Re: Mary Poppins Discussion Thread

Today marks 60 supercalifragilisticexpialidocious years since Walt Disney’s Mary Poppins premiered at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. I think my obsession with Julie Andrews actually began because my childhood VHS of the movie, after the film ended, showed black and white footage from the Hollywood premiere, which featured Julie, Dick, and Walt Disney.

Here’s an article from the Guardian celebrating the anniversary: https://www.theguardian.com/film/articl ... nniversary

To mark the anniversary, Disney is releasing a slew of new merchandise including a 60th anniversary vinyl boxset, ornaments, Minnie ears, a limited edition doll, and more!

“Oh it's a jolly 'oliday with Mary
Mary makes your 'eart so light!
When the day is gray and ordinary
Mary makes the sun shine bright!
Oh, 'appiness is bloomin' all around 'er
The daffodils are smilin' at the dove
When Mary 'olds your 'and
You feel so grand
Your 'eart starts beatin' like
A big brass band!
It's a jolly 'oliday with Mary
No wonder that it's Mary that we love!”

I know my parents took us to Mary Poppins during its initial release re-issue in 1966, but I don’t really remember it. What I remember is the 1973 rerelease. I loved it and immediately used my allowance to buy the soundtrack. Happy Anniversary to “Walt Disney’s Greatest Achievement” as it was billed in ‘73.

I didn't have the chance to see this classic in the big screen. I remember to watch it on TV all christmas. My parents recorded it for me on a tape. I don't know why they didn't buy it on VHS. We had a great collection but never had this one. Happy anniversary to this wonderful movie!

I still remember the first time I saw the movie. It aired on TV, and I was in love with the music. Afterwards, I learned that Julie Andrews went on to star in The Sound of Music; my mom always told me about that movie, and that she personally liked it better than Poppins.

Anyway, I never owned the movie as a kid. The first ever edition I bought was the 2004 Special Edition DVD; I had bought it in London, which I thought was a cool coincidence.

The first time I saw the movie, I can't remember how old I was. I only remember I was a little tyke when I first watched the movie on VHS when I was at my grandmother's house. It was one of the few ways I got to watch Mary Poppins because, for whatever reason, my family never got our own copy until 2002. Heck, my grandmother loved Mary Poppins so much, she eventually got a replica of Mary's umbrella from a (probably long defunct) Disney catalog.

Image

She even gifted the umbrella to me as a posthumous graduation gift when I graduated from college in 2012. When she mentioned giving it to me as a graduation gift, I didn't know why she wanted me to have it. At least, until we learned the night before she passed away that she had breast cancer.

It's because of my grandmother that I came to love the Disney film so much. She was much like my family's own real life Mary Poppins, practically perfect in every way...

Your story is so beautiful. I'm sure that your grandma is really proud of you and she knew that you would take care of her beautiful umbrella.

I liked your story, too, DisneyJedi. It's so nice to have a family memory connection to the film.

That's a sweet story, DisneyJedi.

Funny, I had a similar thing where I could only watch Mary Poppins (and The Wizard of Oz) at my maternal grandparents' house because we didn't have a copy. (Those two grandparents of Mary Poppins were very much NOT like Mary Poppins though in my case. :P) My mother said when I was older that she did that purposely to keep those films special because we would've watched them nonstop like the other family films if they were at home.

I knew Tony Baxter had developed that Mary Poppins attraction, but I did not know he was such a big fan of the movie— I’m glad he liked the sequel, too. It’s not perfect, but a lot of care went into it, and I’m glad he also recognizes that.

Supposedly, a Mary Poppins attraction was planned for WDW (I’m not sure if it was Baxter’s idea or something else) but Roy Disney torpedoed that and they built a clone of Disneyland’s Peter Pan instead. 55 years later, Bob Chapek announced a Mary Poppins attraction at D23 with Dick van Dyke on stage… and that didn’t happen.

She really deserves a lovingly done dark ride, like Baxter envisioned. Maybe one day…

The ride he made is very impressive, even more so knowing he wasn't even an Imagineer yet, not even an artist yet!! I agree that Mary absolutely should have a ride or attraction. That fine art print is really nice too, equally impressive in its history. Too expensive for me, but it's nice.

^^
CBS made a TV show starring Mary Wickes (The Hunchback of Notre Dame) in 1949.
I don't know if I had read of this before, but I didn't remember knowing this. Wow!

Not yet, have you? I’m not in a hurry since the price tag is so high and I don’t think the collection is limited. I’ve seen it’s about $50 cheaper if you don’t buy directly from Disney.

I didn't either, I think I'll wait for a deal on Amazon. As you said, it's not limited, so there's no rush :)

This makes me think of a 4K BD— have we gotten any catalogue Disney titles on physical media this year? Is it because of the move to Sony? I want my Mary Poppins 4K, dammit!
