Re: Mary Poppins Returns
If they did it before, Mary likes to let people try themselves, and their was no risk of them dying, alright...but it looked like their was still a risk of them dying.

Re: Mary Poppins Returns
It looks like MARY POPPINS RETURNS is doing pretty well all things considered. It's going to make back its budget this weekend.
Domestic total stands at $128 million domestically thus far with another $85 million worldwide. Its total stands at $213 million worldwide. I think this was a worthwhile investment and it pleases me to see that there are people responding enthusiastically to the animated sequence. Ken Duncan Studio is truly talented at what they do. Although I find it absolutely awful that Disney didn't give them enough credit, it does nothing to discredit what they did for the movie, and if I were to see it again, it would be for that scene alone.

Re: Mary Poppins Returns
Looks like it didn't get any Golden Globe Awards. But hopefully it'll get Oscar recognition.
Re: Mary Poppins Returns
Well, the Oscars have more categories, so maybe it can win best costume design or best art direction, for example, but I doubt it will win any of the big awards there either.

Re: Mary Poppins Returns
Total now stands at $140 million domestically and $259 million worldwide. It's made its $130 million budget back. So far from what I see it's legs are vaguely similar to that of The Greatest Showman.
Re: Mary Poppins Returns
I absolutely CANNOT FATHOM why BAFTA have totally ignored her for even a nomination ??? Absolutely shocking, and extremely disappointing.
I thought Emily had a shot with the Globes what with Gaga in the Dramatic slot, but guessed wrongly. Such a shame she will be overlooked for this, must be so disappointing for all involved.

Re: Mary Poppins Returns
Have you watched all of the films in the leading actress category? If so, who do you believe didn't deserve the nomination or not as much as Emily? Let's not forget these films are in competition with each other and there are only 5 slots available. Someone is bound to be left out.Atlantica wrote:I absolutely CANNOT FATHOM why BAFTA have totally ignored her for even a nomination?
The film did receive 3 BAFTA nominations: original music, costume design, and production design. That's already a pretty big deal. The BAFTAs don't have special categories for comedies/musicals like the Globes do. It stands to reason that a performance, no matter how competent, in a feel-good family film, and a sequel no less, wouldn't be picked over more demanding roles in dramas.

Re: Mary Poppins Returns
There's been a lot of discussion on whether Julie Andrews has been on good terms with Disney lately or not and I thought it was interesting that Practically Poppins in Every Way, the recent book on the making of Mary Poppins, doesn't feature a single image or mention of Julie Andrews at all. You can read about it more in the customer reviews for the book on the Amazon page.

Re: Mary Poppins Returns
I'm too shocked Emily wasn't nominated or for Best Picture. Mary Poppins Returns is an essentially love letter to London. I mean, Paddington 2 got nominated for Best Picture and Best Picture last year.
I feel bad for Emily too. If Emily won Best Actress, this would be a second time the character of MP got awarded for her portrayal. Not only is the year competitive, but no one can measure to Julie Andrews's performance.

That is really weird. Is this Disney's way of punishing Julie for not agreeing to appear in the sequel? Julie doesn't have the legal power to prevent Disney from mentioning her in a book or using photos of hers as Mary Poppins even if she wanted to.JeanGreyForever wrote:There's been a lot of discussion on whether Julie Andrews has been on good terms with Disney lately or not and I thought it was interesting that Practically Poppins in Every Way, the recent book on the making of Mary Poppins, doesn't feature a single image or mention of Julie Andrews at all. Re: Mary Poppins Returns
This is what I'm wondering. It reminds me too much of when Disney and Robin Williams were feuding and in the Making of Aladdin book, Robin Williams was constantly referred to as "the actor who voices the Genie" or something like that. It's possible that Disney did this to let Julie Andrews know that they don't need her to carry on the Mary Poppins legacy.Sotiris wrote: That is really weird. Well Andrews' turn was absolutely iconic. No matter how good Blunt did, and she did very well IMO, it was always going to be tough to top.disneyprincess11 wrote:I'm too shocked Emily wasn't nominated or for Best Picture. But the legs that I see this picture having are roughly close to those of The Greatest Showman.

Re: Mary Poppins Returns
My understanding is that the omission of references to Julie Andrews is not on Disney’s part— Jeff Kurtti even intended to include an essay discussing Julie’s entire career to be included in the book— but ultimately, Julie’s team nixed it. Some close to the project believed it was due to a misunderstanding, perhaps Julie’s team thought the essay would be more comprehensive and could compete against Julie’s forthcoming second volume of memoirs, which will cover her peak Hollywood years including the making of Mary Poppins.
Julie and her team are pretty protective of her image. The BBC once planned an entire television celebration for either her 70th or 75th birthday (I can’t remember) that Julie’s team ended up inadvertently nixing (they wouldn’t agree to her participation without monetary compensation, which I think is fair but took the BBC aback) and when her movie Von Trapp children attempted to market their behind the scenes home videos (some featuring her), her team blocked that, too— at least initially, I think some of it has finally landed on a bonus disc inside a book. Most relevant to this discussion is the 2007 biography by Richard Stirling, which her team attempted to block its publication since it would compete on bookshelves against her first autobiography, Home.
I’m not sure there’s much Julie’s team could have actually done to block the publication of Kurtti’s book, but Disney probably figured it wasn’t worth the headache or the potentially awful headlines that would have resulted from including her despite her and her team’s wishes.

Re: Mary Poppins Returns
Thanks for explaining. I didn't realize Julie Andrews was so protective of her image. I wonder if this in part influenced her decision to turn down the role of the Balloon Lady.

Re: Mary Poppins Returns
I'm guessing the third one will be about Mary Poppins helping out some random family? 'Cause there's nowhere left to go with the Banks. I have my doubts whether a second sequel will actually come to fruition when this one is not performing as well as expected at the box office.
Here are some additional details from the the interview in question.
Here are some additional details from the the interview in question.
Source: https://www.thesun.co.uk/tvandshowbiz/8 ... ily-blunt/Director Rob Marshall confirmed the production team are already on the case for a follow-up, which would see Emily Blunt return as the lead. In an exclusive interview, he said: “It is early stages but I will say right now that there were eight books, so there’s a lot of great material still to mine. That’s what we worked from, those incredible eight books of P.L. Travers. So, you know...”
He also claimed the franchise could follow in the footsteps of James Bond and Star Wars — and just keep on going. He said: “Listen, how many Star Wars films have there been, you know what I mean? Or James Bond films. If there’s a great character and story to tell, why not?”
Producer John DeLuca also thinks a third film will happen and praised Emily’s performance in the role of Poppins, first made famous by Julie Andrews in 1964. He said: “Emily does light up when she speaks to me about it. And if the people want it, I think it will happen.”
Re: Mary Poppins Returns
I always make the effort to watch all of the movies up for awards season to give a fair view. In my opinion Melissa McCarthy doesn't deserve to be up there over Emily Blunt. At all. It's a good performance, but not anything remarkable. I'm also unsure about Olivia Coleman; she is great as Queen Anne ( she usually is ) but I don't think she was even in the film that much ? The film felt very split between all three of them, so it was a surprise she is in the lead category and Emma & Rachel are supporting.Sotiris wrote:Have you watched all of the films in the leading actress category? Mary Poppins isn't a 'worthy / dark / intense' etc etc film so therefore they felt they didn't deserve it.

Re: Mary Poppins Returns
I find it very odd that they would decide to do another Mary Poppins as well. I would rather they didn't, although the movie, so far, is hardly a failure. At $261 million worldwide, it's no bust.
Re: Mary Poppins Returns
I mean Disney wanted to make another himself but was refused by Travers. So I don’t see why not. I just think they’d have to tread very lightly though because it could become very stale very fast if they don’t majorly switch things up in the next movie.JTurner wrote:I find it very odd that they would decide to do another Mary Poppins as well.
