When I watched the trailer, I suspected that there are at least four redundant characters that they could have cut and made a tighter film. I don't know if that will eventually be the case, but with both Raya and this I feel like the unnecessary characters are mainly for merchandise (you need to buy 12 Madrigal funko pops in order to complete the set) and also to see if they can turn them into a franchise. It also seems to me that Disney is trying two different things with both Raya and Encanto:
1. Raya - to see if a non musical princess movie can be successful.
2. Encanto - to see if a musical with a large ensemble can be successful, obviously there's a female protagonist but it seems that it will focus on more characters than just her.

The clip featuring part of the song "The Family Madrigal" is also available on Youtube now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnQda6fNess

The video description reveals Olga Merediz is also part of the cast. She's the second actress from In the Heights to join the movie after Stephanie Beatriz. I wonder who she plays. I think she may just provide the singing voice for Abuela Alma.

I understand you. If I had more willpower, I would try to avoid more spoilers too, because it actually makes a difference in my opinion. The first time you watch a film is quite important. Like they say, "you only get one chance to make a first impression", and I think that's true to movies as well. You never forget the way you felt when you saw certain moments for the first time. And every time you watch the film again, you actually relive those feelings. I think even your opinion of a film can be a bit different if you know what's going to happen beforehand than if you don't. I accidentally spoiled Te Ka's reveal in Moana for myself, for instance, and I always wonder if the ending would feel stronger to me now if I hadn't known that before. I want to make clear, though, that I'm just speaking from my own experience and that's just my opinion; maybe it's different for other people. On the other hand, I also enjoy discovering new details about the films and trying to guess how the story will go, and like I said, I don't have a strong will, so I do a bit of a mix of both things and try to get the best of both worlds. With each new film, I end up knowing most of what happens in the first act or so, but I try to avoid major spoilers from the rest of the film. Sometimes I achieve it and sometimes I don't. I was quite proud of myself regarding Raya, for example, as I resisted the temptation to read too much from leaked books and such, and I think it had an effect on my viewing experience, as I was surprised by many events in it.

Oh, OK. Thanks for the info.

No, Camilo's and Dolores' rooms haven't been revealed yet. I hope they're shown in the movie, and I think they will, but maybe just briefly and won't be as developed as some of the others. I mean, maybe they just show a small part of their rooms, for example.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, it will probably show up for only a few seconds but that's probably why they felt it was ok to partly reuse a design from an older 2d film.
Maybe you're right, but if it just appears for a brief moment, I personally don't mind it if they copied the design a bit. By the way, I've watched the shot again and something curious I noticed is that the audience in the stadium where Luisa's fighting the three-headed creature are all donkeys.
unprincess wrote:actually I think those two Frozen posters I mentioned were originally foreign posters, though the artwork has since been used on packaging for other stuff here in the US. I guess they feel the US needs kid-friendly repetitious clip art to sell the film while the foreign posters can get by with classier mature artwork. :|
Yeah, that's usually the case. Japan or France usually get the best posters, while the domestic ones are more commercial and kid-friendly, as you said.

Maybe you're right that they add some characters for merchandise reasons, but in this case I like that the family is so big. First, because it's accurate to the setting and time period, but also because it feels quite fresh for a WDAS film. Also, as a member of a large family myself, I usually feel identified with stories like these. I know that with so many characters there's a risk of not enough time for the protagonists or some characters not being developed enough, but I think it's possible too to do it right and achieve a good balance.

The advantage that Encanto has over Raya is that these are characters whose relationship is already established, so it wouldn't have to waste time on that at least. I guess it adds to the setting and they did say that the large family is important.

That's true. I don't have a problem with that in Raya, though, but I understand why some do.

The home of the family Madrigal
I know it sounds a bit fantastical and magical
But I’m part of the family Madrigal

Update: there's a 30-second clip featuring the song and some new footage from the movie on Disney's official website.

• Also, it seems the mystery around the creature Luisa's fighting in that shot from the trailer has been solved. According to one of the comments from this trailer breakdown (which, by the way, I found quite interesting and thorough), it's not a Cerberus, but a "Booboo", a three-headed dog that scares children at night from a legend of the insular region of Colombia. I suppose it's like the equivalent to the bogeyman there. And the building where they're fighting is not an amphitheatre, but a bullring. Here's a picture of the Booboo:

• And this might be a bit spoilery. In that trailer breakdown, a quote from an article I hadn't seen before was mentioned. It seems that like Zootopia, Encanto will be a bit of a detective story, which is something I've been suspecting since I saw the latest trailer. It also further confirms that the story will take place in the different realms inside the house:
As the setup for the movie goes, The Madrigals are a family that’s been blessed by an Encanto, bestowing their line with powers unique to each family member. The family lives in a fantastical home and uses their abilities to keep their town prosperous. However, a mysterious dark force seems to be after the Madrigals, putting their house and powers in jeopardy. It all falls on Mirabel, the one family member without powers, to solve this sinister mystery haunting her family.

On the foreground of Encanto is a very Nancy Drew-esque tone that draws you in. The beats of Mirabel trying to piece together information about the family’s past and her investigations within the fantastical realms in their house evoke that of a young adult detective story, with the film’s fantastical titular subject matter serving as the background. The curious nature of Mirabel, on top of her status as the normie in the family, already makes her the quintessential underdog detective.

No, they hadn't been posted before. I like the sewing machine too. There's also an accordion on the chair, so I guess sewing and playing that instrument are two of her hobbies. Here are more pictures of both playsets, plus a toy version of Mirabel's accordion:

At first, when I listened to the snippet from the doll, I wasn't too impressed either, but I liked it much more in the clip. I don't think it'll be one of the best songs in the movie, but it doesn't sound bad to me. Luisa's song and especially the one titled "We Can't Talk About Bruno" were more praised by the people who saw footage from the film. I'm looking forward to listening to those two songs.

As a musician, I would like to add that often the first time you listen to a piece of music you will not be taken with it at all. It is with repeated listening that it really starts to sink in and one starts to appreciate it. Certainly I would not be surprised if after watching this film I may feel rather iffy regarding the music, but will grow significantly fonder of it with repeat viewings.

Conversely, sometimes you come across other pieces of music that you love immediately and without question, yet these examples tend to become tiresome after a while and you may even feel you never want to listen to them again! Whether this reveals more information on the listener's tastes or the quality (or lack thereof) of the music, I do not really know - but I imagine it can go both ways.

Also, keep in mind that quality music is not always necessarily "catchy."

yeah Frozen 2 as well has all these extraneous supporting characters that dont seem to do much in the film(other than exposition dump). I also wonder if this is an attempt to set up material for future Disney+ series.

yes all this! Its also why I don't bother listening to the songs until I watch the film first and hear the songs there. I feel there's a difference experiencing a song with its accompanying images for the first time on the big screen vs a tiny audio snippet on your computer. The only time I was grateful I had been spoiled was when I found out about the Frozen Prince Hans twist on Tumblr. When I first accidentally stumbled onto it I was a bit disappointed b/c I love dorky prince characters and he was the only one we'd have in a long time other than Edward in Enchanted. But then I was intrigued about the idea of an evil prince and thought it might actually make for a fresh new idea for a Disney villain so I was willing to give it a chance. And then i saw the film and well I was just relieved that I knew what was coming b.c I would have absolutely hated that twist if I hadn't known about the spoiler. :x It was just so poorly done with no foreshadowing or build up, ugh. Not even a reprise of Love Is An Open Door sung in full evil relish after the reveal which would have been perfect. I felt bad for the rest of the audience, heh.

• New Japanese poster and synopsis. Interestingly, both focus on the Madrigal sisters.

Image
Source: https://twitter.com/DisneyStudioJ_A/sta ... 3872017415
The main character, Mirabel, was born in a mysterious house deep in the heart of Colombia, South America. The children born into the Madrigal family, where Mirabel lives, are given a "magical gift" that makes each one unique. However, Mirabel was the only one who did not receive the "magical gift". Unlike Mirabel, the magical talent was given to the eldest daughter, Isabella, and the second daughter, Luisa, who were unveiled in the Japanese poster.

Isabella has been given the magical gift of making plants grow and bloom, and colorful flowers are always blooming around her. Her second sister, Luisa, was given the magical gift of power. As a strong, powerful and hardworking person, she is relied upon by her family and the people of the town. While her sisters are perfect, Mirabel is just an ordinary girl who has no special powers.

Surrounded by her sisters, who are full of talents that she doesn't have and who are relied on by the residents, Mirabel spends her time in a positive manner while feeling alienated and anxious deep inside. But one day, Mirabel learns that this magical house is in danger, and in order to save her family, she, who has no "magic," stands up as their only hope. Why is Mirabel the only one who doesn't have a magical gift? What is the secret hidden in this house full of magic?

Yeah, that's true. I agree with all you said. Also, with some artists it happens more than with others, at least to me. Lin-Manuel Miranda's songs, for example, sometimes take me a while to appreciate. Though, there are also songs by him I liked from the first moment I heard them, like "You're Welcome" from Moana.

I usually can't resist the temptation to listen to the songs (or at least most of them) before seeing the movie, but I agree that listening to them for the first time while watching the movie is a different experience. Like I once said, I'll never forget discovering the songs in Enchanted for the first time on the big screen, for example. And, yes, sometimes it can be good to know some things beforehand, because it can prepare you for some things, like it happened to you with the villain twist in Frozen. I also spoiled that for myself accidentally, I don't remember how right now. I had never thought about it, but maybe that's also why I personally don't have a problem with that twist. I guess it now seems I've spoiled every movie for myself , but actually Hans and Te Ka's twists and Ray's death in The Princess and the Frog (which I learned from a Youtube comment) are the three biggest and I think only major major spoilers I've accidentally come across.

They will probably release a concept art of her hand drawn form, like they did with Luisa and Isabela (at least I hope). Merchandise art usually looks cheap and off model in my opinion.

New book covers. By the way, be careful, a couple of Italian books on Amazon and other sites are including images from the end of the movie and people are already sharing them on Instagram without any warning. Just the other day, I was talking about the endings that have been spoiled for me, and now I have to add another one to the list. Well, I don't know all about the ending. I don't know anything new about the mystery, how the problem gets fixed, or whether or not Mirabel ends up having magical powers, but I know a couple of things now and I know some things that don't happen. I didn't get spoiled by the Instagram posts, though, but searching for new covers on Amazon yesterday. I tried to contact them to get the spoilers removed, but it didn't work out. I didn't include those books here because of the spoilers, but also because their covers weren't new.

^What shot are you referring to? But, please, don't go into much detail. I only took a quick glance at the illustration and didn't read the text. As soon as I realized it was from the end and not from the beginning as I first thought, I stopped looking at it. What I learned from the picture is that the house and most likely all the magic will be restored at the end (which is what I expected too), and something about Mirabel, but I'm not sure if you noticed that or not, so I'm not mentioning it just in case.
