I think there have been people who have had problems with many of those.

Personally, it's the same way I feel when I see a straight actor playing a gay character: Like there aren't plenty of gay actors trying to find work, and they go and give the role to one of the million straight actors who can find work easily.

Am I the only one who is agreeing with her? I think that if your character is culturally different, you should do your damndest to get an accurate voice. That's why I appreciate Pocahontas; even if some of the settlers weren't British, at the very least the native Americans were voiced BY native Americans.

I am sure there are hundreds of capable Japanase-American (voice) actors looking for jobs beyond typecasts. Supposedly Hiro is mixed race, but it's still a bit unfortunate if the rumors are true. (About as unfortunate as making the setting a conglomerate between American and Japanese cultures, when the latter is more than unique to make interesting locales.)
It's *acting*--and *voice* acting, at that. Should gay actors be disallowed from playing heterosexual roles, too?
Eddie Murphy and Harvey Fierstein aren't Chinese. Nathan Lane, Jeremy Irons, Whoopi Goldberg, Cheech Marin, Matthew Broderick--not African. I'm sure Jerry Orbach had fun with the accent, but he isn't French (and nor are Robbie Benson, David Ogden Stiers, or Angela Lansbury). Dick Van Dyke isn't British. I don't understand the concern at all.

I noticed in general that people will complain about Disney for whatever reason.

Hopefully I didn't come across as complaining ...

It's not a "red-button" issue for me, but I am aware of what other's feel about it. And I like it when people feel happy, is all. Though when it comes to the Disney fandom perhaps I am too idealistic. :P

I'm not sure how it works with Disney, but it seems the voice-cast varies with the movies. In Aladdin, Hunchback and Emperor's New Groove the voice-actors were white (in contrast to their voiced characters). Meanwhile in Atlantis, Princess and the Frog and Pocahontas all the voice-actors fit their characters' actual nationality.

I'm not sure if it's something collective or it varies with the different movies and different directors.

I do want a genuine Japanese (or at the most, Japanese-American, considering the movie's setting) voice cast for this film, though.

Everything with BH6 is going according to plan! The teaser has been met with praise & dislike, fanart of Hiro & Baymax has exploded, people are now aware of this film when they're was NOTHING mentioned for months. Plus it still only May, we haven't seen what the other characters will look/act like, voice cast has not been officially announced yet, plus we haven't even seen what the overall scope of the film will look like. It's gonna be a great next couple months going into this summer. Disney has ALL summer to continue to build up interest & so far they've started sucessfully :)

Lol? How does a straight actor gets more easily work than a gay actor? That's rubbish. You get work in that business because of your talent, luck, connections and not because of your sexuality. If straight actors could only play straight roles and gay actors gay roles, that would be discrimination and not how it's now!

Really? How often do gay actors get cast in "straight" roles then? I doubt straight actors get comments like "you're too straight to play this (gay) character" like gay actors will in the reverse. You're ridiculous if you think sexuality never plays any part in entertainment.

Jonathan Groff is gay, but that didn't stop him from being cast as Kristoff.

Neil Patrick Harris and Jane Lynch also have had several roles. A few cases don't change the point.

Derek Jacobi. Ian McKellen. Nathan Lane. John Gielgud. Even Harvey Fierstein has played straight roles.

What *is* the point? Because there's nothing but speculation and supposition to suggest this is a real-world problem.

The point is that it is perfectly valid for people to find them casting a white person in an Asian role offensive. They don't need your permission to feel that way, or your agreement that it is a "real-world problem" for it to be so. :) I know it's the in thing to be retroactive, but I couldn't care less if you agree with me, so save the Disney crusader act for someone who cares.

Yeah, people get offended by all kinds of stuff. I get offended by people with opinions that aren't grounded in reality, myself.

Probably because I didn't think someone could be ridiculous over my first post at the top, but I completely underestimated the members here. :P

Good one. You got me. It's times like when I'm talking to you that I remember this is just a forum, not a newscast or even a blog. It's like someone who treats The View as seriously as The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Jeez, move along already.

Is this a serious issue? You can't be serious. It's a voice role, it's not like they are taking a white actor to play a japanese guy and then you can obviously tell the guy isn't asian. It's the voice that matters.
Should all blond animated characters be voiced by blond actresses, then?
Prince Naveen - a black african character - was voiced by a Brazilian white guy. I didn't see any comments. This fuzz about any characteristics of the person playing any role in an animation except the voice are all completely unnecessary.

Considering the casting on movies like Lilo & Stitch, Mulan and Pocahontas, it wouldn't surprise me if Disney made an effort to cast a couple of Asian-American actors in the movie.

Though it is true this sort of controversy only seems to happen with Disney's animated projects. Nobody complained about Mako and Dante Basco being the only Asian voice actors in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Though the live-action movie was a different matter, since you could actually see the actors in the roles not to mention the strange decision to have the main heroes played by white actors and the entirety of the Fire Nation (the villains) played by Indian actors.

I'm just not going to base my gut feeling of Big Hero 6 on the teaser trailer. Why?

1) It's a teaser trailer

2) There are four other main characters that would effect the narrative. The whole movie is not going to be about Hiro trying to fit his robot brother into armour.
