A box set costs more than a standard DVD, but they 'absorb' the postage costs on those. I still think it's a rip-off, and they have a cheek to charge extra for something that's free.2099net wrote:Well, Play normally absorb the postage costs. But the DVD and the DVD with the book both have the same SRP and most sites are offering them at the same price.
As far as I know Billy, its a story book. You can also get a twin pack with the book, but it confusingly calls this a 2 disc set, when it should be 3

Joined by their loyal pals Launchpad McQuack, Gyro Gearloose, Mrs. Beakley and Webby Vanderquack, the DuckTales gang never fails to deliver a wealth of adventure. Includes all 61 episodes from the first season.

We probably will be getting The Aristocats but as it hasn't been announced for here yet.
We never got a 2-Disc Pinocchio, it was a 1-disc Special Edition.
The Robin Hood Special Edition will be 1-disc.
If the Dumbo Special Edition is indeed 2-disc though, that will be in our favour, as well as the fact that the re-release of Tarzan here was a 2-disc (US got 1-disc), and we also got the Lilo and Stitch 2-Disc Special Edition.
However the US got a 2-Disc Alice in Wonderland Masterpiece Edition while we only got a 1-Disc Special Edition, with none of the substancial features (One Hour in Wonderland) and just the fluff that stuck it together.

not sure if it warrants a 2-disc but I despretely hope so

There's not enough content for Dumbo to be 2 discs. Its only a short film in the first place.
I suspect the 2 disc boxset listed on Choices will turnout to be the Dumbo/Robin Hood set.

Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database
they have that listed seperatly:2099net wrote:There's not enough content for Dumbo to be 2 discs. Its only a short film in the first place.

maybe since it's not out until May the BBFC will rate more content in time, some features for Peter Pan were just passed in January
Well it wont be the first time they've released 2 "special editions" on the same date, i think Alice & Wonderland and Dumbo were both released on the same day.
It makes sense, neither Alice & Dumbo or Robin Hood & Dumbo are major disney movies like The Lion King, i guess by releasing them together they can advertise for 2 movies at once.

Well I know some people have been clamouring for information on DuckTales and Rescue Rangers and I bring news of the former.
Well unfortunately (and let's face it it's no surprise) the DVDs have the same horrible transfer the R1 DVDs have that look absolutely awful. Blurring and disappearing lines of what appears to be the handywork of DVNR is also there. However as most probably know, the UK release holds 7 less episodes than the R1 release, so instead of 9 episodes per disc, there are only 6. Even though it's the same ugly transfer, the fact that there are fewer episodes does mean less compression and therefore the picture quality is slightly better, slightlly cleaner, slightly sharper and the effects of what seems to be DVNR also seem somewhat less. I use the word 'slighty' because the compression issue on the R1 disc was not really to blame, the problem with both the R1 and UK release is simply the state the transfer used is in.
In all fairness though, even though DuckTales was made the same year as The Black Cauldron it would never look as good, because TBC is film and can be cleaed up more easily. Making an animated show in the 1980s meant there was a lot of messing around with the animation being shot on film, then transfered to video and been edited in video (or so I assume), and video just can't be restored to the same degree that film can, so it's doubtful that much could ever be much improvement.
When the R1 of Ducktales was released I was partially of the mind that the material had been DVNRed. But as I put above, I am now under the impression that the material just looks like it has been DVNRed. The reason for this is that The Gummi Bears DVD 'looked' like it had been DVNRed because of blurring and misisng lines, but when I checked the same episodes on my old 1980s Gummi Bears VHS the same faults appeared, and since the show wouldn't have been DVNRed back then, perhaps it is just inherrent faults in the material, but who knows. I suppose the DVD would need to be compared to an old VHS.
But anyone I've turned into a rant, so I'll sum up by saying that an SRP of £12.99 for these sets really is a steal. Currently on the week of release these sets are available for between £7.99 - £9.99, so I suppose for such a low price you can't grumble.
My advice would be after comparing the offerings from both regions is that I would wait for now. Considering the quality of the video and the fact the fact that in a year's time the price will have dropped to around £3.99 - £4.99. I'd leave them for now.
If however you're adamant on getting them, I'd recommend the R2 over the R1 set.
Oh and the languages on DuckTales are: English, German, Italian, Spanish and French.
