In 2020, Chris Ninness and Eric Kimelton emailed me a PDF purposely for a documentary they were interested in pursuing and honestly, my reaction was, "Does anybody really care?" - 5 years later, I'm quaking in my boots as Not Just a Goof is about to hit Disney Plus on April 7th!

One of the elements that really brings the stories told in Not Just a Goof to life is the animated sequences produced by Venturia Animation Studios and directed by Juan M. Urbina - rendered in the style of A Goofy Movie, all of us are caricatured as "dog-headed!"

Before we officially kicked off pre-production on our documentary, we knew we had to have Kevin Lima on board. At the time, we envisioned a short documentary about the fandom, which we planned to release on YouTube. To bring our vision to life, we sent Kevin a detailed pitch deck outlining our ideas. We also had a custom song created by the talented Taylor Peckham, which you’ll now hear during our film’s end credits. Along with that, we received this stunning concept art by J. Scott Lapp. While it didn’t make it into the final cut, it helped capture the tone we wanted to convey, and it will always hold a special place in our hearts as a key part of our creative journey.

The animated sequences are an incredibly unique way to cover stories where the cameras weren’t rolling. Hand-drawn animation can pack so much emotion into just a few frames.

Celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Goof that started it all - A Goofy Movie, by checking out the new film Not Just a Goof - just released today on Disney+ in 4K Dolby Vision! It was a huge honor getting to color grade this film and restore the VHS footage (and some 35mm material) seen throughout.

When the directors approached us with the idea of creating animated reenactments of behind-the-scenes stories from the making of "A Goofy Movie," we immediately had two thoughts: First, we knew we had to capture the hand-drawn Disney style of the original film. Second, we felt like we totally HAD to give the characters a dog-like nose and appearance, setting the stories themselves within the “Goofyverse.”

For all of the animated segments of the documentary we went with a rough blue pencil look to channel how early animation tests used to look back in the 90’s. Why blue? It’s because light blue pencils are easier to erase and don’t appear as easily in scans or photocopies, unlike graphite or darker inks.
