It's not. It's on the old SE and is basically fluff about "Yay, the film is back in theatres!" while trying to sell the fact that Oliver & Company heralded the start of a more realistic animation style.Pasta67 wrote:That "Return of a Classic" featurette had better be frikkin' amazing to make up for the losses.
There is the 3-minute featurette on Beauty and the Beast: Platinum Edition that discusses the Special Edition and IMAX release.Pasta67 wrote:And it has potential too, since I can't think of an actual featurette that we've gotten about a film's re-release before.
I wouldn't be surprised if the gallery and fun facts remained and just go unmentioned (Disney Press Releases are notorious for withholding information, after all). But I have a feeling the trailers are gone. They were gone on re-releases for Dumbo, Saludos, Amigos, The Three Caballeros, The Aristocats, and The Fox and the Hound.Pasta67 wrote:Hopefully the art gallery, the fun facts, and the trailers are included but just not mentioned on the press release. Disney's done it before, so I'll keep hope.

BUT - it says for the first time in High Definition, so that would mean there IS a Blu-ray release, no????!!!!!!!!

It's a boldfaced lie. If a Blu-Ray was being released, there'd be a separate Blu-Ray SRP listed and a bit more promotion about it being on Blu-Ray at all. It's more likely that the film itself has been scanned/restored in high definition (how much or how little restoration was done remains to be seen), but the actual DVD transfer is still standard definition (as high definition on DVD is...well, HD-DVD or Blu-Ray! Or perhaps Superbit, but that wasn't really...).kbehm29 wrote:BUT - it says for the first time in High Definition, so that would mean there IS a Blu-ray release, no????!!!!!!!!
It's like how Image Entertainment advertised that the "Definitive Edition" releases for "The Twilight Zone" was high definition, when in reality it was remastered from high definition transfers and still downconverted to standard definition for DVD, though it's still a much better image than the old releases (see here).

Awwwwwww man! That isn't right. There is no reason why any/all rereleases from this point forward shouldn't be on Blu-ray. I don't want to buy the DVD again! If there were a Blu-ray release I would definitely upgrade. Even for a new slipcover, I'm not going to do it. Come on, Disney! Get your head in the game.

Yay to this movie being released, as I don't actually own it, just like I got the chance to get Robin Hood, Aristocats, and The Sword In The Stone in 'Special Editions' (if Disney even has the balls to call them that ..!)
But I was wondering if this means there is hope that someday, when I am old and grey, Disney will deem to release Hercules or Hunchback in a 'Special Edition' .... ?!?! Of course I would love amazing bonus features, but I could live without them for the chance of a really wonderful picture quality. What do you think the chances are ?

Dissappointing! That is what this DVD's gonna be!
I've been holding out for a better edition of this movie but this new version seems absolutely pointless! Not one single new thing is being added to this DVD except for a better picture quality! I mean the Special Edition wasnt really a special edition (it was just a Gold Collection quality DVD). They're bringing back all of the old pointless dvd features from the SE without a new real special feature (what makes these people at Disney think we will replace our DVDs for one new measly remote control game?!). I was hoping for a better/longer making of featurette. And not even one deleted scene? They couldve at least done something to differentiate themselves from the old release with one new thing. (Even Robin Hood and The Aristocats had one deleted scene each).
I'm not big on the cover art either. It doesnt particular matches the style of the film itself and seems too similar to the Lady and the Tramp 2's latest dvd coverart.

Which is why we have the marketing term "Full HD 1080p." There's no standard industry definition for what "high definition" means, or for contextualizing its use in the consumer vs. professional/post-production sense, so there's technically nothing wrong with labeling something "remastered in high definition!" if that's the case, and such treatment should result in improved picture quality. But the end product on DVD won't be in HD. Caveat emptor should be one's watchword.Escapay wrote:It's more likely that the film itself has been scanned/restored in high definition (how much or how little restoration was done remains to be seen), but the actual DVD transfer is still standard definition (as high definition on DVD is...well, HD-DVD or Blu-Ray! I'm not really familiar with the specifics, but it is possible to author a limited amount of HD content on a dual-layer DVD that will play back on BD hardware. It's not something we'll see studios using, though; it's basically a solution for folks wanting to create physical media for content they've shot in HD themselves.

Sorry if it pisses you, but this is my opinion and I'm gonna stand by it, and I have always did just that from the first thread that I posted on Bluray in which most UD members said that they think is a pointless format, I did except their different opinions.....up until they started to buy Blurays !singerguy04 wrote: Now please, read this a few times and let is sink in. We will probably not see any other DAC's on blu-ray (besides the PE's of course) for another year. Just anticipate that, because personally I'm getting tired of reading how pissed off people are that this or that release isn't going to be on blu-ray. It's really naive of you all to sit here and critisize films or releases of films and not understand why this release is not on blu-ray.
Look this is what I think, I basically don't see why I should spend my hard earned money on this movie which got released on DVD twice already, I'm saying that if they did release it on Bluray I would be more persuaded to purchase it, but they didn't so... it's a no for me, and if you already own the last edition of this movie and your gonna buy this again then I would highly recommend you to look up the word naïve in the dictionary.

No, i'm sorry. that wasn't what i was getting at. If you don't want to buy it, that's fine. I'm not saying everyone should go buy this release, it is a waste of money lol.
My point was just that there seems to be a lot of people out here that are always complaing about how there isn't enough special features, the picture and sound need to be restored better, there should be more documentaries, and the list goes on and on and on... but when it comes to releases the films on blu-ray, they want everything right now! And please lets not say that "well they could've at least ported over said extras from past releases", because if that were the case then we'd all complain about how there wasn't anything new and why should we upgrade when there is nothing new lol.
The point that i'm trying to get at is that the DAC's are probably going to take a little longer to move up to blu-ray and that this is probably a good thing. In fact, Disney is probably going to release some pointless DVD releases jsut to earn some cash. Sure, they might not sell all that well but it'll be some kind of income. Then maybe, just maybe, they'll use this money to afford DAC's on blu-ray.

I'm disappointed but not surprised with this rerelease. It spotlights one of the weaknesses of the Vault system. Those who bought the DVD originally are disappointed because there is no real upgrade in the new edition, and those who have never bought it did not have the chance while it was out of print (not for a reasonable price at least).
I don't think it would be too hard to hire the directors and animators to do a commentary for the movie. Maltin, Lasseter, and Dejas would probably be willing to do more commentaries like the one on Sleeping Beauty. I don't know the cost/benefit numbers, but they need something other than a game to get fans to upgrade.

That really isn't what I expected you to type, I thought I was going to have to debate with you on this, but it was very mature of you to acknowledge my opinion.singerguy04 wrote:No, i'm sorry. that wasn't what i was getting at. yeah, there is a reason why this is the only site i write on haha.
I just also wanna say that I like to defend things that are often being attacked (like this release). I just hate when people accuse something I love as being unjust or mean or whatever it's been called. I mean sure it's a jerk move, but there is no doubt in my mind that this release is just to gain a extra buck or two while we're in the transition into blu-ray. It sucks, but maybe in a few years we'll get Oliver & Company the way it should be released but on Blu-ray. Until we see one of the DAC's on blu-ray and it sucks i'm going to maintain the hope that blu-ray will actually deliver releases we want. Afterall it's be kind of a waste for the company to release any film on blu-ray without a good restoration and a bunch of bonus features since we all know each disc holds up to 5 times the amount of a normal DVD.
you just gotta have faith lol.

Sadly, it's too late now, disneyboy. I don't take nominated/solicited quotes.disneyboy20022 wrote:I nominate the quote above to be Escapay's Wist #37Jack Skellington wrote:

(Yes, there was a unique case where it seems like a nominated quote was WIST'ed, but that's because I was already considering it before it was nominated, and the nomination itself was WISTable too)

LOL Escapay, I didn't get what WIST standed for, but I do now and I don't think I deserve a nomination although that was a really nice thing to say Disneyboy
, if there's anyone who should be getting a WIST nomination it would probably be Prudence or Julian Carter, they are so sassy and funny at the same time, lol !
But to be perfectly honest Scaps...I'm kind of against the WTF part though.
Everyone seems to be making fun of Ariel's prince, I think he's one of the most polite members in this forum, a lot of people make fun of him for his error and grammar mistakes which had always bothered me coz most people are ignoring one significant fact which is that there are about 7000 languages spoken today other than English
, his first language is obviously Hebrew so people pls give him some credit. And who are we to label people to be unintelligent just because they have different opinions ?
Yep, I know I'm off topic but I really wanted to get a chance to say it.

major off-topic post:
about ariel'sprince: I admire his dedication and enthusiasm and often informative posts but sometimes it just comes off as being stubborn in regards to undertaking other's opinions.
about WIST: still can't figure out what it stands for
about the DVD: so there will be a restoration? That may be enough to buy it, as for a movie which wasn't particularly significant in the Disney canon, I don't want to sit through a doco which struggles to be interesting and basically repeats standard animation techniques. Still a great movie though
