I guess it depends on the medium what you like in digital format or the "real" format.
With music and videos, it doesn't matter with me. But with comics and manga, I do prefer traditional paper format to read from, rather than from a kindle, or ipad or computer.

The thing that makes me weary of only watching movies via handheld devices and phones is the fact that it will be take forever to build up my collection of films that way. I have a fairly large collection of DVDs and Blu-Rays, and if I decided to switch to only buying movies for handheld devices, I would have to buy all my favourite movies all over again.
I also worry that it could make my tangible collection of movies worthless. It's different with music because I never used CDs, so there wasn't a physical collection there to replace.

Here are my thoughts on the whole physical vs. digital debacle...
The way I see it, 100% digital distribution of every media format will NOT happen right away. I predict that it might take another 10 or 20 years for that to happen because too many companies and consumers still rely on physical devices. But it will happen sooner or later, especially when you consider that these physical mediums use up natural resources and people are trying to conserve nature in some way, shape or form.
In my case, though, I see the logic behind the two camps. I personally like to collect and have stuff in my hands, especially things that are very well made, like collector's editions. But I also like the idea of being able to log off to a site, rent a movie and watch it right away. Really people are romanticizing both sides of the argument like it is a life saver when its really a choice. If you want something physical, fine. If you want it digital, fine. Either way you still get what you wanted and that's what matters.

Frankenollie, the issue of buying movies again is a very legitimate gripe. I agree. It's seems many people are hoping for a service like iTunes match that movie studios could offer, giving you a digital copy of any movie you already own on a different format. It seems All Access could be that star of this kind of service.

You are forgetting one other thing about the benefit and joy of owning it.enigmawing wrote:To me, the main advantage of "owning" media is to be able to enjoy it any time you want. Film, tapes, or discs were they only options we had to bring this material home until recently.
And that's owning it in and of itself.

Swillie, I like that picture of your collection, but it reminds me of that sad fate the world might eventually have. We can't touch and hold and look through our beloved sentimental items anymore. We can only stare at fake versions of them on a screen.
Online streaming or downloads is fine as an option. But as a replacement, it will only mean more and more things will become replaced by it. Our world will become fake and digital. Movie and music stores will disappear...

Hmm, it seems to me there is a whole different discussion going on right now, that has little to do with Lady and The Tramp IMO.
I've asked several times for any kind of proof the DVD only edition has been cancelled, but none was given.
As of yesterday (or the day before), Amazon.com has put up a date for its release, March 20. Up until then, they had the 'not available for purchase, be notified' crap.
So, I'm inclined to still believe it will be released.

I guess I should clarify that when I say things like "take over" or "replace"... I don't literally mean wipe out all other options in existence. I'm just saying that it will become the mainstream, most popular option. Like how how iTunes has "taken over" the music industry. Obviously CDs still get released, it's just that digital music is the most popular option.Disney Duster wrote:Online streaming or downloads is fine as an option. So in the same sense, when I say that digital distribution will undoubtedly "take over" physical DVDs and blu-rays... I don't pretend to claim that I know how long physical media will be around as an option. I hope it remains one just like you do. But it will undoubtedly "take over" as the most popular option in society.
And Khonnor - I would guess that if Amazon has just posted a date, it will probably still be released. I think no one answered your earlier questions simply because no one DID have any official confirmation that it had been cancelled.

If it's only going to take over as much as iTunes and Youtube have now...then okay. That sounds alright.
Though I think everyone will buy their most favorite movies on physical discs. I would think they'd do that for their most favorite albums, too.
Oh, but there is one more advantage of physical media over online streaming! You can keep your physical disc with the restoration, ratio, and bonus features that you love. BUT if you only watch the online versions they provide you, they would change it every time they release the film, so you'd never get to see the old versions with the things you liked better/also liked! And if you could keep the old versions in the chest, might they somehow automatically change your old versions to the new versions, as "automatically updating them"? If they did, once again it wouldn't be smart for Disney, because the smartest thing would be to get people to buy as many versions as possible, spending more money.

After expressing my avid enthusiasm toward digital media, perhaps I should make it clear I'm not actually against hard copies.
I mean, we obviously don't know much of anything yet about All Access but I've been under the impression that it will be meant to compliment our building collections. Of course there's advantages to both hard copies and digital. But I think I did say that I personally don't believe hard copies will be going away anytime soon; as it's been mentioned in this thread, we do still have CD's, even records available alongside MP3's. Heck, studios stopped releasing material on VHS years ago but we can still buy new VCR's to play our old collections on. And DVD's still continue to be produced along with Blu-ray, and Blu-ray players are backwards-compatible with DVD.
Ideally, All Access would allow us to insert our existing discs and/or use an included code (like DMR) to unlock the digital versions from a personal account, as well as give us an option to buy (or even rent) the digital material without the hard copy from a home page if we so choose. It would be awesome if they intend to tie it with our existing DMR accounts to allow us access to the films that we've already redeemed the codes for (similar to how redeeming certain codes unlocks an online copy of the films). And if we're lucky, maybe the ease of the digital format would provide Disney incentive to release material they haven't felt the need to bother with due to low sales expectations.
Personally, I only see myself wanting to own certain films in the physical format, which would be just a fraction of what I currently have on disc (I've been meaning to clean out my collection for ages now). I'd be all for super-ultra-awesome-collector's-editions, and for digital only for my lesser favorites. I still have plenty to have and to hold when it comes to other areas in my life.

I personally am collecting all the films on Blu Ray now to satisify my compulsion of needing a physical copy. However, I wouldn't mind having all my collection of films right there so I can select them and play right away.
Their's a certain charm having something tangable, however the convience factor of having it instantly makes sense to me.

Was there any official statement from Disney, or was it pure speculation that the DVD was cancelled?

Haha....I'm ashamed to admit it, but I just want it because it has different artwork...I already own the Platinum (twice) and the UK Diamond Blu Ray and DVD.Lnds500 wrote:You 're not serious are you? I just now saw your response to me! Yeh, I really hope it will still be released. Can't really imagine it won't. We'll see, have it pre-ordered though.SWillie! wrote:And Khonnor - I would guess that if Amazon has just posted a date, it will probably still be released. Check it out!
Disney's official live-action Lady and the Tramp spaghetti scene!
Personally, I agree with the guy that it's weird and disturbing. They could have gotten a dogs that really like spaghetti or liked to pass things with their nose or were, I dunno, trained...but whatever. The sparkles in fake Lady's eyes is just cringe-worthingly wrong to me. But it's cool they tried it at all...I guess...
WAIT! I forgot. Here's a much better attempt from a long time ago...with a much more awesome song if I do say so myself (I'm a bitch!):
Old Disney live-action dogs in love with spaghetti scene commercial

You just mean the drawing, right? Because at least the composition is kinda good in being less bare than the Diamond.SWillie! wrote:GODDDD take it away. So ugly.
No you're not, I'm going to get more than that to have all Cinderella artworks I can! Well maybe we're both a little pathetic lol. Is Lady and the Tramp one of your favorites? You'd only be pathetic if you did this for just any/every Disney title!Khonnor wrote:Haha....I'm ashamed to admit it, but I just want it because it has different artwork...I already own the Platinum (twice) and the UK Diamond Blu Ray and DVD.
