Enigmawing, you did great work on Rapunzel. I would have liked it a little bit better thoug if the eyes were a teeny bit smaller. But probably this is how Disney imagined it, not you?
Yes, here I am again with my whining, but I think it just look too distracting, those big eyes. Disney girls don't need to look like that. Look at Cinderella, Belle, Aurora, Pocahontas: all of them pretty Disney girls and their eyes are not out of proportion with the rest of their face.
I just cannot get used to it: great big eyes, small nose and lips. But I believe I'm in the minority here.

Understandable, lol. But yeah, although I admittedly did a lot of guesswork I tried my best to go with where I think Disney is with her design. And honestly, I think the larger eyes work a little better in hand-drawn than it does in CG, but that's just a personal opinion.

The funny thing is that I originally made her eyes even larger!

I based her face on a handful of official-looking Disney pics that all had enormous eyes, but I shrunk them down after I was pretty much finished coloring and everything in hopes of finding a happy medium.

It already has. I have seen it on other posts. It's really cool, and they still have the name, "Rapunzel," than, "Tangled."

Just great! We have been waiting for ages for the WDAS website to get updated and when it finally does, we get zero new images! This sucks!

I just came across a website of a Disney artist who worked on "My Peoples" and posted a picture with the commentary that the characters in this image are COMPUTER MODELS AND NOT PAINTINGS! That is truelly astounding because you could swear that these two characters had been drawn with chalk on paper! Amazing!!! Just to keep the painterly look debate alive

You can see some footage from the movie in his demo reel on his homepage and that look is truelly AMAZING!!!

Too bad it's only a short few seconds. It looks totally new and different. I hope Disney keeps trying new stuff like this. Combining 2D and 3D is what this looks like. I'm trying my best to see the chair as a 3D object... but I can't, at all. It is, right?

I think that the chair is handpainted, but the 3D character matches the backgrounds completely and doesn't stand out in a handpainted environment. What's even more amazing is that this test is a couple of years old. Imagine how much this technology must have been improved!

It was a film being worked on by Disney Feature Animation, but was canceled and never finished. This is the only footage I've ever seen of it. There's some info about it in the book "Disney Lost and Found" that covers a bunch of canceled Disney projects.

MY PEOPLES

I left ILM in 2002 to go to Florida and help convert Disney Animation/Florida to CG production. They were finishing "Brother Bear" while I was there, and it was wonderful to see all of the hand-animated work in production.

"My Peoples" was to be a combination of hand-drawn 2D animation for the "human" characters, and CG for the magical come-to-life folk art characters. As Digital Character Supervisor, I was in charge of creation and animation setup of all Character and Hard Surface elements for this uncompleted Disney Animated feature. I also provided concept design for characters. I had a very small but talented crew, and together with Tony Plett doing backend supervision, we put together a pipeline to handle the CG production.

Unfortunately, Disney under Michael Eisner was in turmoil at the time. After a few starts and stops on "My Peoples," they closed the Florida studio, and I went to Burbank to work on "Rapunzel Unbraided" with Glen Keane. Working with Glen Keane I consider to be the renaissance of my career. Glen was so very good at bringing out the best in people and encouraging artistic perfection and, more importantly, artistic confidence. Glen taught me how to trust my artistic instinct. I was no longer in a strictly technical role, but was a part of the Story Department. I worked alongside the story artists, creating 3D animatics for sequences that were difficult to visualize as traditional 2D story reels.

For those who may not be familiar with animation production, the first phase of creating an animated feature is the "Story Reel," which consists of 2D storyboards edited together with temporary dialog tracks. The Story Reel serves as the "bones" of the film during production. I then used drawings on cards in a 3D space with animated camera to describe complex action sequences.

It was heartbreaking when "Rapunzel Unbraided" was shut down in the fall of 2005 and I had to go back to working in the real world, but I will always remember that time with fondness, and remember the lessons Glen taught me. (Note: Disney's current "Rapunzel" is a completely different project.)

I found that last part particularly interesting. I'd say its safe to assume that this painterly look he developed for My Peoples/A Few Good Ghosts (which looks great) is being used on Rapunzel, just to a lesser extent. This really makes me miss Disney Feature Animation Florida, as they were always pushing the envelope and making beautiful looking films.

that footage looks too...stop motiony for my tastes. maybe its the frame rate, or lack of motion blur but the paint illusion is kinda broken once in motion to me.

The perspective never changes even as the camera pulls back, so I'm betting if it is 3d, that its pre rendered and used as a background plate.

I wonder just how different it really is? I mean... I never thought it was considered a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT project. And this magnifies my dream of meeting/ working with Glen Keane like a bajillionkillionmilliontrillionjasuperzillion times.

You are probably referring to the book "Disney Lost and Found" by Charles Solomon which featured art from Disney's abandoned feature films "My Peoples" and "Wild Life"

Unfortunately, the book has gone OOP.
