Re: Gigantic
Welcome, The Disneynerd! Super cool find. The 3rd picture on the site (brown cow) reminds me more of Abigail from TF&tH than HOtR, but the other cow pics definitely have more expressive faces I guess like HOtR. Pics 8 & 9 (the last 2 cow pics) absolutely are giving off Grace vibes!
Are any of those characters supposed to be giants?? I don't think so but just in case wanted to ask!

Re: Gigantic
I also thought of Tweed's cow from TF&TH. I guess I didn't think of HOTR because that film has such a specific design style.
I agree. See, I honestly didn't know there had been a version before the buddy roadtrip one. With that version of the film, the only thing I was really interested was hearing what the Lopezes came up with since everything else (the giant child with blonde hair, Jack himself whose design made me think of Princes Edward / Phillip unless I'm remembering wrong) looked and sounded so...not appetizing. So that drawing you posted was quite a surprise for me, a movie with a Jack that had a cute design like that would have been interesting. The Disneynerd wrote: โWed May 24, 2023 3:13 amMe too, it would be a much more classic take on the story instead of making Jack's friendship with a giant the heart of the plot, so I'm partly glad the D23 Expo version was cancelled. They could have created a much more traditional and emotional take by making Jack's goal to make his mother proud or something, like in the ACTUAL fairy tale, think about Howard Ashman's Aladdin but with Jack and the beanstalk, I think that would be perfect!Disney's Divinity wrote: โTue May 23, 2023 3:37 pm I wish that version of the film had ended up happening.

Very interesting. The fashion for Jack reminds me of Sword in the Stone. The Disneynerd wrote: โTue May 23, 2023 5:06 am Anyway, I don't think this has been posted yet
Concept art for Gigantic, possibly an earlier version by Scott Watanbe:
Art of Scott Watanabe (2).jp
I dont know how to submit more pictures but there is more on his website:
https://www.scottwatanabeart.com/unpublished-work
Had this version come to fruition, depending on how prominent she was, the cow would have been one of the first female animal sidekicks to a main character (princess or otherwise). Disney princess films usually stick to male sidekicks, for instance.
Also, assuming this is Jack's mother:

I wonder if the story had mother/son dynamic similar to Treasure Planet.

Re: Gigantic
Actually, it seems like the Spanish setting was scrapped. From what I gather, the artwork by Scott Watanabe is from after 2015. I speculate that because of the reported story problems, the version that was revealed at the D23 Expo was retooled and this one was one of the proposed ideas done afterwards.
I also believe he's the person who sells Jack the magic beans. Where did you hear that this character was going to be female in the D23 Expo version of the story? I looked it up, but came up with nothing. The Disneynerd wrote: โWed May 24, 2023 3:13 amSo he would probably be the one who sells Jack the magic beans, the design would kind of match the description of someone who was in D23 2015 (except that the character was changed into a woman)
It doesn't specify on the artist's portfolio page, but I don't think so either.blackcauldron85 wrote: โWed May 24, 2023 5:58 amAre any of those characters supposed to be giants?? I don't think so but just in case wanted to ask!

She looks like an older, more tired version of Jim's mom, but from what we know, the mother/son dynamic seemed more similar to that of Aladdin and his mom in the early version of Aladdin than Jim and his mom in Treasure Planet.Warm Regards wrote: โThu May 25, 2023 7:46 am I wonder if the story had mother/son dynamic similar to Treasure Planet.

Beauty and the Beast and The Hunchback of Notre Dame also had female sidekicks.

The TSitS similarity may be part of why I like those pictures of Jack with Gertie. The older character with the staff looks cool, too.

Thank you blackcauldron85!I think they would have been humans, but what I find interesting about this design is that it looks like these people are camouflaging or hiding and so maybe they knew about the existence of the giants (based on that one design where the people wear the cloaks and huge headdresses), but that's just a guess.blackcauldron85 wrote: โWed May 24, 2023 5:58 am Are any of those characters supposed to be giants??

Oh opps I checked again and I automatically thought that the designs were shown in the D23Expo, sorry! The description was based on this comment from 2015! (page 9)
But still, I'm sure the Saleswoman was part of the D23 version, because the description of Jack matches the one from the D23 versionmaxxie03 wrote: โFri Aug 14, 2015 2:00 am
There were a few designs of Jack, who looked in his early 20s and reminded me a lot of Hiccup from HTTYD2. He looked a little bit awkward, yet very confident. He had a little mustache and beard and his hair was very messy. Finally, there were some designs for a merchant lady who gives Jack the magical beans (I assume). One design was an african-american lady, who reminded me a lot of a female and human version of TLKs Rafiki, while another one looked more eastern European. Her clothes were very gypsy-like and her name was Lucia.
Oh oh, now I cant unsee itDisney's Divinity wrote: โThu May 25, 2023 12:12 pm The drawing on the left in the image Warm Regards posted looks like a middle-aged Belle.

I KNEW IT!!!!!! This song SCREAMS Gigantic!!! It would have been when Jack gets the feeling that he needs to know whats up there in the beanstalk! Such an important song for a J&tB movie, whereas in Frozen 2 it doesnt have such a big meaning, but its such a good song that the Lopezes thought its wayyy too good to just end up in the vault and tbh i wouldnt blame them, I LOVE this songFarerb wrote: โTue Aug 29, 2023 7:35 pmJim Hill confirmed in a podcast that it was, in fact, Into the Unknown:nomad2010 wrote: โThu Jan 16, 2020 1:00 am I donโt know why, but reading that they recycled a song already from Gigantic makes me immediately think Into the Unknown. Thats what they want you to believe, because didnt u say that they wouldnt even get legally nominated for an oscar if they would say that the song wasnt written specifically for Frozen 2?

Re: Gigantic
For real, I didnโt know Gigantic got cancelled until I read it here in this forum and it sucks because I was actually hyped to watch it when it got first announced on D23 Expo 2015! The premise really intrested me (the Spanish setting, the girl, the Sky Giants, a male protagonist that sings!) and I really waited for it to come out.
Itโs cancellation was announced on 2017, how did I not know this?!
I was the biggest Disney fan in my class and somehow, I did not hear about itโs cancellation?! Oh wellโฆ
The other iterations discussed in the forum were interesting and I do agree that the earlier interation was better than the one announced at D23 Expo. But that still made me bummed because from what it was described in the articles about people who saw test footage of this film, it really felt like a classic in the making

Re: Gigantic
I can sort of imagine that song with the "Jack and the Beanstalk" story. At least the chorus, the way it repeats "into the unknown" over and over, and then you sort of have the echo effects--I could imagine Jack singing it as they fade in and out on different shots of him climbing the stalk up and up. Perhaps that's a reason why the End Credits version has a male vocal, too?
I was never excited about this movie back then, only recently with some of those concept art were posted on the past page or two. The Lopezes' involvement was the only thing I had been looking forward to; I love "Into the Unknown" with Idina Menzel, so I would've loved it with a soaring male vocal. I think I would've been satisfied with the soundtrack if that's the case.

Yes I also remember it being announced and this being the biggest upoming movie ever for me, I was even more excited for this than for Frozen 2 and that said alot!!! I remember checking my Disney news by just searching "Disney Animation Studios" almost daily on google lol, this was of course before I stumbled upon this forum. Anyways I googled that and suddenly multiple newssides announcing a few hours ago Gigantic was cancelled! I still remember how much I cried this day lol. I also agree with the test footage thing u mentioned. I remember they said they wanted to aim the shape language of Mary Blair translated in CG, WOW this sounds so beautiful. And I also agree that the other version aside of the D23 one is wayyyy more compelling and way more, well... Jack and the Beanstalk! I really think Jack needs to be a teen between 15-17 who lives with his mother and wants to make her proud. Them wanting to make Jack an adult, with a wife and an upcomig baby and him having a midlife crisis which is why he hates kids and him needing to learn in the process of getting along with Inma how to be a good father??? No thanks Disney I think you adapted the wrong story u were probably looking for A Christmas CarolMoonMarc21 wrote: โWed Aug 30, 2023 7:18 am For real, I didnโt know Gigantic got cancelled until I read it here in this forum and it sucks because I was actually hyped to watch it when it got first announced on D23 Expo 2015! The only thing that still bothers me about the cancellation is that we would have gotten a big Fairytale with a MALE singing protagonist in the centre that would have stole the hearts of the audiences, in contrast to the Disney princesses, the only one would be Aladdin 30 years ago (and maybe Hercules but the movie doesnt take itself as serious as Aladdin) We boys also want representation!!! We also go through heartbreak and we also have big dreams, what are you waiting for Disney!

Also in the meantime this will be the only animated J&tB we get, Ive watched it a few months ago and its worth the time.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otHVQVdcvIM&t=3s
And I also gaslighted myself back then into thinking that Disney didnt cancel Gigantic and I listened to the upcoming Gigantic Soundtrack leak and this Song Inma would DEFINETELY sing in the movie (its fanmade)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TA345Cteiog

Them making Jack an adult dude with a pregnant wife was actually one of the things that really intrigued me about the film. I feel like that's a stage in life complete with its own unique set of hopes and fears that doesn't get a lot of airtime in children's media, and I was really excited to see them draw upon something like the stressful anticipation of becoming a parent within the landscape of a Disney musical fairy-tale. That, and the prospect of centering a Disney musical on a male protagonist for once.
Sad that this specific film didn't gel the way Disney needed it to, but I take comfort in the fact that fairy-tales like "The Little Mermaid" and "Rapunzel" also needed multiple attempts across generations before Disney could finally crack the code, and the results speak for themselves. I'm sure we'll see a proper Disney adaptation of "Jack and the Beanstalk" some twenty years down the road, and be glad that it worked out when it did.

Yes Disney, please make another fairytale movie with a male protagonist! Re: Gigantic
The last time we had a major WDAS musical with a male protagonist that took itself a little seriously, was Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame back in 1996. If Disney puts Jack and the Beanstalk back in development with a new directing/writing/songwriter team, with Jack being either a late teenager or young adult, that would be awesome.
Plus, if they do a Jack wants to make his mother proud but is conflicted with his own want vs need plot alongside a love interest and a kingdom full of giants. It would make a very interesting story.

Re: Gigantic
I think WDAS has been going through a liberal social justice phase since 2015 at least (Strange World was their peak at how woke they got)
I'm not saying anything against it, it's just how they act now
But I really really really hope they didn't cancel Gigantic over the fact that it was set in Spain during the Age of Exploration because it might be a sensituve theme to people or whatever lmao
That setting was so unique, so cool, almost like the Spain bits of El Dorado
And it's interesting how after that cancellation they made movies set in Philippines and Colombia (originally Spanish colonies) almost as a guilt act of response
I don't know if you guys agree or think I'm reaching but what do you think? Were you guys in favor of it's setting and time period or against it?

Yes, both Philippines and Colombia were Spanish colonies before but Raya and the Last Dragon was set in a fictitious kingdom that is an amalgamation of all South East Asian countries (Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Timor Leste) and Encanto at one point in development wanted to keep the setting unspecified, even if the Latin elements in the movie exist. They exist because early on, they know that the movieโs theme was about family and Latin culture was know for that and itโs big families. It wasn't until their planned research trip in Colombia that they agreed to set the movie there.

Re: Gigantic
Rich Moore is directing an adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk at Skydance Animation for Netflix. I wonder what similarities it will end up sharing with Gigantic given a lot of the same people were involved in both.
Source: https://www.thewrap.com/skydance-animat ... e-netflix/The announcement also states that future films from the studio will include โRay Gunn,โ the latest feature from director Brad Bird; and an untitled โJack and the Beanstalkโ project (at one time referred to as โGothicโ) directed by Rich Moore.
Re: Gigantic
This is clearly a new case of a former chief creative officer at Disney bringing their old projects with them to a new studio, like Katzenberg, for example, did with Antz. I don't know how I feel about this. I would've preferred Disney had made it, but at the same time I'm excited there'll be a new animated adaptation of the fairy tale and Rich Moore is not a bad director. Also, if it's a musical, perhaps Alan Menken will do the music since he's working for Skydance now on Spellbound.
