The townspeople in BatB may look worse but at least they look like a crowd and not cel layers on a background.

They kinda do in the awful restoration actually.

well that's certainly true. Some of those scenes were low-contrast for a reason!

I think the award for the worst crowds in a Disney animated film belongs to The Hunchback of Notre Dame:

Either some of them are static or are obvious CG people made to move in strange cycles. I know this is 1996 and so, the technology was still being worked on, but I see no problems with the wildebeests stampeding towards Simba in The Lion King. Even the directors comment on the low quality of the crowds in the audio commentary.

Okay, I vaguely remember now. I've only seen TPATF once or twice. I was thinking maybe he was an example of background animation gone horribly wrong!

And Tangled was not great. Quite generic CGI, the look of plastic dolls moving if you ask me.

There is another way to go in animation, and I am still waiting for it to happen.......but I look forward to it.

Edit: I saw this documentary about recent CGI films and they said that they needed extremely exaggerated features for the characters, because if they kept it normal it would look too "real", like human beings.
It comes to a point now that I can't even see if a character is supposed to be human or not, the character designs are that disturbing. Gigantic eyes, square heads, or looking like aliens or animals or something in between.
Hopefully they can go back to very realistic/human looking characters with the "paperman" evolution.

I've known for about a year now that Disney was finished with 2D, but I'm not depressed. For the first time in a long time, Disney is making must-see movies again. Quality movies.

Besides, an entire medium can't just die-- especially one utilized in such cherished endeavors as Disney movies 1937-2004. It'll be back, in spurts maybe, but Winnie the Pooh is not Disney's last hand-drawn movie.

Kathleen Kennedy isn't the messiah. There is a good chance that if she is appointed, nothing will change, it's not like the company president is the supreme overlord, the are beholden to shareholders and are responsible for profit above all else. I'd encourage you not to hope for too much from her.
