Because Disney love being such a dick.

I think you're right. They didn't think lying about releasing the other Fantasia shorts with Destino was bad enough. Now, they're being even bigger jerks.

Probably Disney is waiting to release B&tB 3-D in the U.S. when more cinema has 3-D screens. Last week my local cinema are now showing 3-D movies.

Beauty and the Beast: Diamond Edition

Post by Disney Duster »

Okay...so...I just wanna know...

Is this what happened?:

They made Beauty and the Beast on the computer.

When transferring it to film, it looked different, especially darker.

So when they restored it for the IMAX release...they tried to make it look like it originally did, by making it brighter on the monitors or figuring out what to change so it looked the right way when it was on film? Or did they actually make it look how it originally did on the monitors the first time they made it, and just transfer that to the DVD, because the transfer to DVD didn't change the colors like the transfer to film did?

And why did the Platinum DVD look brighter and more washed out than this release? Did they do it again, and do a better job, for the Diamond?

Anyway...I agree that if only one release should be available, it should be the one they want, which it finally seem the Diamond is, but they also should really try, and almost need to, release the original version for those who want it.

I, too, made a small comparison of the 2010 Blu-ray and the 2002 DVD (PAL version). The screen captures were ripped directly from the discs. The framing seems different, but I have no difficulties with the new colouring. Here you go... click the images to see them in full resolution.

Please don't think I'm crazy...just bear with me...

I don't live in the US so I would like to know if the Diamond slipcover that comes with the DVD case (not the blue one with the Bluray case) when you look at it in person is decidedly grey. I'm asking this because I bought the Diamond edition on Ebay and the seller told me that the slipcover of the one I bought is blue...although in his ad he shows the one in the DVD case...

Just wanted to make sure I'm actually getting the one in the Bluray case..

Basically I'm asking can the slipcase that comes with the DVD case be mistaken as blueish (due to glitter?). In some photos I found online it looks like it might... :?

Well, it looks gray to me, but I can see how it might be mistaken due to the lighting or the reflection from the glitter.

It looks greenish/grayish. But then again, I'm colorblind, so I probably won't be able to help you that much :P

It usually looks blueish to me. I've said it before, but BATB: DE is by far the most glittery and embossed Disney title I have ever bought.

Seriously, the glitter is everywhere.

I didn't even realize it was embossed!

*feels up his Beauty and the Beast Blu-ray/DVD combo*

Omg, hellz yea it is! I love it! Glittery and embossed, for a prestigious film in a prestigious line!

Seeing the Blu-ray cover in person, I have decided it actually does look great, and is the best of the covers for this year's BatB releases, the only thing...it needs to be drawn way better! Well, mainly Belle...and the rose.

But ooohhh I can't wait till Cinderella's glittery and embossed! *drool*

Anyway, why can't anyone answer the questions I asked up top? Enigmawing, you can't help?

I wouldn't take it too personally. :p I think a lot of people have generally got to the point where they don't want to talk about the colours anymore.

That said, I'll try and answer your questions (some of it is pure guess work, but hey :p). Well, by the time the Platinum came out, digital transfers had become the norm (every new major animated film since A Bug's Life had used them), so I think that they used the technique in part to getting Beauty and the Beast to look as close to what they originally saw. That said, they weren't making the overall master for that high a resolution, and the lesser quality of DVD probably resulted in the somewhat more washed out look we have on that DVD. For the new edition, they were making the new master for a higher resolution, which is why it probably looks better.

Oh, deathiemouse, if only you were here to write long essays enlightening us of colours and masters like you did so many years ago. :(

Clearly two people agree that it looks kind of bluish...guess I'll really know when I get the package in the mail...and if it's the DVD case I'm going to put it back on Ebay...maybe someone in Europe is going to like that...

Because no one here worked on the film or any of the home media releases, so no one can answer with any authority.

And no one has a a truly accurate memory of what the film looked like in theatres 19 years ago, certainly not if they've watched it at home a couple dozen times since then---memory is a faulty & suspect reservoir. (Ask any detective just how unreliable eyewitness accounts can be. (Or watch Rashomon.) And the vast majority have never calibrated their TVs, so they're not getting a truly accurate representation of what's on the media anyway. Which is why the discussion inevitably and irretrievably devolves into something fitting a few lines in Act V Sc 5 in the Scottish play.

After reading the review on this site, I feel really conflicted...

Like I've said in the past, I do not own a Blu-ray player yet. While I did recently buy my first DVD/Blu-ray combo pack (How to Train Your Dragon)) I still feel a bit cheated that all I would be getting on Beauty and the Beast that is of any subsistence is a commentary on the DVD copy. At the earliest, I may get a Blu-ray player during the summer if I can get a job (I've been unemployed for over two years). Should I still invest the combo pack or just go with the upcoming two-disc DVD?

Welll...you've already bought one BD/DVD combo for a film which future availability is unknown; Beauty & the Beast is guaranteed to go into the vault at some point and it'll take years to return. So what's more important to you: immediate gratification for special features, or having the first-rate presentation when you have the hardware to enjoy it?

This post helped me put things in perspective. I'm going with the combo pack first chance I get. Might as well because I know I'll have a Blu-ray player eventually and then have to re-buy this movie [and considering the DVD copy will be going with me to college and on vacations having the movie would probably be enough] so I'll just go with the combo pack.
