Timon & Pumbaa’s Virtual Safari: A cross between The Jungle Cruise and Indiana Jones this is one ride you don’t want to miss. Whether you choose to go by boat or by jeep with 5.1 surround sound and 15 minutes of all new animation you won’t be disappointed
Somehow, I think I will be disappointed :(
 Come on, don't you think it'll be GREAT?

If they have 15 minutes of all new animation, then the whole thing will probably be close to half and hour all-in-all.

I just don't see why they couldn't include a specially selected episode from the "Timon and Pumbaa" television series (which is just as likely to keep the kids, as well as nostalgic parents just as happy) and spend the money saved on a proper, decent, meaty "making of" instead.

Snow White had a good all round "making of", Sleeping Beauty as one (which is a little short, perhaps the R1 release will be longer?). Beauty and the Beast had nothing more than fluff, with almost every segment finishing just as it got interesting. I see the same thing happening to The Lion King (based on the runtimes in the BBFC database).

I don't know what this virtual safari cost to produce, but I'm 101% certain the money could have been better spent.

Then again, I'd be glad if they just included the 30-minute making-of doc they already put together in '94 and aired on the Disney Channel, and that should cost very little to put on the DVD, far less than to produce a whole new doc, at least.

Well, yeah. Me too. But Disney seem keen on selling this disc to kids and - basically - ignoring their (substantial, I must add) adult followers. And if it does come down to either or, I think I would prefer a well done new documentary.

But ideally I'd like both documentaries on the set - an archive 'making of' to show us how the film was presented/promoted at the time and an all new documentary that could go into more detail (and also discuss the sucess of the film - something the TV special does not do). Really to me the TV special could be seen more as historical interest (I have seen it, but cannot remember it's content, but normally these things are pretty light - see the Pocahontas or Hunchback TV specials), but they also provide a good overview of how animated films are made and so are ideal for the younger viewers, while the new documentary (all in one programme, or like the Atlantis disc split up into substantial sections rather than the odd two or five minute segments found on the BatB disc *) would cover the making of in more detail for a more 'enthusiast' audience.

The Fantasia discs have wonderful documentaries that cover the making of each film to just about the right level of detail letting the user explore the third disc themselves to discover more information at their own pace. Surely the Lion King should get the same treatment? They could probably do a documentary lasting 50 minutes or so just on the Broadway show. It's not as if they can plead that they have a lack of information and/or topics to present.

Really, I would have thought it would have been a no-brainer for Disney. While there was no existing Making Of as such, the Snow White disc has archive recordings (the motion picture promotional film and radio recordings) as well as a good "all-new" making of. Why should Beauty and the Beast and Lion King be any different?

As for 15 minutes of all new animation ** - I just cannot understand why Disney would pay all that money for a feature that only has a slight link to the actual film, when that have items in their substantial archive that have stronger connections to the film. If they want new kiddie features how about spending that money to animate 2 new Timon & Pumbaa musical shorts (like their Lion Sleeps Tonight and Stand By Me cartoons)? At least Disney may have the means to reuse such footage elsewhere - something I would have thought would have been to their benefit.

It's a shame Disney don't follow their LaserDisc model anymore. A good compromise may have been to include an extra disc in the Gift Set as well as the book which could include the original TV special, plus perhaps some long(ish) talking heads interviews with key production crew - or even just the unedited interviews filmed for the regular supplements (I would imagine filming talking heads would be relatively cheap). Hopefully such a disc wouldn't put the price of the Gift Set up too much, but would mean a much more substantial release for the die-hard Disney fan base.

* If there's one thing I dislike about these discs, it's the short segments they present. While I commend their 'play all' selection, to me it still doesn't work - each section of the Beauty and the Beast DVD was far too short, resulting in documentary that never seemed to get going when this option was choosen. I think it worked very well on Atlantis as each individual segment was longer on average, and I also think it worked well on Snow White as disc one contained the documentary, while disc two was fun to explore and the information presented on the disc was, in effect, supplements to the film and the documentary.

** Horrible thought - will this Virtual Safari be CGI? The menus are, with CGI characters.

Sorry. Been ranting again.

Now THERE is an idea for a Treasures set.

Disney Treasures: The Forgotten Making Ofs...

This set explores a veritable Treasure trove of forgotten classics - or at least the making of those classics! Presented in their orginal format for the first time since the movie was released, you and your whole FAMILY can enjoy the experience of Disney marketing through the ages!

PLUS as a bonus feature, all the extra stuff you wanted on the Plantinum releases that we couldn't be arsed to put there! With your host Leonard Maltin, this is sure to be something you will Treasure for years to come...

Do I have too much time on my hands here? It is about 12:00 AM....maybe I should sleep....
Nah....

I do like the idea of having both documentaries on there. It has worked for a bunch of other discs, and it would cater to the enthusiast and the casual viewer alike.
This is the LION KING we are talking about.
Mind you...they have to have something on there so we will all buy it on whatever format comes along for the release in 10 years time....

I'd buy it. :)

In fact I was sort of expecting the Behind the Scenes Treasures set to be like this... but for older films. For example I was certain One Hour in Wonderland would be included in the set.

But Loomis' suggestion would make an excellent Behind the Scenes Vol 2 - the 80's set.

I would too and I very much like your idea of two Making-ofs, 2099net. Ghostbusters has that - a featurette from '84 and one from '99. Admittedly, neither is as long or detailed as you might hope, but it provides perspective. From the time of release, and then step back, and look at the film a decade or so later.

Of course, Disney would probably think it redundant and we all know how high their standards for Platinum Edition DVDs. Remember the Rafiki's Three-Gourd Monty Game that was announced? Well, it wasn't up to snuff so it didn't make the cut!

I will be very excited to pick it up. I missed out on Snow White (and STILL kick myself for not getting it) so I will definitely get this movie. It's really good.

Really? I'll HAVE to get it someday soon. But I have no money... $200 in the hole for my car accident, actually my parents' car...

I can't tell if this last paragraph is sarcasm or not? Based on the Beauty and the Beast transfer (overcompressed), the lack of the original Beauty and the Beast soundtrack and the lack of the 100% authentic 'original' theatrical cut animation; all seemingly concequences from the decision to go from a 3 disc release to a 2 disc release.

Had they stuck to their original plans they could have put the special edition on the first disc, the original edition (and WIP implemented by angles) on the second disc and the supplements on the third disc. But I suppose the cost of the third disc would eat into the money put aside for their extensive overhyped marketing budget wouldn't it?

They drop games because they are not up to snuff, but don't even bother to release what they promise on the box namely "the original theatrical version"? I have to wonder about their priorities (and they seem to be doing the same trick on The Lion King).

Just need some opinions here is it another snow white?
It sounds as if I'm in the same boat as you. I've never seen it but it sounds like I'd love it. Hopefully I'll be able to clear room in my budget for it. There are so many dvds coming out....

Luke, we love your sarcasm! Especially about Rafiki's Three-Gourd Monty Game! I think it sounds like the games on Sleeping Beauty that make me ill just thinking about playing them...

I would say wait until the Special Edition comes out since the Gold Collection/Limited Issue was poorly made, it had extremely few bonus features and not even previews. Not Disney standard...

Should I buy Dumbo on DVD?

Post by Mushu2083 »

Was looking around Blockbuster today and I found that they had Dumbo on DVD. Should I buy it? Don't know if I want to shell out $21.99 for it though. :)

Do you have a Costco Membership.
They have Dumbo for $18.99 and a coupon of $5 of Brother Bear.
You should get it there.
Not at Blockbuster.
Dumbo might not get a upgrade.
