Walt Disney Company stroke of marketing genius!
Those clever folk at the Walt Disney Company are doing this because they know that kids ( and a lot of adults like me for example !! ) when they first see a new product they want it right NOW !!
Having seen the exquisite Hi Defintion quality of Snow White from the trailers on Pinocchio and Bolt and other subsequent DVD/Blu Ray releases Disney fans in particular, and movie lovers of classic movie titles generally , will be intrigued to see just how good the movie looks after it's Hi Def makeover!
So in the first week of October , when parents and their kids are out cruising the shopping malls for Christmas gifts , and they see the newly re-released Blu Ray disc of the beloved animated motion picture classic Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs they'll get kids asking their parents "Why can't we have a Blu Ray player now Mommy ?" !!!! Result : a huge increase in sales of Blu Ray players

I agree. I hate every part of that. They make the majority of consumers wait in an attempt to try to push the format. That's genius.Chernabog_Rocks wrote:I think it's silly to have the gap between Blu-Ray and DVD. Just release them both on the same day, what's so confusing about a Blu-Ray version that comes with a dvd and the standard dvd version? I'm blonde and even I can figure out the difference between the two
Attempts at humour aside..like I said just put them both out on the same day. As someone who buys dvd only I think it's a bit unfair to have to wait longer to get my dvd just because they want to release Blu-Ray first.
I really don't see why they're doing this
*Prepares for flames and rebuttles*

I'm not going to magically buy a Blu-ray player now because of the date. I'm sure most parents aren't going to do the same thing. Seeing as the second date is still before Christmas, it's just as easy to wait. Plus the price will deter them from it. They do have other gifts to buy and many are working with a budget.
@Deco King: I'm sure most buy Christmas gifts the first week October.

Well, I can't speak for Australia, but something like HSM3 is avaialble in the UK on Blu-ray for less than £14, and indeed, at that price is still in a 3-for-2 offer, meaning if you can buy 3 such titles, they're in effect only £9.32 each (Amazon is selling the HSM3 DVD for £12.98!).

Even Pinocchio without a special promotion is only £14.98 on Blu-ray - only £1 more than Amazon are selling the DVD (£13.98) - and you get the DVD with it!
There should be bargains on Blu-ray if you look around hard enough.
As for the split release dates, yes, it's lame. But have you guys remembered this?
When DVD first came out, it was the only way to get first-release films to own, without paying a premium for a VHS release priced for Rental stores. DVDs were often available to buy before their VHS counterparts were at a "price to own" price.

http://www.digitallyobsessed.com/showarticle.php3?ID=2On the one hand, the rental pricing model is nothing new to us cinemaphiles, who until DVD came along, were always waiting months for new releases at sell-through.

I'm not really planning on double-dipping on SW, but the quote from the article mentions new bonus features being on the Blu-ray...does that mean that the DVD will have no new bonus features (compared to the 2001 DVD, I mean)?
I hope that somehow, the gap will blow up in Disney's faces. No offense to those who buy Blu-ray, but I hope that the Blu-ray only sales aren't as high as Disney would hope...maybe the DVD sales won't even be as good as they hope. Let's say that people see advertisements for the Blu-ray release date. Some people either will not bother going to the store since they don't buy Blu-ray discs (I mean, having the bonus DVD in there will help some), or some people will go to the store, thinking that the DVD will be available, and then just walk out of the store since they don't have any DVDs on the shelf. Some people might get confused when the DVD comes out, since they would've seen advertisements a couple months before for the Blu-ray and get confused...it could happen. I'm not being very clear...my nose is all stuffy, and that's my excuse.
But, yeah...I am interested in reading about the bonus features (both for Blu-ray and DVD, even though I'm not really planning on double-dipping), and I'm definitely not getting the Blu-ray at all, no matter what the bonus features are, unless the most awesome bonus features are on Disc 1, which they won't be.

And many people will buy the blu-ray by accident, and come home and find out it doesn't play on their dvd player.blackcauldron85 wrote: some people will go to the store, thinking that the DVD will be available, and then just walk out of the store since they don't have any DVDs on the shelf. So many regular people are unaware of the fact that dvd's can be played on Blu-ray players but not the other way around.
But the people think, "Hey, if this Blu-ray Snowwhite is the only thing available, it must work on my dvd player, right"? Why else are there no dvd's available? That's what will happen.
Of course all the stores will get angry customers back and after a while the employees will be instructed to tell the customers that this is a trick from Disney, and tell every customer that buys one of the discs how it works and doesn't work.
Disney should be careful for their reputation.
The Blu Ray comes WITH a DVD and people really aren't that stupid espically since there is a sticker on the front that says the Blu Ray doesn't play on DVD players.
My mom even knows what Blu Ray is and she is the least tech person ever I was laughing when we were in Blockbuster and she said are you going to get that in Hi Def.
Man the bitter people without Blu Ray are giong to love this annoucemet!

And while I'm not defending Disney as such, you're all forgetting when DVD was launched, new films were available to buy on the format long before VHS (where they were stuck in VHS Rental pricing for at least 6 months).

This isn't VHS to DVD. Can we quit comparing it to such? We're not going to see a repeat of that for reasons already discussed in other threads.2099net wrote:And while I'm not defending Disney as such, you're all forgetting when DVD was launched, new films were available to buy on the format long before VHS (where they were stuck in VHS Rental pricing for at least 6 months).

I don't like the separate release dates, but I would be happier with this scenario:
Why doesn't Disney just offer the complete dvd version (including the second disc of bonus features) with the Blu-Ray version instead of including only the first disc of the dvd? That way they would satisfy everyone's needs with one release, they would encourage sales of Blu-Ray discs and players, and they would make more money for the company at the same time. They could still offer the standard dvd version (without Blu-Ray) at a later date and at a lower cost.

Why not? This is still a jump to another, better format. While VHS to DVD was much more practical, similar basic principles are being applied.The_Iceflash wrote:This isn't VHS to DVD. You said it CampbellzSoup, I'm very dissappointed in this announcement, such a rotten trick from Disney *tisk tisk tisk* shame on you Disney Home Entertainment. Of course I'm gettin screwed over again with this release like I was with S.Beauty's Platinum, deciding to keep/sell the old in favor of the new release....CampbellzSoup wrote: Man the bitter people without Blu Ray are giong to love this annoucemet!
