Just curious....are there any UDers who are in the closet?....and if you are is it only in public, say at work or school, or are you even in the closet from family and/or friends? Thanks!

I'm surprised it hasn't been posted, but gay marriage was recently passed in Britain. Also, gay marriage was passed in Illinois on Valentine's Day (very appropriate! :) ).

Also:

Pentagon expected to expand benefits to same-sex spouses

(CNN) -- Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta is expected to announce this week that same-sex spouses of service members will be granted some benefits that they had been denied until now, according to an Obama administration official.

Sources in the gay activist community have received indications that the announcement could come this week.

The Pentagon has been reviewing what benefits it could extend without violating the Defense of Marriage Act. Gay rights groups have been calling for the change.

Among the benefits gay rights groups say can be legally extended are housing on military bases, military ID cards to access on-base activities and programs, access to commissaries and the consideration of a same-sex spouse and family in duty assignments.

Panetta's likely replacement, former Sen. Chuck Hagel, has said he supports extending the benefits.

"I will do everything possible to the extent permissible under current law to provide equal benefits to the families of all our service members," Hagel wrote in answer to a questionnaire he completed for the Senate Armed Services Committee.

They passed parts of the legislative process, but not in their entirty (same with France recently). I figured a post would make more sense after they are signed into law.

Also this twat confuses me:

http://www.lgbtqnation.com/2013/02/indi ... a-purpose/

So gay people have no purpose in life, but God has a reason for them? DAFAQ?

Sorry about that. I read these things on another forum's LGBT discussion, and usually just post what I've read here directly. I don't read the details in news stories enough. >>

I think to many Christians, the purpose of gay people is to DIAF. They think only heterosexual people have a purpose in life, I guess.

Ender's Game author Orson Scott Card has been in the news lately, but not for good things. His involvement with DC comics has led to individuals and stores not wanting to buy or carry his work and Summit Entertainment is trying to distance themsleves from him for the upcoming release of Ender's Game, despite his producing credit and obvious involvement with the source material.

His long held anti-gay views (and not just marraige, but anything and everything to do with the existance of gay people) is what's driving the controversy and while it's easy to see why average people would object, the executives seem to be trying to have it both ways. They want to profit off his work, but not be associated with him and IMO it's obvious why you can't really do that, but they're trying anyway. At least until it hurts their bottom line enough.

But what do the rest of you think of this controversy?

Orson Scott Card is a complete idiot. He defines homophobia. The way he keeps going on and on about homosexuality implies that either A: he is a closet-case himself or B: he is genuinely scared of gays.

And I'm not surprised at Summit's behavior. Nobody saw the huge success of Twilight coming and now that they're out of Twilight books to adapt, they'll do anything to keep the cash-flow going to prevent being swallowed up by a bigger studio.

All the while I'm just wondering... is Ender's Game really considered this big anticipated release?

Progress has arrived and Orson's on the wrong side of history.

I don't feel bad at the backlash Card is receiving, but I still have bought/will buy and read most of his work anyway. I'm glad that there is a stance being taken against people who are homophobic, regardless.

Why on earth would you give your money to someone who is a notorious homophobe and actively supports anti-LGBT organizations?

I didn't know he supported any anti-gay organizations, just that he had ignorant opinions.

I suppose I could just read his books from the library rather than giving him money then. (I haven't bought anything recently, but I own a lot of his books--like the Homecoming series and collection of short stories that was autographed. I had planned to get the Ender and Seventh Son series eventually, both of which I read while in high school and loved.) It probably has a lot to do with the fact that I read the best of his works before I knew his opinions, but I separate the opinions of the author from the work itself. But if he's giving money to anti-gay organizations, that changes my opinion.

Well, he does. He's even a board member of the National Organization for Marriage.

So, considering the United States Supreme Court is now hearing oral arguments on Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), I figured now would be a good time to get this thread going again, huh? This is BIG. They'll announce their decision in July, but this has the potential to END the issue once and for all, on the State and Federal level, in the United States. Honestly, I'm surprised more people aren't making a bigger deal out of this. This is the civil rights issue of our time, and at least where I live, everybody is kind of, "Eh. So?" I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing... Good as in, well, they're not rabidly foaming at the mouth at the very prospect of equality, but bad as in, well, do they just not GIVE a shit about our rights? I really hope the court does the right thing.

Oh, and Scalia and Thomas can go fuck themselves. Or each other. Whatever. (It's funny they're so anti-gay, they're practically boyfriend and boyfriend considering the way they vote. )

In an ideal world, it would be nice if gay marriage was passed federally to end this issue once and for all. You know it's going to happen anyway in the next 25 years, let's please get it over with already.

All the protesters can go fatten their arteries at Chick-Fil-A as a statement of outrage.

I saw a neat compilation pic a while back, probably on Tumblr or Facebook, that portrayed different families of Disney characters. I remember it showed Simba growing up with two dads . . . does anyone know what I'm talking about? :) I'm trying to find it again and am having no luck.

People in the church think being Gay equals eternal damnation and should be illegal. At one point in this country, it was illegal for a Black Spouse and a White Spouse to be married. God accepts everyone, and it's hard to believe that if a person is gay, they get a one way ticket to hell unless they turn straight. So in my opinion, it should be legalized and some people who are against it, should not judge when there are other areas in their lives that need more addressing

When my mom went to Nursing School a Milena ago, a nun taught them that one should never assume, and spelled it out on the chalkboard, ASS U ME which means when one assumes, it makes an Ass out of you and me

Here's one linkfor that image. I can't find the compilation one yet, but I remember what you're talking about. I thought it was a very sweet picture.
