From the look of the menus, it looks like "Your Favorite Things" will be like the "Midnight Experience" from Rocky Horror Picture Show. Various in-movie options that play in different corners of the film. Too bad there's no live shadowcast, which would have been quite interesting! Especially if it included someone dressed up as the carburator near the end.
And my goodness, Charmaine Carr's EYES are so frickin' blue on that Blu-Ray. Any bluer and she'd be a Fremen, not a von Trapp!

I own it, and while I haven't seen the previous editions, the Blu-ray looks absolutely fantastic. Charmaine Carr's eyes are freaking blue in the movie, the backgrounds of Salzburg (mostly) look almost three dimensional, and it sounds incredible.Cordy_Biddle wrote:DVDBeaver has posted it's review for the Blu-ray. Picture quality will be literally night and day, judging by the comparisons between BD and the two previous DVD releases.
They don't seem to go into much detail with the extras though. It's a great review anyway.
Concerning the extras, this edition collects most (if not all) of the extras of the previous two versions, and adds a few great new ones. The restoration featurettes are extremely interesting, so if you're into that stuff, you have to watch it.

The From Fact to Phenomenon documentary is there. There's a new interactive feature (similar to the Hyperion Studios feature on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) called Musical Stages, which contains many featurettes, among which are the original Broadway production, comparisons between the movie and the Broadway show, the songs, and the movie restoration.Cordy_Biddle wrote:Does it include the "From Fact to Phenomenon" documentary? I've always regretted selling my old Five Star edition, mainly because of it. Also, is there a nice new featurette on the Broadway musical?

I just came back from the sing-along event and it was amazing!!!!!!!! It has always been my dream to see it on the big screen and that dream finally came true tonight! I went with six of my really good friends, with two of them seeing it for the first time. It started with the mini-documentary "I'll Sing Once More: The Sound of Music Today". It was a great ten-fifteen minute program about The Sound of Music's impact on popular culture and the true story behind the movie & stage play. Like I stated, it was good but it gave a little bit away for those who had never seen the movie. For example, there was a segment on Nonnberg Abbey and it stated that two very important things happened here: Maria was told to leave the Abbey and Maria's wedding to Georg. For people who haven't seen the movie, it totally spoils it for them.
After the documentary, the movie started. It was beautiful on the big screen. Everything was so vivid and clear. It feels like watching a 3-D movie. You lose so much detail when watching it on VHS, DVD, or on television. I have seen it over a million times, but there were things and people I never noticed before. For example, I could see the title of the book Brigitta was reading in the beginning. Also, the Festival Program had 1938 on it (for those who didn't know the movie took place then). I could even see the address to Villa Von Trapp. There were extra nuns, birds, and even party guests I had never noticed. In Maria's room, you can see the time of night when "Favorite Things" took place (it was after 8 when the song began and almost 10 when the scene ended), a bible on her table, and other things. Many people have stated that they can't see wedding rings on the main characters' hands. Even though I've seen them on the DVD, on the big screen you can clearly see the Captain's ring on his right hand, Maria's ring on her right hand, and the Baroness's huge diamond from her first marriage. Frau Schmidt even wears a watch! Also, places and people were exaggerated on the big screen. For example, Eleanor Parker's The Baroness was deliciously evil and conniving. There was a scene where it screamed to me that she deserved an Oscar nomination for her role. Lots of facial expressions, especially from Elsa, the Captain, and the children (Louisa seems like an angry middle child in most scenes). In the emotional scenes, you can see tears in Maria's eyes.
As for things I would change:
1. Correct the lyrics to "I Have Confidence" (instead of "It's healthy, all I trust I leave my heart to," the caption stated "It tells me all I trust I leave my heart to")
2. Add the intermission and Entr'Acte. My friends expected an intermission, but the film went straight into Act Two after the first act ended. Although I didn't leave my seat and the movie went by swiftly & didn't feel like 3 hours (it really went by really quick...nice pacing), I stil would have added the break so the audience could stretch and use the bathroom.
3. I would advertise it better and make it more than two nights.
All in all, it was a lovely experience. They even had the lyrics to the Preludium. When it appeared, the audience laughed but only one of my friends and I were brave enough to sing the Latin lyrics. I would certainly go again! I wish there was another showing! I'm hoping they do a proper re-release for the 50th anniversary in 5 years!

Big savings when you buy "Sound of Music" and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" together on Blu-ray - $29.48 for both (that's an extra savings of $10).

I would so buy this if I had money for it. I already have the 40th Anniversary DVD, but seeing as this 45th Anniversary Edition combines the Five Star Release and the 40th Anniversary DVD and adds even more bonus material, I would totally upgrade. I need more Julie in my life.

I got the digibook from Target, but since it's technically a Christmas present because my mom reimbursed me, I cannot open it. It looks awesome, though, even if apparently it has the same iffy disc sleeves as the "Rocky Horror" Blu-ray.

I'm not Disneykid (for instance I'm very much not a fan of Disney's Alice in Wonderland!) but...
I don't know specifically what you are referring to Duster, but Trust me, the BD image is superb. If anyone has doubts about the benefit of Blu-ray (including yourself perhaps) then seeing The Sound of Music on Blu-ray will totally remove them. It is quite frankly a miracle. Never before have you ever seen this film looking a fraction as good as it does now.

Thank you Netty, but I do already love Blu-ray, I love Disney's Alice in Wonderland (why don't you?!) and if you would check out the review, and the comparison screencaps, maybe you would see what I mean?
The sky is less blue and you can hardly make out the sky from the clouds in the new transfer!
I still want Disneykid's comment!

The sky is still visible on the BD, just not as heavily as the DVD. Perusing through my DVD copy form five years ago, I find the colors are too pumped up in many scenes. Characters are constantly walking around with extremely pink fleshtones, and the nighttime scenes aren't convincing at all due to the artificial brightness. As I said in my review, I'm not going to pretend I know what this film should look like, but to my eyes, the new restoration appears more accurate. This one was taken from the original camera negatives whereas the previous transfers were taken from prints several generations removed.
