Just got back from the movie theater and saw Halloween 2 (2009).

Last year I saw the original one from 1978 and then its sequel from 1981. I was not a huge fan of the first one shockingly enough (I love horror movies), but I loved the second one. A few months later I decided to buy the 2007 remake on DVD and I watched it and absolutely hated it. I have since traded in the 2007 remake, but a few weeks ago I decided I would give the second remake a try because I loved the original sequel better than the original first one. I'm glad I did, I really liked it and though it was much better than the first. I may have to re-buy the first one just to give it a second chance.

Microcosmos

Show, not tell is what this lovely movie about insects and other tiny creatures living in the grass is about. See snails making love, a ladybug 'bombarded' by raindrops, a dung beetle trying to get his dung ball of a thorn, two stag beetles (?) fighting a duel. Set to different pieces of music.

The hanging garden

Confusing story about young homosexual man returning to his parent's home for his sister's wedding. All through the movie you get images of his former self as kid taking care of the flowers in the garden, as a fat teenager trying to make love to a boy (the same guy who whould later marry his sister; when the brother returns he is thin again). There is a grandmother with dementia, a kid 'sister' (really his daughter) called Violet who is very boyish, an unhappy mother who disappears (what happens to her remains unclear) and a father who drinks himself unconsious at the wedding.

The most bizarre thing in this story is that you see how the fat teenager hangs himself in the garden and it seems everybody sees him hanging there (hey wait, hadn't he left home and become thinner? how could he have killed himself and be alive? How could a body hang all this time in the garden without rotting?) Maybe it's some psychological image? Of course we don't need to be spoon-fed what such things mean and have to try to find this out ourselves, but I just thought it was... well, irritating.

Across the Universe - Rewatched this since The Beatles are getting a lot of press lately since of Rock Band. It's a very good movie. Great for Beatles fans.

Well, take this with a big grain of salt, but the most recent news is that Neve's "in negotiations". Here's hoping they bring her back! :)

- The X-Files: I Want to Believe - I honestly don't know what to think of this movie. I watched the show religiously and I always preferred Monster-of-the-Week to the Mytharc episodes, so I thought this movie would fare better with me. It starts off good, then it sinks, then it gets better again, and so on. It's really slow at times (it definitely could have used some trimming) and not until the (very creepy) ending you see why it's even an X-Files movie. The post-credits scene is sort of bittersweet, because it leaves little to no doubt that this is the last time we see Mulder and Scully. Damn it, I want the 2012 invasion movie!

- Disney Princess Enchanted Tales: Follow Your Dreams - I admit, I giggled - but in all the wrong parts. There's a large amount of unintentional humor in Aurora's segment, that I'm not certain creators didn't put it there on purpose. Or maybe I just have a dirty mind. Anyway, I'm not the biggest fan of Aurora and Sleeping Beauty in general, but this whole segment felt like a nightmare: the story and characters' actions seemed more suitable for a fourth Swan Princess movie than a SB continuation. Jasmine's story was actually pretty good and the songs were nice. Bonus points for Magic Carpet getting his old design back.

- The Mist - I don't want to reveal anything, so I'll just say: recommended.

Well, I didn't just watch it, but I am about to watch: Batman & Robin (97')

B&R is totally terrible, but I'm having sort of a Batman Movie Marathon from Batman(89') up til the amazing Dark Knight(08').

I watched part of Pulp Fiction Sunday night. It's an interesting movie, though it is a bit talky.

Exactly! Tarantino seeks to annoy his audience, which is why I love him!

Yep, he can actually write dialogue, unlike most other screenwriters.

Becoming Jane:
Anne Hathaway stars as a young Jane Austen, whose romance with a penniless law student forms the catalyst for her to pen "Pride & Prejudice". The romance between Austen and LeFroy has never been officially proven or disproven by historians; what's in the film is a gorgeous romantic period romp of how the events might have played out. Anne Hathaway is lovely as Jane--and pulls off the British accent quite well.

I saw Up for the 3rd time last night. At the second-run theater, all movies on Tuesdays are $1. The screen was fuzzy throughout part of it, and it even stopped at one point- I'm glad I had already seen it! I saw it with Rachael (Enchantress here) and her bf and her friend! It's not even out in England yet, so it was great that they could see it!

We have one of those theaters in my hometown! Aren't they the greatest? Except for the whole fuzzy screen thing, of course...but I've never had that problem. :P

I don't go to that theater often (I just don't go to the movies often, period), but you can't beat the prices- it used to be $2 for movies, then they raised it to $2.50, but there's been a sign out front for a while now saying that all movies on Tuesdays are $1. :)

I decided to watch Princess Mononoke today since I had to stay home from work sick. I thought it had great animation and a good story, although it was a bit long (and a bit violent too).

I also watched Earth last night. It was a pretty good documentary even though some of it was just segments from the show Planet Earth.

You must have gone to Colonial Promenade. The Picture Show at Altamonte is a much nicer (and cheaper) dollar theater in the Orlando area. It's $1.25 before 6:00pm, $1.75 after 6:00pm, and it's $0.75 all day on Tuesdays. They have much better presentations of their films - better prints, fewer defects on the film, etc. Heck, they even have an auditorium with Digtial DTS sound, which is amazing considering most dollar flicks don't even have surround sound.

Saw Point Break on TV a few nights back. I've heard about it for years and never saw it, and then I learned that Kathryn Bigelow directed it (she made this summer's phenomenal The Hurt Locker), so I gave it a watch. It was a dopey fun action movie, with lots of over the top violence, well filmed action and very well done surfing sequences. Fun flick. The best part is it has now heightened my enjoyment and appreciation of Hot Fuzz. ;)

Yup, that's the one. It's still cheaper for me to go to Colonial, since the theater is about 2 minutes from my house. But it's nice to know about the Altamonte one- thanks! :)

I have one of those theaters in my town, but I'd rather see a movie sooner than cheaper.

Anyway, Son of the Mask was on TBS last night/this morning. I can say that it was really cute, and it didn't even try to be too related to the original, which is a plus when a new cast is involved. Not the best sequel, but definitely adequate.

Yeah, I go to the second run theater less than I go to the regular theater. I wouldn't have seen Up for a third time had I not been with friends who hadn't yet seen it. If I really am excited for a movie, then I tend to see it the day, or weekend, when it first comes out. But the second run theaters are nice for people who a) are patient and care more about saving money than seeing a film right when it comes out, b) a cheaper way than even renting a film (except renting from the library), or c) are just bored and want some cheap entertainment.
