Does anyone know if this will have "Human Again" in it? Or are they going to 3D-ify the original theatrical cut (hopefully the 1991 version...as nice as the "<strike>spruced up and falsely-advertised cut</strike> theatrical cut on the Platinum Edition was, it'd be nice to see the 1991 version popping up again).
Well, considering the original 1992 tape is still my favorite version of the film, I doubt this 3-d makeover will make any difference.
I just can't stand to watch the beleaguered 2002 DVD. It's just not the movie I grew up watching and having so many fond memories of.
I'd rather watch the pan & scan version but with those rich, natural colors that are for me, Beauty and the Beast.

I did some research about Blurays and 3D,
An average Bluray can carry 25 GB, but Disney movies are actually 50 GB each disks for some reason. (both incl. bonus features)
3D movies are 6X faster than 2D movies, so if a 3D Disney movie such as BATB or TNBC was to be released on Bluray, that would mean it would need a 300 GB disc, although I haven't heard of a 300 GB BD being announced, I heard that Pioneer is going to make 400 GB which will be released by 2010, and Pioneer says that it can be played on current Bluray Players and PS3s, so maybe we don't have to change our players to upgrade to 3D after all.
OK 400 GB, now that could fit the 3D version of BATB incl. specials features (300 GB), Original version (25 GB), and the Imax Version (30 GB), that would only leave us with 5 GB ( which would not fit the work in progress edition unless they make it standard def.), so if they wanted to incl. the work in progress version then they'd probably put it in the 2nd disk. It's good to be a nerd sometimes !
But I want to know what you guys think about my theory ?

3D Blu-ray may be closer than you think. And not on discs more then 50GB.

Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

That's because they're dual-layer Blu-Ray Discs.Jack Skellington wrote:An average Bluray can carry 25 GB, but Disney movies are actually 50 GB each disks for some reason. (both incl. bonus features)

Yup, it's during the "Belle" Reprise.Neal wrote:I have a question about the actual film "Beauty and the Beast" - was there a scene where Belle walks through a meadow of flowers with a basket?
If so, where's it at in the film?

I think that it's Chapter 3 on the DVD.
*edit* So, she holds the basket and then gets rid of it before she goes through the meadow...but there are flowers in the meadow...

Maybe that would imply that Disney give us more Bonus features compared to other studios.Escapay wrote:That's because they're dual-layer Blu-Ray Discs.Jack Skellington wrote:An average Bluray can carry 25 GB, but Disney movies are actually 50 GB each disks for some reason. In the last PE when they had the Original Version and the Imax Version, did they need about the same amount of data space for each of the versions, or did the Imax version need just a few more space and just uses most of the data saved for the original version.

It would need just a bit more space. It's called seamless branching. Basically, the IMAX scene, and the scenes with the cleaned backgrounds are put in instead of the scenes in the theatrical version, your dvd player switches them, and not a whole lot of disk space is taken away by yet another version of the same movie.Jack Skellington wrote:

Thanks for answering that, Kubrick Fan !
Ok now I'm gonna have to recalculate everything !
*puts on nerdy glasses*
3D version with bonus features (300 GB)
+
Original version (25 GB)
+
Imax Version (5 GB)
+
Work in Progress Version (20 GB)
= 350 GB
Good news everyone, looks like you could get all 4 versions in one BD after all !

More 3D Bluray news :
http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=2260
http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=2252
So basically 3D Bluray might be out on early 2010 if everything goes according to plan (as if anything does these days), but the only problem is that all the studios will have to agree on one standard, which will probably take some time, but I just hope that this all gets done by the fall when BATB will be released.

bluray is only half the picture
Disney will still need to choose a process for the actual BATB conversion.
Perhaps it will be an outgrowth of the DTS restoration technology, perhaps something else. As mentioned, they will have to do some tricks with lighting and/or re-shading characters/layers to avoid the viewmaster cutout look.
Then again, perhaps they are perfectly happy with that look.
Having BluRay standards supporting 3D, and ever improving 3D glasses for home use, helps make a good case for the project.

I got a chance to see some 3-D images for the retooled Beauty and the Beast, and I can tell you now, without fear of contradiction, that it looks like ... 3-D. Says an artist:
"Part of what's hard is everything is hand-drawn, so you have lots of flat shapes, no highlights on hair, no individua strands, no testure on the sides of faces. That looks fine for hand-drawn animation, but getting the drawings into stereo mode is a challenge ..."
Especially when it was never put together that way.

A resistant reader would say that it is as if they are purposely re-creating a Disney classic into a bad-looking CGI film in order to encourage critics to once again negatively compare it to the all high-and-mighty pixar.
Honestly, I'm not excited for this. Unless they are gonna pour tons of money into this, it's gonna look like Mickey's PhilharMagic which is fine for the attraction, but not for a whole movie.

The teaser trailer of Toy Story 3 was shown at an event, and the whole "Belle" sequence from B&tB's 3D release was also shown:
Zoradi, whose polished presentations in support of the 3-D format and Disney's stereo slate have become a regular feature at 3-D conferences, also showed the entire first song, "Belle," from the "Beauty and the Beast," converted to 3-D.
"Think of the potential of what could follow if this is successful," he said. Pic will be released on Feb. 12.
