Maybe gay like the idea of fall in love with a guy like the princess (altouhght it can be also straight guys with girls also) but it's icon for everyone.

The Little Mermaid on Broadway
In defense of The Little Merboy, I'm going to assume he is gay, and would not in any way use calling someone gay as an insult. It's just a fact that gay is often associated with boys liking things assumed to be liked by girls. Basically, don't be so harsh to him, he was just saying what he honestly thought. He didn't make an insult at all.
Anyway, the Disney Villains such as Ursula, Cruella DeVil, and even the Evil Queen are gay icons not because of their draggish qualities. For some reason they look like drag queens, or in the the Queen's case, she's just a fabulous queen. But when people saw Ursula's wig for the Broadway show in that Perez Hilton photograph, they said drag queens all over the world would adore it clamour for one themselves.
By the way, I always wondered if the people who voiced and inspired the villains would get offended that they are likened to drag queens. If I were Pat Carrol, I don't know how I would feel...though she did play a man in a Shakespeare play, so maybe she's perfectly fine with it.

I've not been on U.D. frequently because it's become something of a war zone between opinions in which everything and everyone is stereotyped. As for not caring about The Little Mermaid, I like the movie well enough, but I'm simply not crazy over it. It's just a matter of preference.Ariel'sprince wrote:Actually Prudence-you didn't missed anything.Prudence wrote:Wooow. I don't care that much about The Little Mermaid, so I haven't been reading this thread before. Apparently, I've missed some very amusing drama.
And is there any reason you never cared about Little Mermaid?.

That's hot.

It's sort of a song.tsom wrote:For anyonw who has seen the production, is "The Contest" actually a song? If so, who is involved, how long is it and how does it sound like? If it's not a song, then what is it? I was just curious because it's listed in the list of Musical Numbers for the show.
Basically Grimsby gets a few opening lines then it's Princesses (Ariel's sisters I believe) singing about how good their voices are to the tune of Part of Your World.
Anyway I've been trying to keep up with news from around the net regarding TLM and here's what I've found so far;
Sierra didn't sing "Part of Your World" for Broadway on Broadway (rumor has it she lost her voice, but as far as I'm aware there's been no official comment). If the rumors are true I hope she's ok by Nov 3 as she really is Ariel and I would hate for her to not be in the role opening night.
The songs are back up on You Tube (nothing new though).
Reading the comments following the Denver review, Meg who reviewed the show went to see it again nearer the end of this run and highlights the following changes;
The ending has been re-done. Ursula now grows larger using tentacles over the stage (this supports what I was told by Alan Menken about the ending being WIP with missing set and tentacles) and Eric now brings his boat to the battle (I'm assuming this means he no longer swims down to the battle and this does seem to support the youtube comment from before the songs were taken down about an audience being told they were seeing an all new ending).
The lighting and sets are all better.
Ariel now does the short dance Eric taught her rather than tries to sing in The Contest. Jane told me she did that Saturday (3rd night) when we saw it again, I was embarassed to admit I didnt remember and only remembered her trying to sing on thr first night! Meg says it works much better in her comments, Jane agrees so I guess I should just agree as well
A comment on youtube suggests that Prince Eric's final line in If Only/Her Voice has been change! The original lyric was "but when she calls to me, I'll know it's her", he now sings "but if I find that voice, then I'll lose her". I wasn't sure about this at first, but thinking about it the change really suits the character at this point in the story where he's still trying to find his "mysterious voice" but is also falling for Ariel as a person.
Also can't remember the source but I have read in a few places that Disney have said there won't be many (if any) changes between the end of the Denver run and opening on Broadway.
That's about all I found. If anyone knows anything else then please post it (still checking amazon but still no sign of cast album! It had better be out by Christmas!).

ChrysLyne, thank you for all that new info! I'm glad Ursula get larger. Is it just that she stays the same size but her tentacles grow, or...? But personally. maybe it would be better if she didn't get humongous, so we still had room for set, the boat, and the other characters! But what I'm really wondering is: How did the set change? Did they get rid of the two structures at either end, what people call the "bongs"? It okay if you don't know 'cause you didn't get all the details.

From what I've read it sounds like the effect is done by tentacles on stage, Ursula herself does not grow. I'm not sure if the "bongs" as people call them are on stage or not. Being honest I can't remember for certain if they were on stage for this scene when I saw it, I don't think they were but I could be wrong.
My biggest question about the ending is still whether or not they're using the opening night version of the finale (with what I called "vows" in where Ariel and Eric say they'll be each other's land and sea) or the shorter (but still longer than film and demo) version they used on Saturday night. Can't find the answer to that. I did ask it in the comments of Meg's review over at TLM Broadway blog but my comment hasn't been put up yet.

Hley everyone, I foundseds as news picture of Sherie Renes Scotts as Ursulases, and it's up-closes and betterses!:

The only thing I don't like is that the shell Ariel's voice goes into is seperate from the shell on her necklace. I understand the need for big props so the audience can see them and all that theatricality, but I would just make the shell on the necklace bigger, without dragging Sherie to the floor, of course.
