last time they were pleased with the film's opening, and the movie was number 2 despite the Avatar hype, so it stood there. It could be a strong performer long after the holidays are over and make over a 100 million before it is released on DVD and Blu-Ray on the spring off 2010.

Of course, fans and the media will make a bigger deal over its apparent failure.

I'm not sure you know American stereotypes, but black people were stereotyped and ridiculed using those foods as part of the black persons' stereotype because some of them happened to like them (I hope I'm making sense). Although there's nothing wrong with eating those foods, if done in a tasteless way, could be a sign of racism.

I'll hopefully watch Princess and the Frog again sometime this coming week. I did notice for a spilt second that in the scene where Tiana takes a ride on the trolley that a person was reading a newspaper saying "Wilson elected" which referred to the election of President Woodrow Wilson the day before on election day.
