Should Snow White be Re-Dubbed?

Post by Disney Duster »

I just wanted to say I watched some of the film last night and I think another good reason for not re-dubbing Snow White would be that, well, the new voices just wouldn't fit!

First off, in animation, they record the voice first and then animate, so they are really animating what the original voice actor does. Foreign langauge dubs are never able to exactly match, because they'll be speaking a different langauge altogether.

Secondly, Snow White's voice is her character. The film was made in 1937, which is admittedly a whole decade after the 20's, but she still looks like a flapper with her short, boyish, black, bobbed-haircut and her younger, boyish, and yes, flatter body type. I'm getting some of this from Wikipedia but apparently flappers were very promiscuous and very feminist and wore bodices that flattened their breasts. Snow White's flat, just admit it. It's more because she's supposed to be a young child, but... ANYWAY, her voice was chosen because she was supposed to be a young child, but it's more than that.

The film feels old, you can just feel it's not from our time, it's merely come through time to still be enjoyed today. I don't know if "timeless" is supposed to mean it can be enjoyed any time or it feels it could have been made in any time, but I'd pick the former because you can just tell it's not made in our time. And Snow White's voice fits that. She sounds and acts like my grandmother when she chuckles or says "Oooohh!", and there would be no point in any new voice actress today trying to sound like a less shrill version of her clearly older style of voice inflections and mannerisms, etc. The only reason to do that would be for someone to sound like her for a sequel, but then that's trying to match her exactly. What this argument is about is updating her voice. But the point is, only updating her voice, but not the rest of the movie, would just be a mis-match. She wouldn't sound like she looks or like the whole rest of the film looks.
