Beauty And The Beast: Diamond Edition Discussion Oct. 5th!

The Beauty and the Beast webbie has been updated, now boasting cover art for the DVD-Combo pack and the standard DVD alone. Basically the same as the blu-ray, the only change being the border.

Also, there is a list of bonus features under the DVD part, which include:

-3 Enchanting Versions Of The Film
-Celine Dion And Peabo Bryson Music Video
-Never-Before-Released Behind-The-Scenes Footage
-Filled With All-New Exciting Games
-First-Ever Digital Presentation Using High-Definition Transfer Technology

I really hope they don't put three versions on the one disc - DVD or Bluray!

The original Platinum DVD suffered horribly from colour banding, artefacting and other problems due to too much information being squeezed onto one dual layer disc.

It was a real shame as it was a title that deserved much better treatment - and still does!

I hope we get all three versions but spread across 2-3 discs. Hopefully Disney will see sense (as if!) and give us the REAL Original Theatrical version, the souped-up Special Edition (with extra song, altered animation & colours) and the Work in Progress edition.

Even with the increased capacity of Bluray, putting three versions of a film on a disc will mean lower bit-rates, so it can't shine like it deserves.

Well, we can hope!

With Disney murdering all of their recent DVD releases, I see no reason for them even to bother putting the 3 versions of the movie on the DVD release.

I'll bet the DVD includes one version of the movie, the one with 'Human Again'. The bonus material will very likely be simmilar from the R2 single disc Special Edition DVD.

And that will probably be the sad truth of it

Yes, Disney likes to neglect 80% of their consumers.

(And that's even a low estimate of people who still buy dvd-only.)

The only new material among the stuff passed today is "Composing a Classic: A Musical Conversation with Alan Menken, Don Hahn, and Richard Craft" and the "Belle in the Library" Deleted Scene (both of which I bolded). Everything else (Chip's Musical Challenge, Story Behind the Story, Intro to Reel) is from the Platinum. Combined with the new 45-minute documentary and material from the non-musical Richard Purdum version, this is turning out to be a nice set of new supplements so far. It'll be interesting to see which stuff is Blu-Exclusive and which is Blu-and-DVD-friendly. If Snow White is anything to go by, the new DVD likely will just have the (new) deleted scenes and only one of the new featurettes/documentaries, along with the old "Story Behind the Story" documentary, a couple old DVD featurettes, and Chip's Musical Challenge.

Ideally, I'd like for Disc One to be the Original Theatrical Release and the Work in Progress, since both share the same colour scheme and (presumably) the 1.85:1 aspect ratio. And since the WiP is really just about 30% different material (storyboards, rough pencil animation), seamless branching on it wouldn't affect the bit rate as much as if three different movies were included on the disc. (Or, even more ideally and less likely to happen, add another disc for the Work In Progress version, and have that simply be a port from the master print so all the dust and scratches and other stuff that makes it look "in progress" is intact.)

Then, Disc Two could have the IMAX edition with the Marky-Disapproved Colours, re-touched backgrounds, not-spastic Cogsworth, and "Human Again", and in 1.66:1 as that's closer to the IMAX ratio than 1.85:1, and it'll somewhat appease the CAPS fans who were annoyed that Beauty and the Beast wasn't in 1.66:1 on the DVD (though they'll be annoyed that it's only on the IMAX version).

The third disc can be all extras, all the new 2010 stuff, all the 2002 DVD stuff, the 1991 making-of documentary that was on the laserdisc, and other odds and ends they see fit to include.

I'm about to check out the Beauty and the Beast Platinum Edition from my library. I don't have a working VHS and I desprately want to watch it before Oct. and before I go to Disney World this summer.

I don't know who runs the Disney DVD website, but they sure are random. Beauty and the Beast's webbie is again updated, finally changing the release date to October 5, removing the DVD portion of it, and stating that the Blu-ray will include a Digital Copy along with it.

IMHO I think they are going to put the three version in one disc with the exception of the work in progress version which is going no doubt to be PiP only (like they did with princess and the frog). So we better hold dear our platinum editions for that. Me personally, I don't like the PiP that much. Images are too small....

I wouldn't say that "no doubt" about the PiP thing... I mean, just because that's how they did it with PatF doesn't necessarily mean that's how it will be for this... But honestly, I wouldn't really mind it, since I can already watch it full screen on the PE DVD, and it would be cool to see the WiP version side by side with the final.

But I do hope they make it it's own thing. But all you guys hoping to get them all on separate discs... don't get your hopes up too much. I wouldn't be surprised to see them put all three on the first disc just like they did with the PE. If anything, they might put the WiP version on the bonus features disc... But I highly highly doubt that the theatrical version and the special edition version will get separate discs.

And what about the people they're gonna rip off who are slowly trying to afford the transition from DVD to BluRay? People like me? What happened to the whole affordable deal for families or having the movie to watch in vans?

It's way too soon to pull this kind of scam!

Heh, it's a totally understandable mistake on your part. I do wholeheartedly agree with you. The DVD that comes along with the Blu-Ray is absolutely heavenly. I can't always have access to the living room TV with the Blu-Ray plater and I can crave my urge to watch a certain film by just popping in the DVD on my laptop and watching it.
The digital copy is worthless, I would never actually watch something on my iPhone. heh.

It does but it's inconsistent with ALL the other information on that page and the official press release. The official press release clearly states "arriving on a Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack (2 Blu-ray Discs + DVD) October 5, followed seven weeks later with the release of a 2-Disc standard definition DVD on November 23." The rest of the information on that website and the current box art just backs what the press release says.

Also, that mistake has been on that webpage and isn't new. Everything new thats been added to that page has suggested the 2 Blu-ray Discs + DVD approach.

I agree. Digital copies need to be entirely digital. Including them on a physical disc just defeats the purpose. Them letting you enter you're code online and watch them online is a step in the right direction. Now they just need to make it 100% downloadable off the net, with no disc, and then we have a real digital copy. Streaming it over the net is the ultimate goal, then people won't have to worry about space. Currently, I have no use for them. I'm never in a position where watching a movie on a little screen is my only option or that I'd have the time to watch a whole movie in that position.

DVDs make perfect sense right now. Great to help transition people and really helps when you only have one Blu-ray player in your house.
