"Disney Treasures" Demo.

Post by bd3 »

So basicly this is just a demo of the "Disney Treasures" its not meant for collectors and half of the shorts in the "Classic Cartoon Favorites" series are double dipped and the cartoons are not restored. Given these facts, I do not wish to own any of these DVD's other than "Starring Chip N Dale" as there cartoons have not been released on DVD yet dispite the bad resteration on the cartoons.

"The Small One", contained in "Classic Holiday Stories" (Volume 9) is also new to DVD.

It's going to be exciting finally being able to own "The Small One" on DVD. For years I had the now-OOP video that was released for a brief period during the '90s. I plan to purchase the 2 Christmas Cartoon Classics DVDs even though it omits the ones with Santa Claus and a few other winter-themed shorts. I'm relieved I don't have to buy the UK "Christmas Countdown" DVD which used to be the only one that contained "Small One."

I remember "The Small One" when I first seen that movie in a theatre when I was a baby. That movie came out in 1978. That was the year I was born. The film still is today. I also remember "Mickey's Christmas Carol" when it was on NBC so many times from 1984 until either 1990 or 1991 before the move to CBS came in as well as on ABC right to this way day. It was part of the TV special where they featured the cartoons like "Donald's Snow Fight", "Pluto's Christmas Tree" and "The Art of Sking". It also includes clips from sevral Disney cartoons like "Toy Tinkers", "The Clock Watcher" and others. That's what I remember from a long time ago.

Normally do not buy these for reasons mentioned by others - poor transfers, double dipping but for the small one I may just get Vol 9.

Does anyone know what the original aspect ratio of the Small one is?
And does anyone know if it was originally shown in front of another classic Disney film?

I have a feeling it might have been animated at 1.66:1 like Mickey's Christmas Carol, but it also very well could have been 1.33:1 and been matted to the aspect ratio of whatever film it was shown in front of...

I wish I had my VHS copy still, so that I could figure it out by looking at the compositions.

I will definately buy the DVD with The Small One on it.

I just hope that it is cleaned up better and put on DVD as part of the Treasures series at a later time...hopefully in it's original aspect ratio, whatever that might be.

It was supposedly originally shown with a re-release of "Pinocchio" (http://www.cataroo.com/DBsmall.html).

I'm assuming that the original aspect ratio of the Small one was proabably 1.33:1 then correct?

Does anyone know for sure!?

I took a look at the Small One DVD today, and was not impressed.
The colors are oversaturated, the print is marred with tons of grain and even more dirt specs. The sound is in mono, and at times becomes muffled. There was obviously no work put into preserving this film on DVD. The pluto cartoon didn't look much better, but Mickey's Christmas Carol is fully restored and looked great, although it is presented in pan-and-scan from it's original 1.66:1 presentation from Mickey Mouse in Living Color Volume 2.

Classic Cartoon Favorites, Vol. 9

Post by bmadigan »

just picked this DVD up at Sam's Club since I saw it as an opportunity to retire my VHS versions of "Small One" and "Mickey's Christmans Carol".

But I guess, I am keeping my "Small One" due to the tampering done to the new version. The PC police couldn't resist tampering with the "money song" of the merchants. I understand the reasons for the change -- preceived anti-semitism, but changing the refrain from "we just cheat a little if we must" to "we work a little harder if we must", did not ring true with the scene and ruins the essense of the characters.

On "Pluto's Christmas Tree", I wonder if the opening scene was a later addition. It is the same on the Mickey Mouse in Living Color Treasure set, but in the opening scene, it is snowing quite hard and in the next scene the snow has stopped. It just seems odd.

Are you sure that lyrics were altered just for this DVD version? Namely, you've gone and checked with the VHS? Because the very nature of the Classic Cartoon Favorites suggest that nothing new is being done just for them (outside of some colorful menus and artwork). UD's very own Siren has the world's best website on "Small One" and her page of lyrics on "Merchant's Song" contain the ones on the DVD: http://www.geocities.com/EnchantedFores ... tsong.html

Is it possible that they were changed for a later VHS version? I just can't see Disney re-recording the song for a thrifty DVD like this when it's apparent that no other work has been put towards making the short look better.

I just popped the VHS in the machine and the "simply cheat a little if we must" lyric is indeed present. This was part of the Walt Disney Mini Classics series and has a date of 08/13/91 stamped on the cassette casing.
