Today, when I looked at Best Buy's weekly circular, I noticed they have a few Disney titles on sale for $12.99, including Lilo and Stitch and Lilo and Stitch 2. Perhaps this is another Disney film that is silently being put into the Disney vault.

If I'm not mistaken, Brother Bear and Brother Bear 2 were also on sale for that same price. Maybe these titles will, too, slip silently into the Disney Vault. Though, I don't see why since BB got an excellent 2-Disc set and would be pointless to get rid of it.

You are correct. Dumbo: Big Top Edition was also listed with those titles.

Well Cinderella has been Vaulted for who knows how long. Does anyone know what other films are going into the vault this year? i hear tail of Alice in Wonderland, Aladdin, and The Little Mermade, but I don't know what truth is in any of it.

But, to answer your question, this year Disney has vaulted "Cinderella", "Aladdin", "The Sword in the Stone", and "Alice in Wonderland".

I'm hoping that will be the case. I don't yet own the film and I have been holding out for a while now in hopes of a new release. It was supposed to receive a 2-disc Special Edition a couple years back, if I'm not mistaken, and the idea apparently got scrapped. Now, whether we'll actually get a 2-disc edition this time around is debatable, since we haven't gotten a 2-disc non-Platinum release in quite some time, but I'm hoping for a good, updated release soon.

Sorry to double post...

When I was at my local "Best Buy" today, I noticed that along with "Dumbo", "Lilo and Stitch", and "Brother Bear", they also had "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", "The Rescuers", and "The Rescuers Down Under" on sale for $14.99 as well. Normally, I wouldn't think much of this, but since Disney has opted to release so many of their Disney Animated Classics this year, it makes me wonder if perhaps they are up to something. Perhaps we will see new releases of these films next year. Again, it's just speculation, but at the same time, none of these films have received an update in a while, and over the last 5 years or so, Disney has given most of the other animated classics an update. Perhaps Disney will continue the trend next year and give us updated versions of these animated classics.

The reason why Brother Bear 1 & 2, Dumbo, & Lilo and Stitch 1 & 2 are on sale everywhere is because they are on temporary price reduction.

Also The Emperor's New Groove is on sale at Wal-Mart along with the 5 mentioned above.

No disscussion on Toy Story 1 & 2 going back into the vault?

Is this something Disney did? I thought the Gold Classics Collection was vaulted years ago, and now it's available? (The ones that are still for sale seem to be the ones never re-released, like Hercules or Pete's Dragon. Stuff like Alice In Wonderland, The Fox and the Hound, etc. are still in the vault)

Most of the gold collection titles are still in print, The gold collections were a faliure so disney stoped producing NEW titles for the line. Read below for more info.....

After the failure of the Limited Issue line, Disney devised the Gold Classic Collection as a new plan for DVD releases. These would basically contain the same few number of extras, but would be released permanently, as there was no limit to the time window in which they would printed. Generally, these Gold Collection DVDs would be marked by features like interactive read-along, games, and sing alongs. The majority of Disney's catalogue of Animated Classics were released as these Gold Collection DVDs with a few extras and at a retail price of $29.99. (Many of the DVDs have since undergone price reductions to $19.99 retail price.) Three of the Limited Issue titles--Mulan, Hercules, and Pinocchio--were repackaged with the Limited Issue discs in new Gold Collection cases.

Future Gold Collection titles were released on one particular day each month. However, the "Gold Collection" name and line were not as successful as Disney had hoped and the studio decided to discontinue the line. As a result, when Dumbo was released Fall 2001 on DVD, it was billed as a "60th Anniversary Edition", rather than Gold Collection, and the disc was packed with extras, including an audio commentary. In addition, the original story about Gold Collection titles being available indefinitely also turned untrue, as at the end of January 2002, the Gold Collection DVDs for Pinocchio and Mulan went out of print.

Although Disney discontinued the "Gold Collection" name in 2001, they did not stop the Gold Collection-type releases altogether, though their newer non-specified "Gold Collection"-like DVDs featured a bit more supplemental content. The 2002 DVD releases for both The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Oliver & Company were both NOT "old Collection" DVDs. While practically identical in design, Hunchback was simply labeled as "The Original Animated Classic" and Oliver was given the same "Special Edition" name as the Peter Pan re-release. The May 2003 release of The Rescuers was also much like a "Gold Collection" release in everything but name, as it was given no designation.

The Gold Classics as a WHOLE has yet to go out of print. BUT all the ones that ARE in print are ones that do not have a SE comming soon (that we know of).

That's why I'm considering buying The Sword In the Stone while I still can. I really want to avoid the tilt-and-scan SE...

But interesting, I woulda sworn that most of those showed as not available on Amazon for a while... so even to this day, Disney is releasing Gold Classic Collections among their Platinum Editions? Are these the ONLY series of Disney DVDs that aren't scheduled to go in the vault?

This would, however, explain an interesting phenomena I noticed when checking many of these titles out of the library. The older ones (most likely purchased right away when they were released) had a shiny gold banner where it said Gold Classics Collection, the kind that looked funny if you tried to scan or photocopy it. The discs had a rough surface, when you put your hand on it.

Some other ones, however, had a light yellow GCC banner instead of gold, and had smooth disc labels, as if there was some sort of polish on it.

Are the yellow ones the new cheaper versions? I should do a test and get four or five copies of one movie (from different libraries) and see if there are discrepancies.

I haven't been bying much dvds lately that i want to get due to lack of money so i am worried about the next "back to the vault" wave. Do we have any info on which dvds or blu-rays will go into the vault and when?

There can't be much to go into the vault. Disney'd have to release stuff in order to put it in the vault.

Well I think given the fact over the period of the next 2 years Toy Story and Toy Story 2 will appear in Disney Digital 3-D Theaters I suppose they (Disney/Pixar) didn't want people to buy it...instead they want to get everyone to see them in Disney Digital 3-D then re-release a Toy Story Trilogy on by 2011 on Blu Ray and DVD-lacking any of the good features the current discs have on them.... and a free coupon to see Cars 2....
