I agree with TSoD about Kurt singing in the high register, it'd be nice to get some more variety from him :)

As for the character, I don't like him for both reasons Divinity mentioned. He's a jerk, which generally turns me away from a character (there are exceptions) and because he comes off as such a stereotype.

So how come no one's saying that Finn needs to try some variety and sing female songs or that some of the girls needs to sing some more male songs?

Case in point.

Uh, they are in Never Been Kissed. The girls are singing a mash-up of Start Me Up by The Rolling Stones and Livin' On A Prayer by Bon Jovi. The guys are singing a mash-up of Stop! In The Name Of Love by The Supremes and Free Your Mind by En Vogue.

Excluding Kurt's songs, since pretty much all his songs except "Mr. Cellophane" and "Pink Houses" were originally sung by women, here's all the "Glee" songs in which the character singing is the opposite sex of the original or best-known singer:

"I'll Stand By You":
Original Singer: The Pretenders (Chrissie Hynde, lead vocals)
Glee: Finn

"Imagine":
Original Singer: John Lennon
Glee: New Directions (primarily Mercedes)

"Gives You Hell"
Original Singer: All-American Rejects
Glee: Rachel

"Borderline" / "Open Your Heart" Mash-Up
Original Singer: Madonna
Glee: Rachel & Finn

"Like a Virgin"
Original Singer: Madonna
Glee: Rachel & Jesse, Finn & Santana, Will & Emma

"What It Feels Like for a Girl"
Original Singer: Madonna
Glee: New Directions Boys

"Burning Up" (deleted from episode, but on iTunes)
Original Singer: Madonna
Glee: Jesse

"Dream a Little Dream of Me"
Best-Known Singer: "Mama" Cass Elliot
Glee: Artie
(This is the only case where it's Best-Known Singer, I doubt everyone is aware that Ozzie Nelson first sang it)

"It's a Man's Man's Man's World"
Original Singer: James Brown
Glee: Quinn

"Over the Rainbow"
Original Singer: Judy Garland
Glee: Will & Puck
(Technically, their rendition is based on Israel Kamakawiwoʻole's and not Garland's)

"Stronger"
Original Singer: Britney Spears
Glee: Artie

"Toxic"
Original Singer: Britney Spears
Glee: Will & New Directions

"Bridge over Troubled Water"
Original Singer: Simon & Garfunkel
Glee: Mercedes

"Sweet Transvestite"
Original Singer: Tim Curry
Glee: Mercedes

Thanks Disney's Divinity for trying to answer some of my questions. Nobody else did. : (

My point about Kurt is still made, as no one has still asked for the other characters to sing more songs from other sexes.

From Escapay's post:

Finn - 5 (including "What It Feels Like For A Girl" and "Toxic")
Mercedes - 3
Rachel - 2 (including "Imagine")
Jesse - 2
Will - 3
Quinn - 2 (including "Imagine")
Artie - 4 (including "What it Feels Like For A Girl" and "Toxic")
Puck - 2 (including "What it Feels Like For A Girl")

Since it's clear Kurt personally identifies more with women, I think his two male songs fit well next to these numbers. Finn's the only one that really stands out here, but I'm guessing that's only because his voice is so high. Also, I haven't seen Victor/Victoria, but Kurt was dressed up as half man, half woman in "Le Jazz Hot," so...?

I don't think that it's wrong for a gay guy to feel more comfortable singing women's songs, especially if he's into musicals (where, let's be honest, women get most of the songs with flair or intensity anyway). I don't think the show means to come across as, "Hey, this is how all gay guys are like!" Even so, hopefully new characters coming out--I mean, up--might offer a wider range to gay people who might not identify with Kurt.

Actually, it's really funny, because there was an episode all about this, with Kurt singing "Pink Houses", a guy's song, to be more manly.

And then, everyone tells him:

"That just didn't sound like you."

I guess people in here just don't want him to be, well, like himself

Uh, that's not true Duster. Even though I actually enjoyed Pink Houses, it's totally not his character. And I understand that he loves singing in the higher part of his range, but it does get kind of annoying when almost all of the parts he sings are in his higher register. I get that he likes singing up that high, but why can't he switch it up a bit? Personally, I think he sounds much better when he sings in his lower register. I didn't particularly care for Rose's Turn, A House Is Not A Home or Defying Gravity, all songs in the higher part of his register. But I did like the Happy mash-up and Pink Houses. Obviously, they aren't going to change him (since they kind of already did that), but I would like to see him not sing so high. Yeah, that's his character and that won't change, but he is multi-faceted and he doesn't always have to sing so high. That's just my personal preference, though. I would actually like to see a lot of characters sing different song styles, but they should essentially stay within the part of their register that sounds most appealing. Of course, Ryan Murphy can't make everyone happy, and he is doing much better with the song selections this season, but I would like him to change it up a bit. It'll keep us on our toes and we might learn to like something we wouldn't expect to.

I have a feeling you really are missing the idea the characters are like real people who are a certain way and want to sing certain songs that fit them, not just what everyone else thinks sounds good/everyone else wants to hear.

However, if you are just saying that you wish you could hear him and the others sing other songs and styles and registers, not that they should, then that is fine, and I would probably like that, too, as long as it wasn't at the expense of whatever they want to sing.

I don't really think I'm missing the point, but, yes, I would like to see all of the characters sing something different that is unexpected.

But anyway, this clip has made me infinitely more excited for tomorrow's episode:

Oh my god, people. The best episode ever. (It also seemed to strangely go along with the current discussion; even Artie’s “But that wouldn‘t be very different for you, would it?”)

I was completely shocked by the football thing. Of course, in afterthought, it seems very cliché, but I was shocked at the time. (And he and Kurt would actually look better than Kurt and Criss or Kurt and Overstreet, imo)

I’ve loved Beiste since the premiere of the season, and this episode was no different. Glad to see her get more screen time. Also glad to see them give Rachel and Finn a break for some of the other characters, like Puck and Artie. Love Puck's scene in the office.

As far as the mash-ups go, I know a lot of people thought the boys were best last time, but I loved the girls’ “Halo/Walking On Sunshine.” This time, the boys won, hands down.

This episode was definitely interesting, but it wasn't the best for me. I'm still really tired that practically all of Kurt's storylines have to deal with him being gay. He's gay, we get it. But anyway, I especially loved Artie, Puck and Bieste in this episode. The guy's mash-up was "charming" but I definitely loved the girl's mash-up more. Both of them are great, but I like rocker girls more than the "charming" guys. One Love (People Get Ready) was decent, but kind of boring and I hate Teenage Dream, so that was no good for me. I still like The Rocky Horror Glee Show and Duets the best out of the season so far.

Can't wait for the songs next week (there are only four of them again, well, techincally there are five, but we're getting another mash-up, so). I hope Gwenyth can sing. She probably won't be able to SING, but I hope she can sing.

Wow, we have really opposite taste in the music. I loved the boys, and "Teenage Dream," but could take or leave the other songs. And I've loved nearly all the episodes besides the Britney and Rocky Horror episodes.

Anyway, this season's just bringing the tears out of me for some reason. When Kurt admitted that was his first kiss...<3 :(

About Paltrow...I'm really not looking forward to her, but the promos make me hopeful that at least she won't be too annoying.

That's okay. Different tastes give spark to everyday life (does that sound preachy or what?). I just hope that Gwenyth doesn't mess up the songs she sings in (which are 3 out of the 4 songs sung in the episode). I'm kind of skepitcal, but I've heard she can sing, but I hope she doesn't butcher the songs.

Actually Gwenyth's new movie requires her to sing and she actually sounds decent enough. Hopefully she can do even better without the country tone. The soundtrack is on iTunes, and it's called Country Strong.

Thanks PPf! I just listened to some of it and she actually has a decent voice. It's not amazing, but she definitely can sing. I feel much better now :D

I just didn't want her to mess up Nowadays/Hot Honey Rag because that is one of my favorites from Chicago.

Gwyneth Paltrow also sang in the movie Duets. I remember the year it came out, the only thing we ever heard on the radio was "Cruisin' ", sung by her and Huey Lewis.

As for the episode, I missed a couple scenes here and there whilst making dinner, but overall I liked it. I'm going to have to check out "A Very Potter Musical" now to see Darren Criss' earlier work.
