One can only imagine what sort of f*d up lives these dwarfs had before SW came along! I mean, we know smilies that are drawn better than this, for example

For '7D', I got to create what would Doc sound like. They didn't want to go with the traditional voices and so I gave him a little older voice and well, he’s kind of the smart one and so he talks a little bit in a more of a click fashion. And so, I got to create that voice based on the characteristics and the picture they had of what he would be. He’s the oldest brother, so I gave him a little more age, and you take those characteristics and you're going to add those to the character until it just feels right and then go with it and they liked that.

Noah Z. Jones, the creator and designer of "Fish Hooks" and "7D" speaks out about the backlash against "7D".

Disney Junior is designed for kids 2-7 and I have relied on my years of experience illustrating award-winning children’s books to create a cast of characters that appeal to a young audience.

Along with a wide-range of esteemed artists and designers I was approached by Disney to reimagine the seven dwarfs. A daunting task as an artist, but an inspiring challenge. My take on it wasn’t to play it safe. I wanted to do something completely different from the original designs, partially out of respect for the movie that is the cornerstone of the entire Disney empire.

My dwarfs were chosen and championed by the executives at Disney Junior and given the thumbs up by John Lasseter.

I am tremendously proud of my work on the 7D. I know that Tom Ruegger is throwing himself headfirst into making it a fun and funny show for kids. I certainly do not and will not apologize for any creative decisions I have made or dwarfs I have drawn.

Hello ! Newbie here and I've got to say what Disney is doing to Walt's original classic is really disrespectful. Not only towards Walt but the fans of the classic as well.

As noted elsewhere, the new series The 7D is up and rolling out of the station. Early episodes are testing well and management is happy with the direction of the series. Walking through the unit. I noted a lot of talent from WB Animation on board. This seems natural, given Tom R.'s long tenure at Warners.

The 7D has been in work at the Yahoo building near Bobo Hope airport for awhile now. Over a year ago, production top-kick Tom Reugger told me about all the testing and focus groups the show (and other Disney TVA shows) went through. (The Channel believes devoutly in lots of focus groupings among target audiences.)

The artists have found the board-work challenging; I have yet to meet a director or storyboard artist on the project who doesn't think it's a funny show. As we've mentioned before, many Warner Bros. Animation veterans are working on this project, so it will be interesting to see how it fares in the Disney universe. If a Disney Channel/TVA animated series makes it to air, that means the Channel is confident they have a winning show on its hands.

The 7D, airing this July, is close to completing work on its first group of episodes, with many storyboard artists on hiatus as storyboard revisionists continue work into June.

I LOVE the designs!


They're so detailed and creative, really high quality art. So what if its quirky, just because it's not sophisticated in a classy sense does not mean it's not poor quality in any respect.

Also remember Walt did not create the characters of the 7 Dwarfs. Many purists could say the same thing about The Jungle Book being disrespectful from the classic original. Whilst these characters are based on Walt's version, Walt clearly approved of liberal interpretations of classic characters to suit a different audiences.

Maurice LaMarche: My self-esteem. No, currently, I'm working on a project for Disney called The 7D, which are the seven dwarves about twenty years before they met Snow White. So they all have all their hair, and their hair is its original colors; nobody’s grey. And of course, needing to fixate on a beautiful female figure, they live to serve Queen Delightful, who is the queen of the kingdom. And they've done a very different take with them. We’ve gone away from the Snow White movie, and it looks almost like a 1960s Jay Ward cartoon, kind of Bullwinkle, George of the Jungle. Very simple drawings. And each one’s voice is very distinct. Kevin Michael Richardson is Happy, and he just plays it so happy; and when Kevin is full of joy, the room bursts with it. And Bill Farmer is Doc. Billy West is Bashful, and Billy uses his upper, upper, upper range, and he’s like, so adorable that even though he’s a 62-year-old man, you just want to pinch his cheeks. And I do Grumpy; and, again, I do a lot of my voices by throwing two things into the hopper and coming up with a unique voice. [...]

Q: You beat me to it but I was going to ask you about the upcoming Disney Junior show “The 7D”; can you give us a sneak preview?

Bill Farmer: ”The 7D” is directed by Kelly Ward, who directed all six/seven years of “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse”, so I know him very well. Tom Ruegger, who did “Animaniacs”, is the producer. It is kind of a prequel in the way to “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”. So there is no Snow White. They look much different as well from what you would expect with the classic Dwarfs. They decided to reinvent them since the things that they do are in a more modern fairy tale land. So rather than have the traditional dwarfs change their characters, they started from the ground up and came up with a new incarnation of these dwarfs. They are very well written and we have an amazing cast. It is definitely the who’s who in the voice over world including Maurice LaMarche, Kevin Michael Richardson, Billy West, Scott Menville, Stephen Stanton, Dee Bradley Baker and many more. We just finished recording the first season of 20-30 episodes and it was such a blast. They are being animated as we speak and it should hit the air somewhere around June this year. So I get to voice Doc and also a new dog character named Sir Yips A-lot, which was cool since I go to do more dogs besides just Pluto.
