Re: Aladdin Coming to Broadway!
Gregg Barnes's lovely costumes in Aladdin are nothing compared to the brillant and expensive costume work he did on Follies when it was revived in 2011, those costumes were spectacular and a wonder to behold!

Same exact thought here! I hope that we get either a program book or Broadway book of the show that has larger prints of the costume designs, so we could pull them out and frame them.MeerkatKombat wrote:

Well, actually, the good news is that it sounds like James Iglehart MIGHT be a lock for the Tony AND the Outer Circle!TsWade2 wrote:Not bad!But I don't think it could win.

I'll still hope for Aladdin win a Tony for Best Musical.disneyprincess11 wrote:Well, actually, the good news is that it sounds like James Iglehart MIGHT be a lock for the Tony AND the Outer Circle!TsWade2 wrote:Not bad!But I don't think it could win.
I think it'll also at least get Best Costumes and Best Choreography at the Tonys. So, it'll at least get 2-3!

Re: Aladdin Coming to Broadway!
Actually, even though those lyrics from "A Whole New World" do sound less like realistic speech, I find them lovely, telling a character they will show them a very wonderful world that that character badly wants to see, which is very romantic, and that she should let herself choose what she wants to choose. I don't get how it is telling us how to feel. "Shining, shimmering, splendid...let your heart decide" and "There's something about her...you don't know why but you're dyin' to try" sound similar in telling us what to feel or what the characters are feeling. But you are dead-on about the red-letter argument.ProfessorRatigan wrote:Yeah, sorry, but I've always thought A Whole New World sucked. It's got a pretty melody, I guess, but even comparing JUST the melodies, Kiss the Girl and Beauty and the Beast are easily better tunes. Tim Rice, I've always felt, is an atrocious lyricist. To go from Ashman's brilliance to Rice's hackery is...well, I can't call it 'palatable.' Just LOOK at the lyrics, separated from the melody:Disney Duster wrote: Why did this reviewer say that, and you agree? I thought "A Whole New World" was considered the best song from the whole film.
"I can show you the world
Shining, shimmering, splendid...
Tell me, princess, now when did
You last let your heart decide?"
...I'm going to stop there before I puke. Now, compare them to Ashman lyrics:
"There you see her, sitting there across the way.
She don't got a lot to say, but there's something about her...
And you don't know why, but you're dyin' to try,
Ya wanna kiss the girl..."
See the difference? Ashman READS like everday speech being sung, even divorced of the melody. If you read those lines, it'd sound RIGHT, even without the music. Read the above Rice lyrics aloud. Notice how...clunky and foreign they sound?
It also annoys me that, in the song, Rice uses phrases like, "every moment Red Letter," which is a CATHOLIC expression, referring to Red Letter Days. Why the hell is our supposedly Muslim leading lady using Catholic jargon? It's just sloppy, sloppy, sloppy all around. Tim Rice tells you what to feel. Ashman tells you what the characters are feeling. And that's a major difference.
Out of the performances recently posted from those talk shows, "Prince Ali" is okay but I thought "Arabian Nights" was amazingly good!
It's a joke, as in "these people are the bad guys, the ones we don't like, so we're calling them ugly, lol."thelittleursula wrote:The Arabian Nights one was pretty cool, but when introducing the villian as " the ugly villains " like everybody ugly is evil or something ?
yeeeeeahhhh, not sure how to feel about that.

I expected Aladdin to also earn a nomination for Best Scenic Design or Best Costume Design.

I'll have to keep an eye on the Tonys. I haven't been following this since it's not gonna be playing in my area for a few years.

Re: Aladdin Coming to Broadway!
I'm VERY surprised it didn't get a nomination for best Costume Design.
I thought that would be one of the for-sure nominations... but I guess the Tony nominations are never a sure thing!
The other 5 nominations are great, though! There's a lot of tough competition this year!

Re: Aladdin Coming to Broadway!
I admit I don't follow the Tony awards that closely, but is five nominations really a bad thing?
I don't know what the competition is, so I wonder if it has a chance to win in any of the categories.

Listening to most often lately:
Taylor Swift ~ ~ "The Fate of Ophelia"
Taylor Swift ~ "Eldest Daughter"
Taylor Swift ~ "CANCELLED!"

Re: Aladdin Coming to Broadway!
It's not bad at all, especially considering there were shows which were passed over entirely! Even one nomination is really impressive. I am still very surprised it didn't get the Costume Design nomination, though. I think it really deserved the nomination, even if Twelfth Night is the current favorite to win because of all the historical work done with the costuming.Disney's Divinity wrote:I admit I don't follow the Tony awards that closely, but is five nominations really a bad thing?I don't know what the competition is, so I wonder if it has a chance to win in any of the categories.
I think it's hard to predict right now what will win! Especially since there are lots of actors that could influence the outcome, like awards before the Tonys, etc. If I had to predict right now, though... I think it is definitely the forerunner for Best Choreography, Best Score, and Best Featured Actor.

Re: Aladdin Coming to Broadway!
I think it'd be wonderful to honor Howard Ashman for the Tony. Heck, if the voters can stupidly choose Cyndi Lauper's pop score over Tim Minchin's brilliant, beautiful score for Matilda, just because she'd be the first, single female winner for that Tony, they can totally choose to honor Ashman and his work with this. But, it sounds like Bridges has this in the bag. And it looks like Bullets' flashy 1920s style can beat Aladdin for Choreography. I think the only serious contender is James M. Iglehart for his performance, who is actually expected to win this. The biggest competition he has is Joshua Henry from Violet.rubyslippers wrote:I think it is definitely the forerunner for Best Choreography, Best Score, and Best Featured Actor.

With all this shows success, I hope Disney revisits Mermaid sooner rather than later
How is it doing comparatively to Mermaid as well, money / tickets - wise?
And big time congrats to everyone for the Tony nominations!
