I have several problems with that review but one thing I'd say is that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Aristocats' BD. Excellent transfer all the way.

I've only seen screencaps of The Aristocats' BD (though the UK disc is winging its way toward me as we speak), and I can understand why he says it's out of focus. The screenshots I've seen look very soft - certainly not taking particular advantage of Blu-ray's superior resolution. However, the print looks clean and colours seem vibrant. After all, there's more to good video than just definition. I expect I will be satisfied with the film's presentation once I get the disc in the mail.

Now I want to know your opinion. Based on that guy's assessment of several Disney Blu-ray transfers, and mine, is the professional reviewer an overly nitpicky, content-with-nothing, unappreciative, total bore? Or am I the overly-forgiving, soft, ignorant-if-I-can't-see-the-video-defects-he-does, easily pleased moron?

I mean, the guy obviously knows his stuff. But I've seen clips of The Rescuers BD on my HD TV, and I thought they looked terrific, with none of the splotchiness he talks about. Also, I will be receiving the UK 101 Dalmatians blu-ray in a few days, and if it uses the 2008 DVD restoration I will be more than happy.

I think what's "right" is probably somewhere in the middle. I think his statements would be more suited toward say Cinderella's restoration (which even at times I find to be a tad excessive as a lot of the issues shown I didn't see until they were pointed out). No one had any problems with 101 Dalmatians' 2008 restoration and if this is indeed that in higher resolution, I don't know what to say. Some people want a film to look like how they know it, whether that is right or wrong. Age and bad prints/sources can greatly change how vivid colors are and how saturated they are. In music restoration, for example, some people are seemingly allergic to any amount of compression used. I think that is overly nitpicky. I think what we're gaining is more than we're "losing". In fact, with Cinderella we're gaining. The restoration is the same as the DVD but we've got an increased quality of resolution and audio. All of these, IMO, have been an improvement over their DVD counterparts. I think the BDs are all worth enjoying.

I messaged Don Hahn (producer of Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Atlantis: the Lost Empire) earlier on Facebook, first explaining how huge a fan I was of it and then asking if there was any chance of an upcoming release of Hunchback on blu-ray. He responded!

"[It's] funny you should write me about this because i just saw the Bluray box cover art yesterday for Hunchback. I don't know the exact street date, but yes, [it'll] be out soon. Appreciate the kind words very much. Don."

He said Atlantis should be coming out at the same time. I asked if the sequels would be included, but he hasn't answered me back on that yet.

Sigh. A little bad news. He messaged me back on the sequel question. The answer isn't what I'd hoped, but I'd be lying if it wasn't what I expected. The sequels WILL be packaged with them.

With Hunchback it's a possibility but I highly doubt the sequel to Atlantis will be packaged with the original because it was produced by Disney Television Animation (since it was just episodes from the shelved TV series) and so there probably isn't a digital source. The same thing applies to Belle's Magical World which was not released on Blu-ray.

^ I think you're right about the Atlantis sequel. I also don't think it's unreasonable to assume that further releases (from 90's & on) will be paired together with their sequel i.e. Mulan, Hunchback, Tarzan, & Lilo & Stitch. And any films with two sequels like the Cinderellas & Aladdins will be paired together too

Interesting that he gets to see the cover art .........I wonder if they ever ask for the their approval or anything? Or is that too sensible for Disney...?

Mind you, how much power do any directors / producers have over the marketing materials ?

I've seen clips of Milo's Return on DVD, and I always thought they screamed "digital ink and paint", rather than "hand-painted cel".

Of course, if the film was edited on video, then what you said would apply. Still, I think it would have been rather short-sighted to edit a film on standard definition video tape in 2001, television animation or not.
