Alice in Wonderland (Live-Action)
Yeah somethin like that, cause I can see him being abit tipsy bout his "True" moral and such even though most adaptions shows the cat bein a trickester of sorts, I wan'na care for these characters and realate to 'em.
That's one of the reasons why I enjoy movies, the characters have a connection with the audience, you felt for Snow White when she died, you felt the magic of Peter Pan, sensed the adventure in Lion King

i'm honestly not all that thrilled with the trailer. the white rabbit and the cheshire cat look awful. the cgi could have been done much better. not to mention the cheshire cat looks way too cute. the queen's head is too large and looks very fake. way too much johnny depp in the trailer. i mean it's alice in wonderland not "the mad hatter". I also don't think that the trailer showcased it to be a tim burton movie. and now that i see johnny i'm not all that ecstatic about his costume or make-up as i thought i would be according to the posters.

Re: Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland
Okay, I've seen one shot of the Chesire Cat and one shot of the Red Queen. How can you possibly judge the CG of the entire movie off of that? It doesn't even come out until a year, so it's probably early footage too.Disney Duster wrote:Mason, you don't know anything about the cat's personality at all from the trailer!
OK, so...it looks marvelous, wonderful, and feels creepy mystery cool. LOVE the music, especially when she drinks the bottle, wow.
BUT...the CGI...ehhh. The Red Queen's head indeed is a bit too big for me, and looks fake, almost unfinished. The Chesire cat as well.
When will they learn. Wait, wait until CGI gets could enough to look real or actually like it's in the film on the same level as the real objects.
Or use puppets and animatronics, like that 1999 version.
Look at this video of the 1999 version. Look at the puppets of the animals. Or if they're CGI, they're brilliant. They look real and like they're actually in the film.

I have to say it looks absolutely brilliant. Depp's accent sounded very good too. I can't tell anything else about the other aspects because those were hardly featured in the teaser.

Agreed! it looks better than I thought! That shot we have of the red Queen flinging the doors open took my breath away! And now it's been removed.~RapunzelTower~ wrote:THE OFFICIAL TEASER TRAILER IS HERE!! Damn, it looks EPIC!

I did get to see it a few times before it was taken down, however, and have gotta say that I'm getting more and more excited for this film. I like the sets; they're realistic enough, but completely fantastical and imaginary at the same time. It's still a shame that the Queen of Hearts is called the Red Queen, though.

The teaser's spreading like wildfire on YouTube, so Disney's efforts at taking it down aren't accomplishing much.
Anyhow, my overly detailed thoughts:
* I find it very refreshing that the real world is gorgeous and vibrant. I was expecting Burton to paint it in a very dull, somber light in order to further distinguish it from Wonderland (think of the outside-the-factory-portions of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or 95% of Sweeney Todd).
* The rabbit hole is stunning, and dare I say terrifying. It's one thing for Alice to float down with objects around here. It's another thing for her to be falling at a normal speed horizontally inside of such a narrow hole, no doubt running into all of the objects floating in midair. Very unique and very scary.
* I love the sort of dreary Victorian look of the hallway. The checkered, spiralling floor's been done before (in the 1999 NBC movie), but it's still neat regardless. The shrinking looks more innovative that I would've expected. It's done very smoothly and subtly so that it doesn't really feel like an effect; it feels natural.
* Our first look at the Dodo, walking behind Alice and the Tweedles. Hard to make him out clearly, but blue's a nice color diversion.
* I love that they implemented chess pieces into the White Queen's palace. It really does seem like this will be a war between chess pieces and playing cards. The distinction isn't made in the script, but the art direction makes it clear. It certainly makes the choices done with the Red Queen's costume seem more logical.
* Does the Cheshire Cat look fake? Yes. Do I care? No. Why? Because I like his design, and I still stand by my opinion that you can get away with more cartoonish CG in a story like this. It lends itself better to a feeling of a moving storybook. See Ella Enchanted or, better yet, P.J. Hogan's Peter Pan for further examples of this.
* I'm not so sure I like the design of the Knave of Hearts. It seems at odds with the rest of the costume design, especially the Red Queen's. Perhaps he'll have a costume change at the palace where he looks more Knave-like.
* I actually think people are being too harsh about the Red Queen's head. I think it looks about as realistic as you can expect an enlarged head to get. Of course it's going to look unnatural, but something tells me the audience will grow accustomed to it after a minute or two.
* The Bandersnatch is nothing like what I imagined, but it's interesting. The color scheme of it is certainly symbolic, based on what's in the script, but I won't spoil how.
* It's hard to get a look at the Jubjub Bird while in motion blur, but it pretty much just looks like a vulture, which is fine with me.
* The palace interior's gorgeous. It manages to take warm colors and give them a cold feeling. A nice touch is how the floor is at odds with the rest of the room (it's done in a black and white checkerboard style). Very indicative of how the Red Queen took over what was once the White Queen's.
* I'm not so sure why the Hatter is so large in comparison to the tea table, but the design and color scheme is nice, especially the lovely dusk background. The March Hare's home is very reminiscent of a rabbit's burrow, and while I wouldn't have minded it, it's nice not to have bunny ears on it for once.
* I absolutely love love love the Mad Hatter's voice. If I hadn't been spoiled by someone's description of the trailer, I would never have known that was Depp talking until the big reveal. I don't think I've ever heard him use a voice like this one before. It's more posh sounding than his previous British accents, and more softly spoken. I wonder who/what he based it off this time.
* I already liked the Hatter's design from the get-go, but it definitely works best under proper color timing, sitting somewhere in between the character banner and Vanity Fair photo.
* My comments about the Cheshire Cat apply to the White Rabbit. He's not photorealistic, but he reminds me of an illustration brought to life. Why can't the CG characters be as stylized as the settings? I think it would be more jarring to have realistic characters in a surreal world.
* The Red Queen's fitting room is lovely, especially the windows. Extras and crew members present at filming had said there's a scene where the Hatter attempts in vain to fashion a hat that can compliment the Red Queen's large head. There's no such scene in the script (heck, I can't even think of a logical place to fit in), but the trailer ending seems to be from that scene.
So overall, I'm even more excited for this film than I already was (hard to imagine, huh?). I love the combination of boldly saturated colors with the darker, more chromatic lighting. It makes Wonderland feel like a place that's whimsical and fantastical, but with a forboding undercurrent to it.
I honestly wasn't expecting a teaser until the D23 expo at the earliest. The fact that we're getting character banners and a teaser trailer 8-9 months before release (9 months for the posters, 8 for this trailer) shows that Disney really has high expectations for the film. I wasn't expecting much from their marketing, and figured this'd be given the same low-key approach that other features like Race to Witch Mountain got. Instead, they're really marketing this as an event. The only times they've gone this far were with Pirates of the Caribbean and The Chronicles of Narnia. I don't expect Alice to do nearly as well as those, but I do hope it's a hit both critically and financially. Only time will tell.

yeah do that ^^. there are like 20 of them to choose from.Disneykid wrote:It's still on YouTube thanks to all the people who keep reposting it. Just do a search for Alice in Wonderland and sort the results so that they start with the newest added. Then enjoy.
so the more i watch it the more i like it. i really love the beginning, the falling through the rabbit whole and the shrinking. i think seeing it all in HD will definitely make me like it more. my one complaint about the trailer still is the fact that they are promoting this as a mad hatter movie and now alice. i mean i'm sure it's for the teaser trailer and to create buzz that johnny depp is in it but still. it is ALICE in Wonderland.

Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland
Kubrick, I hope you are right that the reason it does not look so good is because it is not finalized.
The Red Queen's head looked okay in her character poster...but not here.
Disneykid, I want stylized characters like you, too.
What I am talking about is the CGI itself.
In other words, I wouldn't mind really unrealistic designs. But I want realistic rendering, making it look like it's physically in with the other characters, like the hatter or the knave.
Like...here's an example of unrealistic looking characters that look realistic in CGI, at this site:
http://pixeloo.blogspot.com/2008/04/jes ... ooned.html
That said, I wonder if the colors are slightly dark and murky because, well, not just because it's supposed to be dark and dangerous, especially since the Red Queen has taken over, but also because it is underground. Alice's adventures underground. Down the rabbit hole.
Mary Blair also made some very gray and dark colors for some Wonderland concept art, because it was underground!

After looking around I finally found the trailer and thought it looked awesome! The Chesire Cat, however, scares me a bit
, much more so than Helena Bohman Carter's CG enhanced giant noggin
. Can't wait to see Johnny Depp as Mad Hatter. So far he looks more refined but keeps the fruitiness of the Disney version.

Re: Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland
But you're still basing your opinions on a couple of seconds of footage. That Jessica Rabbit image looks fine (albeit a bit too creepy), but is not feasible at all if you have to do 24 frames a second. Or have no schedule to keep at all. And I also don't understand is how simply enlarging somebody's head can be unrealistic.Disney Duster wrote:Kubrick, I hope you are right that the reason it does not look so good is because it is not finalized.

Love the trailer! There's so much to look at! I feel like, even if the movie isn't good (which i doubt), I'll still be entertained by the vast amount of things to look at!
There seems to be a lot of complaining about the CGI. The only thing that bothered me at all was the Knave of Hearts. He appeared to be like a human, but seemed like he came right out of Beowulf. They should have done Glover like Depp, just dress him up! The Cheshire cat looks great to me! Sure I don't think it looks real, but how could I? No matter how realistic the rendering is, it's always going to look fake because it's a cat with an enormous human-like grin! The Queen's head actually looks better than I imagined, won't bother me at all.
Very excited for this!

If anyone wanted to know, the song that plays during the introduction to the Mad Hatter in the trailer is from "Lemony Snicket's a Series of Unfortunate Events."
I think it's an interesting choice because 'Unfortuante Events', a Thomas Newman scored film, used Danny Elfman music in its ads.
Now, 'Alice', a Danny Elfman scored film, is using Thomas Newman music in its ad.
But way too much Depp! I think they are hoping to sell the whole film on him alone. That worries me.
