Just read the novel verison of the book, great sketches of the characters though I wish they had a few pages of images from the film. From what i read...this film will be quite different yet retains Lewis Carrol's whimscal humor, there's a few nods to Walt's Alice and certain scenes in different order.

I've got the novelization, but I won't be reading it until I've finished reading my other Alice books. That and the extensive "making of" book coming March 2 will sort of be the grand finales to my Alice-reading marathon. I'm interested in seeing how the novelization compares with the first draft of the script since, even though it's easy to pinpoint what scene goes with what footage, the dialogue is quite different. My biggest problem with the script was how normal Wonderland/Underland was. Only a couple of characters were truly mad and eccentric. That seems to be something Burton fixed based on what I've seen so far.

Dutch cinema owners said Monday they will boycott Disney's Alice in Wonderland to protest plans for the film's release on DVD less than three months after its big screen debut.

"The four big cinema houses, Minerva, Pathe, Wolff and Jogchems -- representing between 80 and 85 percent of all cinemas in the Netherlands, have decided not to show the film," spokesman Youry Bredewold told AFP.

"Disney is not keeping its part of the bargain. There is an agreement between movie distributors and cinema owners that there must be a window of at least four months between the cinema release and the DVD release."

In this case, Disney planned for the movie to hit Dutch big screens on March 10, followed on June 1 by the DVD launch.

This would mean fewer cinema customers, said Bredewold, "as people won't have to wait long for the movie to come out on DVD" -- which is normally cheaper to rent than the cost of a movie ticket.

"We will lose money due to our decision; we expected this to become one of the most popular movies of 2010," added Bredewold, who is spokesman for Pathe and a representative of the National Board of Cinema Owners.

"But we decided we need to send a message to the whole industry: if you don't accept our terms we will never show your movies again."

Cinemas in other European countries and the United States have taken a similar stance on the film, he said.

No Disney spokesman in the Netherlands could be reached for comment.

That's horrible and tragic! But what about those 15-20% that won't boycott the movie, won't you be able to find one of those cinemas and see the movie there? I feel real sorry for you. And also for Disney, since this will influence the box office success of this highly anticipated movie.

And what are the cinema owners thinking? If people wants to see the movie at the cinema, they will see it at the cinema. The releasedate for the DVDs/Blu-ray's won't matter. Don't they understand that Disney does this because to many people are downloading movies without paying for them? A shorter release window will raise the avareness of the movie and get the DVD-sale up.

I'm in the US and everything, but that's crazy! They're doing this over a DVD release? That's kinda pathetic.
I got kind of excited knowing that the DVD release might be early June. Probably not, though.
I'm definitely watching Alice in Wonderland in theaters at least once and will jump for it on Blu-ray the first day. The earlier, the better.

Rated PG-13 for intense depiction of very bad weather.

If Twister had a smoking Caterpillar in it...it might be rated R or X because you don't want a Smoking Caterpillar and Very Bad Weather in the same movie

Seems I vaguely remember hearing a few years ago that Disney vowed to not depict smoking in any of their future films, no matter the character and no matter the banner.

I support the cinemas in their boycott! Disney should really reconsider their policies.

That's all well and good, but do you think European cinemas should have boyotted the delayed Princess and the Frog? After all, most people here have multi-region players (everybody I know does, including the entirety of my extended family which covers several generations). After all, people in Europe will be able to pick up the R1 DVD soon, making the Cinema to DVD window just as short (if not shorter - I make it around 6 weeks from the UK première to the R1 DVD release).

I really think its stupid. I don't disagree with the chains picking their fights, but I think in this instant they've picked the wrong fight. I'd much rather they protested against these stupid staggered releases for "big movies" - after all, even blockbuster Pixar releases are still staggered.

You don't pay anything like $20.00 - more like about $6 (Amazon) and some sites do free shipping. Given the exchange rate you can pick up The Princess and the Frog on DVD for about £15.33. Not much more (£1 or £2) than it will be when released over here. I often import DVDs for this very reason if the R1 has better extras - even if UK releases are available.
