For real, each princess is a reflection of society's expectations of women at that time. They are the ideal image of beauty and grace for the era and they don't act bolder than how society would expect them to. There isn't anything wrong with that. It doesn't make the past Princesses any less appealing. My personal favorites are Ariel and Cinderella and it has nothing to do with the fact that they do or don't save the day. This is really a silly argument. All I said was the reason that some parents object to the Disney Princess franchise. Those weren't even my opinions. This doesn't need to be debated and your posts are belittling and borderline rude. You are talking down to me and I don't appreciate it.

Snow White: Diamond Edition

I did not do the things you said I was doing, in fact I could say what you are doing is, well, what you said I was, but I won't say that. But of course I don't want to do those things to you. Also, you expressed those opinions very much like you agreed with them since, after all, you didn't say you disagreed. When you say something like "I didn't mean to imply" and then follow with some statements, I take it you are making those statements.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: Diamond Edition (Blu-ray Review)

By : John Latchem | Posted: 24 Aug 2009

During its production, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs had been known as “Disney’s Folly” in the industry press. But Walt Disney (and his financiers) had faith that it would work. Upon its release in 1937, the film was hailed as a masterpiece.

On Blu-ray, the film has probably never looked or sounded this good. The “Diamond Edition” presentation has restored the film’s original RKO opening and end title sequences (which had been missing since the 1950s and were only included as an extra in the 2001 “Platinum Edition” DVD release). If there are any imperfections in the high-def master, they are only a by-product of the animation techniques being more than 70 years old. The film employs one of the brightest, cheeriest color palates ever committed to celluloid.

In fact, several speakers on the new disc make the bold claim that success of Snow White as bright colorful family entertainment inspired MGM to greenlight The Wizard of Oz (and changed the film industry and life as we know it forever, etc.).

But the extras elevate this “Diamond Edition” to a virtual Disney museum in a box.

The process of creating Snow White, the first full-length animated feature in American cinematic history, isn’t too dissimilar from what Pixar animators went through more than 50 years later to produce CG-animated films. Disney animators created a number of short cartoons used to experiment with and perfect techniques that would be needed to construct a feature-length cartoon. Many of these short films are included with the Blu-ray: 1928’s Steamboat Willie (sound), 1932’s Flowers and Trees (color), 1934’s The Goddess of Spring (human character animation), 1934’s Playful Pluto (personality animation) and 1937’s The Old Mill (multiplane camera).

The bulk of behind-the-scenes material is presented through a virtual tour of Hyperion Studios, the original Disney animation facility where Snow White was made. (Disney would build a new studio in Burbank with the profits from the movie.) An index of the available material is available for those who don’t have the patience to let the menus load.

The disc also includes an interesting archive find: Snow White Returns, an unproduced short that serves as a sequel to the film, designed to make use of unused sequences from the movie.

Most of the 2001 extras have made their way to the “Diamond Edition.” The most notable omission is the 2001 retrospective making-of featurette, which has been replaced by a new documentary more similar in tone to those found on other recent Disney DVDs.

The primary holdover from 2001, Disney Through the Decades, starts with the notion that Snow White gave rise to the Disney empire, and traces the influence the film has had on the studio over the years. A new intro and an updated 21st century segment are included.

The Blu-ray itself is hosted by a wisecracking Slave in the Mirror, who discusses the weather and makes recommendations to the viewer. Viewers can get more of the mirror with the Mirror, Mirror on the Wall Disney Princess personality profile quiz.

Other games include the addictive Jewel Jumble, a Tetris knockoff; What Do You See?, a photo recognition game; and the puzzle-solver Dopey’s Wild Mine Ride, a holdover from 2001.

Another neat activity is the “Scene Stealer,” which uses BD Live to let users upload a photo that is inserted into the movie as a dwarf.

The Blu-ray also includes a music video of Disney Channel starlet Tiffany Thornton singing a pop version of “Some Day My Prince Will Come.” While Disney’s continued inclusion of these musical updates is annoying, this version is certainly more tolerable than Barbra Streisand’s throaty rendition from the 2001 DVD (which thankfully is not included here).

Saying "I could say that" is basically saying it.
But of course I don't want to do those things to you. Also, you expressed those opinions very much like you agreed with them since, after all, you didn't say you disagreed. When you say something like "I didn't mean to imply" and then follow with some statements, I take it you are making those statements.
Let's analyze. What I originally said was:
The main complaint that I hear from parents about the Disney Princess franchise is that it gives their daughters the impression that things like beauty and what you wear are very important and that as long as you find a man, your life will be perfect. This is something Disney has tried to move away from with films like Pocahontas, Mulan, and Enchanted in which the heroine is strong, stands up for herself, and saves the day. None of those films end in instant marriage either. It will be interesting to see how parents react when these toys hit store shelves next month.
From that post, which I clearly stated was what I heard, you found a reason to argue. You wrote:
The previous heroines were strong and stood up for themselves, too! Did Snow White make it through the forest on her own, yes or no? Did she think to ask the animals where to live, yes or no? Did she seem to take charge of the dwarfs and the cottage, yes or no? Did Cinderella say "well, why not?" when her stepfamily made fun of her going to the ball, yes or no? It's all YES.

The whole tone of your post is "I'm right, you're wrong and I'm going to put you in your place." Nothing about it was polite or friendly. Your points are valid. The previous princesses aren't weak characters. It's the way you said it all.

My response to you was in no way rude, nor did I talk down to you. I was polite even when you were snooty. Here is what I said:
I should have been more clear. I didn't mean to imply that the previous princesses weren't strong characters. The main difference between the six main princesses (Snow White through Jasmine) and the more recent ones (Pocahontas, Mulan, Giselle) are that the most recent three save the day rather than waiting for their Prince to do it. Pocahontas jumps in front of John Smith at his execution. Mulan saves China. Giselle ultimately defeats Narissa. This is something that they changed for the Broadway version of The Little Mermaid. Instead of Eric defeating Ursula, Ariel does it. That's what I meant when I said the heroines in those films are strong. They are a reflection of the "girl power" movement of the mid-late 90's and are more reflective of modern society's view of women being equal to men.

And from there, you decided there was more to comment on. Your response:
Actually if you noticed, Giselle only stabs Narissa, it is really Pip, a male chipmunk, who defeats Narissa by making her fall to her death from the tower. Giselle just saves Robert, much like Ariel saved Eric. Oops. And Cinderella defeated Lady Tremaine with the other slipper. Oops. I guess those pre-90's girls are just a little to powerful and strong, huh?

Oops! I guess phrasing things like that is just a little rude and belittling, huh?

This is the third in a string of conversations in which I have been more than polite and have been treated very rudely. I've been participating in this forum since 2003 and I've had a lot of fun here and made some good friends, but I am taking a break. I'll still lurk and I'll probably PM some of you from time to time to say hi or let you know how much I enjoyed your post, but I am hesitant to continue actively participating in this forum. This isn't goodbye forever, but I am in no hurry to return after incidents like these. This is merely the final straw and I'm not leaving just because of this. I just don't see much point in making posts when they are routinely attacked. The funny thing is that in all cases, it's merely been me saying "I understand the argument" without even putting my personal opinions into it.

I'm gonna miss you, goofystitch! Who else will share enthusiasm for bonus features, wax nostalgic about the College Program, or give us insider info from D23?

Please reconsider your decision to leave. It gets better, it always does. I know it seems like lately UD is just a place for arguments and general nastiness (*salute* General Nastiness *end salute*), but there are many good things about the community too.

Remember what Mrs. Banks said in Enchanted...

"Everybody has problems. Everybody has bad times. Do we sacrifice all of the good times because of them?"

Still, I can understand why you'd want to take a break. I take one every month - be it a few days or a few weeks - simply because sometimes I just need to deal with my life without the hassle of the UD community. If you stay away long, come back sooner, and if you stay away for just a little bit, always remember we're waiting for you with arms open and slipcovers burning.

LOL, I was thinking about that when I posted the other Mrs. Banks quote!

Might as well post that quote now since we've got two Mrs. Bankses here...

"<strike>Katie Nanna</strike> goofystitch, please reconsider. Think of the children. Think of Mr. Banks. He was just beginning to get used to you."

Please don't leave goofystitch.....

Because even outside the online community its not perfect either....

Although in recognition of this....the old phrase be careful what you say or how you say it is somewhat hard to dedeuce when reading online....

I've learned that typing anywhere online can be taken out of context or mis interrerted.....because unless UD Forums have a webcam we don't know what each other is thinking or doing or trying to interpret what they are typing.....I mean you can't tell the tone of people's voice as its being typed...and maybe Disney Duster didn't mean to for it to be read as in a harsh sarcastic tone....they could have done that so that sticks out to everyone...

All in all I would say or type....we all must be careful what we type even more than what we say because someone who typed something may send 2 differ meanings to a person and percieve either as being sarcasticly mad or sarcastically silly.....So just what I try to do...think before you say and then even more think before you type even more than what you would say sometimes what you type can be more dangerous because of the person reading the message...espcially on any forum....so what I try to do is if it looks like I wouldn't be any help at all by adding my two cents if it were similair in real life I overly think that when posting on forums or publicly online....because not only can forum members see it but any one else can too....and be offended by it when there is nothing to be offended about...

I think what Escapay said is valid....take a little vacation off of UD goofystitch and then update us on your D23 Expo Experience because I am sure all of the forum members look forward to see how you enjoyed it and the reports.....I will look forward to it..and will hope you return to the forums with that report of an experince of a lifetime :D

I know there's been disagreements here (and if anything I said in the SOTS thread made you feel sad, then I'm sorry- I never meant to attack you!!!) lately. A lot of us just are passionate about our ideas and aren't always sensitive to others' opinions.

I agree with the others- if you do take a break, please come back to visit (or to stay!). You're such a valuable member here, and I always enjoy reading your posts. Even when I don't agree with them. I kid, I kid. Sort of. :p

I'd hate to see you leave so soon, after you've been so active. But if you feel that you must, I understand. It gets heated in here, often. I just wanted to let you know that reading your recent posts have been a pleasure and a joy, and I hope sometime you might come back, so we can hear more from you. :)

Disney Duster Misreading

Post by Disney Duster »

Thank you disneyboy.

Like he said goofystitch, it seems you, as others, have read my posts not how I intended.

After what you said to me, I really didn't want to say this, but I actually like you on here and actually wish you would stay. I mean, did you miss when I said "But of course I don't want to do those things to you"?

I do passionately point out reasons for things. I point out the reasons it is, say, wrong that a character is weak, and the reasons it is right a character is strong.

And maybe I try to do it not just passionately, but humorously. But I guess my having fun can get taken as making fun?

Isn't okay for me to say that something someone says is wrong, and why? I'm not attacking a person, I'm attacking, or disproving, statements.

Defense of the things and characters I love.

It sounds like we'll be getting a worthwhile upgrade! I know not all the features will be HD, but it'd be nice if Dopey's Wild Mine Ride was(and Widescreen too!). Considering it's also on the DVD, it would probably be labeled "virtual ride", like previous "rides" have been.

More clips are now up on Amazon.com from the Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs Blu Ray see hyperlink it looks like it's going to be a really packed Blu Ray : http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... im/dvdtalk

Is there any review of the event somewhere ( in Hollywood?? ) where there was a screening of the newly remastered footage of Snow White?

It seems strange with such an excellent Snow White website that the only clip thus far available is the Trailer considering that there are now about 6 or 7 on the Amazon Snow White listing what do other forum readers/ posters think?
