Given the publicity artwork, is Donald Duck going to be playing a bigger role here than in the original show?

The logo for the new series. It's almost identical to the old one.

Re: New DuckTales coming to Disney XD in 2017
Almost. There are a few slight differences, the biggest being the color. So far the small amount Disney has shown of this show seems to strike a balance between the original show, the Carl Barks comics and then something totally new. So far I'm OK with what I've seen, I just really want to watch actual animation and hear the voices before I make a more definitive idea about how I feel.Sotiris wrote:The logo for the new series. It's so nice to finally be able to talk about Launchpad, and he looks good if I do say so. I have a feeling the more layers that are unveiled, the more fans are going to get happy.

I'm glad Launchpad will be in the series! Duckworth, Gyro Gearloose and Magica De Spell are also confirmed to return according to the article, so it seems that all the main characters from the original series will be back. Launchpad doesn't look bad. He's still recognisable. The designs I like the least so far are the designs of Donald's nephews and Webby. I think they look too different from the original show or the comics.

The voice cast has been revealed:
In the video of the actors singing the DuckTales theme song we can see Mrs. Beakley's design next to the caption with the name of her voice actress.

Source: http://deadline.com/2016/12/ducktales-d ... 201872151/Leading the way in the new version based on the Emmy-winning series are David Tennant as Scrooge McDuck, Danny Pudi, Ben Schwartz and Bobby Moynihan as the voices of mischief-making Huey, Dewey and Louie, respectively, Beck Bennett as Launchpad McQuack, Toks Olagundoye as Mrs. Beakley, and Kate Micucci as Webby Vanderquack. The cast was revealed today in a video (see above) of the actors singing a rendition of the original “DuckTales” theme song.
They’ll join other beloved characters Donald Duck, Flintheart Glomgold, Gyro Gearloose, Duckworth, Gizmoduck, Magica DeSpell, Gladstone Gander, and Ma Beagle and the Beagle Boys.

I’m not judging the voice actors, but why cast big name stars for Scrooge, Hewey, Dewey, and Louey? These are classic Disney characters.
It’s like Kanye West as Mickey Mouse. Again, not judging the voice actors or saying they don’t fit. I’m just confused: Why replace the current voice actors?

Big names?! Who's a big name on there?disneyprincess11 wrote:I’m not judging the voice actors, but why cast big name stars for Scrooge, Hewey, Dewey, and Louey? These are classic Disney characters.
Dani Pudi pretty much lived and died with Community. Couldn't do any other show or movie.
There's one actor who's mainly famous because he played a non-regular character on TV Show (Jean Ralphio in Parks and Rec)
And David Tennant..
He's probably the most famous of the bunch, but he's strictly a TV actor. Couldn't go beyond Doctor Who. and his movie career failed.
I think the voice cast is great! It's new and refreshing! And they don't sound like those stupid dolls that you chocked to make them talk... Really annoying..
I also liked the new designs.

Agreed. Their voices are iconic. There's no need to change them to modernize the show. But even if Disney wanted to go with a different approach for the voices, there's no reason they couldn't have hired seasoned voice actors instead of celebrities.disneyprincess11 wrote:I’m not judging the voice actors, but why cast big name stars for Scrooge, Hewey, Dewey, and Louey? I think David Tennant may be good as Scrooge, but yeah I'm worried for the voices for the boys because they're grown men.Sotiris wrote:Well, I am.disneyprincess11 wrote:Not judging the voice actors or saying they don’t fit.Especially the voices for Scrooge and Donald's nephews.

Yeah, but...they were always voiced by grown men (except when Russi Taylor voiced them).disneyprincess11 wrote:I think David Tennant may be good as Scrooge, but yeah I'm worried for the voices for the boys because they're grown men.
The voice cast by the way, looks superb.

You don't have to be a AAA actor to be a big name. The fact is, I recognized everyone but the black girl. They're big enough that you can tell they probably wanted to use them for marketing surprises, not because they best suited the roles.taei wrote:Big names?! Who's a big name on there?

Also, I think you have a skewed perspective on what makes a actor successful. Dani Pudi has been in a number of things since community. He was in freakin star trek for crying outloud. Sounds like he's doing fine to me.

I don't know if I'm allowed to say, but I am aware of at least one seasoned voice actor that auditioned for one of the main characters and clearly didn't get it looking at this list of actors. I'm not saying what I think of this new cast yet (saving that for my podcast), but on a personal level, I am sad this particular VO talent didn't get the part. The only hint I'll leave is that while this person was not part of the original DuckTales cast, they were on other Disney Afternoon shows.

Re: New DuckTales coming to Disney XD in 2017
Well, I do recall that Jim Cummings and Rob Paulson weren't a part of the show.
I understand getting David Tennant as Scrooge. Alan Young just passed, and there could be worse choices, as Tennant did have vocal experience from Star Wars: The Clone Wars. I was actually expecting Craig Ferguson to take the role, since he has more direct experience with Disney voice-acting, but I'll give Tennant the benefit of the doubt. And some other recasting would make sense. Like Magica, for instance. June Foray is pushing 100, so it's probably not the best to try to get her committed here.
But seriously, do they have to recast EVERY character? I'd feel a little more relieved if they got Andrea Romano to be the voice director like she was for the original. She's the best at it.

Best case scenario; they get June Foray to voice Magica and Ma Beagle again.

Interesting enough, David has done voice work for Disney on Fish Hooks, Jake and the Neverland Pirates and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Beyond those and Clone Wars, he's also done work on the current TMNT and a few other animated films.Avaitor wrote:

Agreed about Foray, I think she's basically retired for good. I don't know for sure, but I hear rumor she is bedridden. However Russi Taylor and especially Terry McGovern are still active and working and from what I understand, would have done it had they been invited back.

Re: New DuckTales coming to Disney XD in 2017
We all need to stop being blinded by nostalgia and give the new voice actors a chance. We haven't even heard them in their role's yet. If wanting to give the nephews more individuality was a goal of the show-runners then casting different sounding actors for each of them is a great place to start. I love the original actors too, but even if this new crop is terrible it doesn't take away from the memories or my ability to watch the old series.
Also sometimes having a name is just a way to drum up hype. A know they are no masterpieces but the Chipmunks movies used established actors to voice The Chipmunks and The Chipettes and if you hadn't been told that you would have never known.

Re: New DuckTales coming to Disney XD in 2017
For some it's not a matter of nostalgia so much as it is tradition and constancy. Up until a few years ago, there were only a handful of times that it wasn't the case that a single voice actor was solely whatever the given Disney mainstay character was. There was one Mickey, one Donald, one Daisy, etc.Widdi wrote:We all need to stop being blinded by nostalgia and give the new voice actors a chance. We haven't even heard them in their role's yet.
The other issue at play here is the current state of voice acting. I've had the chance to spend time with a number of veteran and up-and-coming voice actors, and there is a strong aversion to companies like Disney rejecting them for roles in favor of big name screen actors. Acting on stage and in front of a camera is not necessarily the same skill set as voice over. I hear this over and over and over again, and they aren't wrong.
However, it must also be said that there are a collection of actors that are both screen and voice actors and at least two of the new DuckTales cast can claim to be part of that middle camp. Still, it's getting harder for voice actors to make a living. I'd be a rich man if I had a dime for every time I hear about a voice actor who has to find a side job to pay the bills or just flat out retires from voice acting altogether. The question has been asked, and it's is a fair one, how many voice actors lost out on quality work here to these screen actors who would have continued getting gigs to be in things like Saturday Night Live anyway?

First clip from the new DuckTales. It looks (and sounds) absolutely dreadful.
