1. What is your general opinion about the slipcover? Do you enjoy your slipcovers? Why or why not?
At first I hated them and thought they were overrated because who the hell would buy a DVD for a lame piece of cardboard, but then I got a little kitten and she LOVES slipcovers, so they're starting to grow on me as well.
2. Are slipcovers necessary in a DVD purchase? Why or why not?
Well if they're for free, sure! A DVD that comes with a free cat toy sounds like a good deal to me, if it costs more than 0.01 for 1 slipcover, I'll pass! Money is important to me!
3. How does one take care of a slipcover?
Hold on, let me ask my cat this question.
4. In the long run, are slipcovers really worth it at all? Why or why not?
Well it depends. For me it is because my cat loves them, but since alot of people don't even have pets, I can see why they can be a waste of space and why one would throw them away.
5. What is the practical uses of a slipcover? What are the impractical uses?
Practical: Look above. You could also use it as a dinner napkin!
Impractical: Write a New Constitution on it and send it to congress!
6. If your favorite movie of all time was released in a Super Genius Every-Frickin-Bonus-Feature-You-Could-Want-Plus-The-Movie-In-Mind-Blowing-High-Quality-Deathie-Mouse-Would-Piss-His-Pants-At-How-Good-It-Was Edition, and there was a limited run of 500 with slipcovers (but at a high price), while the general release was slipcoverless (but at an economical price), which edition would you go for and why?
Meh I'll just take the regular one. My cat doesn't deserve THAT many cat toys!
My Kronk's New Groove DVD had a hole in the back of the slipcover as well for the UPC bar.
Although this one looks much better than the Toy Story 2 one, because it actually had 4 sides instead of three, and the edges were sort of rounded. Looked more professionally done.
I don't mind the holes, it serves a good purpose - to prevent theft. I do like the way they did the Kronk's New Groove one, but I guess they way they do it depends on the placement of the UPC bar on the back of the original DVD.
At any rate - it looks like this is the way it's gonna be from this point forward.
1. What is your general opinion about the slipcover? Do you enjoy your slipcovers? Why or why not?
Slipcovers are great but let's not get carried away. Yes, I enjoy my slipcover they make the DVD look so much better.
2. Are slipcovers necessary in a DVD purchase? Why or why not?
Yes, they are necessary especially if the movie made $200 million why not slap a slipcover on that movie.
3. How does one take care of a slipcover?
Let's see I throw them away and then buy the same movie over again without the slipcover. Just Kidding
I put the slipcover back on the DVD when I'm finish watching the movie.
4. In the long run, are slipcovers really worth it at all? Why or why not?
Depends on the movie for example most Disney sequels have slipcovers.
5. What is the practical uses of a slipcover? What are the impractical uses?
Practical: It makes the DVD with the slipcover look all special and make the rest look like crap.
Impractical: When the DVD goes out of print many ebayers bid like crazy if the DVD does have a slipcover.
Get about 10 that has the slipcover of course and then sell them in the future.

1. What is your general opinion about the slipcover? Do you enjoy your slipcovers? Why or why not?
I like the slipcover. Typically it's a little extra that sometimes makes the movie feel that much more special. It also shows that you took the time, typically, to try to get the movie with it, whether by tracking down a copy of it, or by buying it when it was first released - since slipcovers are typically only available in the first few production runs of the movie.
2. Are slipcovers necessary in a DVD purchase? Why or why not?
They aren't necessary. The content should be the main reason behind purchasing a movie/dvd, or for collector value. But then if it's a collector - you're most likely going to be a completist, and want to have the entire packaging. Knowing that some of my Disney movies have slipcovers, but I don't have them (yet) makes me want to get a hold of them even more.
3. How does one take care of a slipcover?
The same way one would take care of anything they'd like to keep looking nice. Handle it carefully. When i clean any of my dvd's, or slip covers, I spray some 409 on a rag, and wife gently.
4. In the long run, are slipcovers really worth it at all? Why or why not?
If you aren't a collector, or a casual movie watcher/dvdbuyer, you probably won't care. It all depends on what value the individual person places on the package. Some people want it all, some people just want the disc.
5. What is the practical uses of a slipcover? What are the impractical uses?
Practical: Keeps the DVD case in good condition.
Impractical: "You know what else? It can also be... a hat." (Peter Griffin, Family Guy)
If I found a copy as I was shopping around, then I'd probably pick it up. But if it was that expensive and rare, I don't think I'd go supa-outta-mah-way to try and get it. (Then again, I'm having a hard time deciding if I want to get the earlier Treasures without the tins.. or if I must have them with tins!!! OH NOS!!!)
Rather than answer all the questions, I will give the definitive answer.
I hate slipcovers, they provide nothing to the actual value of the product they come with. I don't care if they come with the product or not, I usually throw them out, unless they are different from the actual cover of the DVD. For the most part they are the same picture and information as is on the DVD cover box, so what is the use of having it. I am not in the habit of dropping my DVD boxes, so I don't have to worry about them coming open, besides if you close them properly they don't come open.
I think they should save the trees and do away with the slipcovers, they are more a nuisance than a commodity.

I LOVE my Blu-Ray Disc Player!
Boy, do I have big time news for you guys today. <i>Bambi II</i> not only comes with a slipcover, and not only does it have the rectangle on back to see the UPC underneath, but -- get this! -- it's a holographic and embossed slipcover. The titles and characters have a little bit of depth to them and when the light catches it right, it practically sings! Oh my goodness!
Oh and the ugly banners in the artwork sent to retailers aren't really there, of course.

Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's great news. I can't wait to see it on the 7th. I hope Wal-Mart has ones with slipcovers on them so I don't have to run all over town. Thanks so much for the update!
1. What is your general opinion about the slipcover? Do you enjoy your slipcovers? Why or why not?
I love slipcovers. To me, they add value to my collection and also they look neater on the shelf.
2. Are slipcovers necessary in a DVD purchase? Why or why not?
Of course they're not "necessary". But I prefer the DVD's with a slipcover, and I will usually check several stores if I see a DVD I want (especially Disney) at Wal-Mart that doesn't have a slipcover.
3. How does one take care of a slipcover?
Umm......I leave mine on the DVD case at all times (well except when I'm getting the DVD out of course). If it gets fingerprints on it, I wipe them off with a cloth.
4. In the long run, are slipcovers really worth it at all? Why or why not?
Yes, to me they are worth it. I think it's the way that DVD cases have that plastic coating over them - they glare in light. The cardboard slipcovers have brighter colors, and an overall neater appearance. They also help reduce glare when taking a picture of your DVD with a digital camera (to sell on e-Bay or whatever).
5. What is the practical uses of a slipcover? What are the impractical uses?
Practical uses: Reducing glare when taking photos, protects the DVD case, and collector's value
Impractical uses: Neater appearance, brighter colors
6. I would go for the one with the slipcover and pay more money. If it's my favorite movie of all time, I want the best I can get.
dvdjunkie wrote:I don't care if they come with the product or not, I usually throw them out, unless they are different from the actual cover of the DVD.
You could probably make some money if you saved them and sold them either on e-Bay or message boards like this one....especially Disney ones.
There are a lot of "collectors" out there who don't share your viewpoint who would pay to have your trash.
1. What is your general opinion about the slipcover? Do you enjoy your slipcovers? Why or why not?
Slipcovers are alright. Some of them do make a DVD look better, while others do not offer anything to the DVD.
2. Are slipcovers necessary in a DVD purchase? Why or why not?
No. I will try to get a DVD with a slipcover if possible, but if the store doesn't have any copies with a slipcover then its no problem. On Black Friday I purchased Cinderella for $6 new. Even though it was a recent release non of their copies had slipcovers. It didn't bother me. I would rather have the movie for an excellent price then go to another store and pay almost $20 to get an additional piece of paper.
3. How does one take care of a slipcover?
I don't do anything special to them. I take them off my DVD shelf and dust them like I would any DVD.
4. In the long run, are slipcovers really worth it at all? Why or why not?
No. In the end I'm paying for the content on the discs not for a slip of paper. Like I said before some do make a DVD look better, but most of them are nothing more than a copy of the cover art. Which to me isn't worth it.
5. What is the practical uses of a slipcover? What are the impractical uses?
I guess they help protect the case from dust, but with replacement cases so cheap they really add more trouble than protection. The reason I say that is the slipcovers are more likely to get banged up, dented, etc... than the DVD case. They also make it harder to get the movie out and into the player. Sure its maybe an extra 5 secs, but I've had some slipcovers that were so tight on the case you almost had to rip them off to get to the DVD case.
I would personally go for the one without the slipcover in that case. In the end I'm paying for the same movie, but I would be saving money for not having a paper slipcover added to the DVD.
1. What is your general opinion about the slipcover? Do you enjoy your slipcovers? Why or why not?
In general, I think they are an excellent marketing tool. Personally, they tend to piss me off when I want to watch a dvd. Too many steps involved to getting to the dvd.
2. Are slipcovers necessary in a DVD purchase? Why or why not?
Absolutely not, I buy dvds for the movies themselves not for slipcovers.
3. How does one take care of a slipcover?
Remove the slipcover and store it in an empty treasures tin.
4. In the long run, are slipcovers really worth it at all? Why or why not?
No. They are a waste of time and trees.
5. What is the practical uses of a slipcover? What are the impractical uses?
practical- attention grabbers in stores
impractical- keeping my treasure tins company in my closet
6. The general release because I'm cheap.
1. What is your general opinion about the slipcover? Do you enjoy your slipcovers? Why or why not?
I used to like them, thought they were an extra treat that the studio would give you on special titles, but now they're almost standard, and at the cost of having no insert (I think Disney is the only one who does slipsleeves and inserts). Also, I don't really care for them now because they used to have the barcode on both the slip and the regular casings, but now they only put it on the regular casing and a little hole on the back, make the cases more fragile when putting the slipsleeve on the shelf (mainly the ones that have the hole at the very edge) and I actually have one that's been ripped because someone in my household is too stupid to relize that it slips out of the bottom and tried to open it from the side. Another thing with this barcode problem, I noticed that Disney does their holes way too wide and not tall enough, look at Toy Story 2, the can be seen continuing into the hole, and the whole barcode can't be seen, mainly the actually numbers which can be a hassle for the staff at the store you're buying it at. Also, with some of the shiny ones (namely Nemo and the Back to the Future trilogy) the paint (mainly on the corners are peeling, on these I just keep the slipsleeves in my desk with the regular keepcases being the only casing the dvd has. Finally another problem with slipsleeves is that many aren't incased in plassic wrapping, so the stores usually put their price tags on the slipsleeves. Now, about 95% of the DVDs that I buy are at either Best Buy or Future Shop, which has good price tags that are easy to get off, but I seen some that were bought at a store like Wal- Mart where the sticky stuff from the price tag can still be seen.
2. Are slipcovers necessary in a DVD purchase? Why or why not?
I'm not really impressed by slipsleeves, I don't see a slipsleeve on a dvd and say "oh there's a slipsleeve around that one, I have to buy it now!" I usually buy a DVD because I want the discs inside not the cover or casing. Sometimes I've seen a DVD with a slip and thought do I really need to get the slip with it as well, especially if the dvd is part of the series and the other films in the series don't have slips (I'm actually wondering if I could do that, get it off the shelf at the store, take it out the slipsleeve and then pay for it- probably not, since they usually have price info on the slip).
3. How does one take care of a slipcover?
I don't really take care of my slips, all I really do is take the keepcase out to get the disc, then once I'm done loading the DVD into my player I usually put the keepcase back into the slipsleeve, so it usually has the keepcase inside the slip at all times other than when I'm loading the discs into my DVD player.
4. In the long run, are slipcovers really worth it at all? Why or why not?
No, their just a waste of cardboard, I would prefer to see studios spending money on inserts, instead of slipsleeves, because slipsleeve just make it harder to get the discs out (for example, I finally started collecting the Seinfeld boxsets and I find it a major pain that they put the discs in boxset that has a slipsleeve over the boxset).
5. What is the practical uses of a slipcover? What are the impractical uses?
practical: just live with it, or just try to buy the DVD without the slip
impractical: can't think of anything
6. If your favorite movie of all time was released in a Super Genius Every-Frickin-Bonus-Feature-You-Could-Want-Plus-The-Movie-In-Mind-Blowing-High-Quality-Deathie-Mouse-Would-Piss-His-Pants-At-How-Good-It-Was Edition, and there was a limited run of 500 with slipcovers (but at a high price), while the general release was slipcoverless (but at an economical price), which edition would you go for and why?
depends on a few things, are they the exact same, with the slip being the only difference. also, one that big for me, living in Canada, if the keepcase is bilingual, is the slipsleeve as well. but if they are the exact same version, just with a slipsleeve on top of the keepcase, and both are either english only or billingual, so pretty much the same languages on the outer cover, than I would probably go for the keepcase only version.
Disney sends the slipcovers with the rectangular cut-out in the back, or the stores do that? because if Disney sends them with the cut my only option is to buy it with the rectangle.
1. What is your general opinion about the slipcover? Do you enjoy your slipcovers? Why or why not?
I like them myself, but mostly when they open up in the front or have something different than the DVD cover itself. It makes it look a little more special.
2. Are slipcovers necessary in a DVD purchase? Why or why not?
Nah! Slipcovers are just a decorative bonus!
3. How does one take care of a slipcover?
I wipe mine off with a cloth occasionally, but only if I'm watching the movie at the time, and I notice that it's got lots of fingerprints.
4. In the long run, are slipcovers really worth it at all? Why or why not?
I think so. I'm not going to go all batshit if I can't get one.
5. What is the practical uses of a slipcover? What are the impractical uses?
I don't see a practical use. Only non-practical, which is simply the fact that it makes it look just a bit cooler.
6. If I had the dough and could get to the store selling it in time, I SO would buy the slipcover, I admit it. But if I missed the opportunity to get the slipcover, big frickin' woo.
Evil Genie Jafar wrote:.................. mmmmm, Escapay, maybe it is just me but for a person that hates slipcovers you come with quite a few posts/comments regarding them.
Well, he probably keeps on wondering why cover art/slipcovers seem to be more popular than content itself. Honestly, I wonder the same sometimes.
That pretty much sums it up. Just wondering everyone's opinions, and giving the tree-killing slipcover fanatics a chance to explain themselves. But honestly, reading some answers...I can understand the "necessity" of a slipcover from a collector/completist point of view, but at the same time I'm just wondering, "Does it really have that much of an impact on you that the only major defense I see here is 'It looks pretty!' ????"
Also, I should've been more clear on Question 6. The DVDs are exactly the same in terms of disc content and case, the only thing that makes the slipcover edition more expensive (let's say by $20) is that it's a limited run of only 500 slipcovers in the world, with no replacement program or anything.
So for example, let's say your favorite movie was Ghost. And Paramount decided to give it a great big anniversary release in 2010 (20th Anniversary), so they put together a 3-disc set all about Ghost, with the movie on one disc, mind-blowing extras on another disc, and the soundtrack on the third disc. And it's a very impressive set. Sh!t your pants kind of set. And Paramount decides that there will be two versions of this set:
1. Version One: Limited Edition - This set is merely the 3-disc set with a slipcover that is simply a repeat of what's already on the disc case. It's limited to 500 and costs $49.95
2. Version Two: General Release Edition - This is the 3-disc set, WITHOUT the redundant slipcover. It will cost only $29.95

Screw that then. The slipcover's just a repeat, and that means it ain't worth it.

Well....I don't know for sure. The Toy Story 2 one looked sorta amateur, like the store might have done it (3-sided cut at the top).
But, the Kronk's New Groove one definitely looked professional - Disney must have sent them that way.
