exactly, i thought the transfer looked disgusting compared to more recent DVD's. it could look a lot better with some more restoration effort.Luke wrote:I'd say video quality. Its transfer certainly pales in comparison to Snow White, Bambi, and even Fantasia and Pinocchio. As far as extras go, it's a pretty solid presentation, though.Lars Vermundsberget wrote:What's the problem with the "60th anniversary" Dumbo DVD?

October of next year as a anniversary release could make sence since it would also be supporting The Little Mermaid's PE release. We already have a rumored Hunchback/Stitch SE for the early platinum, so why not Dumbo? Also, by this time next year most copies would be sold out already, resulting in high demand.

2-disc Dumbo is a great idea. I have had a craving for a DVD for an actual Walt classic. The special features just excite more than the ones for current movies. While Dumbo is very, very low on my list of favorite animated classics, I'm always pleased to hear about a 2-discer. Who knows, maybe I just need to watch it again to get to like it. I didn't like Bambi when I heard of the Platinum, but after watching it again and looking at the bonus features, I really like it now.
I don't want to get this thread too off-topic, but this news did come with a second part. Treasure Planet has also gone out of print. This is what made my day; I hope this means a 2-discer. Yeah, yeah, Dumbo, sure, sure, but we're talking about TREASURE PLANET people!
I'm also hoping for better coverart. Heck, if Disney is really serious about this, they could just remove the fart joke character from the movie.

I disagree. Treasure Planet's first release was good, but if Disney really is serious about releasing this movie with 2 discs, there are many things they can improve on. The bonus features could be a little more in-depth, seeing as how many segments on production on were pretty general and vague. They could also be longer, seeing as how none of the bonus features really ran over 10-12 minutes, aside from the commentary. I can see a behind-the-microphone segment being added, since voice talent was a subject that, for some reason, Disney decided not to touch on in the previous release. The picture and audio quality don't have much room for improvement, but the extras could use a bit of fine-tuning.awallaceunc wrote:Still, I can see them re-releasing it. If they do, it will probably just be a re-issue of what's already available, spread over two discs, plus a handful of new but rather insignificant features (+ slip-cover).

We agree a bit more than you think. There's certainly room for improvement on the bonus features. I just mean that as far as single-disc Disney DVDs go, TP is pretty close to the cream of the crop- 7.5 gigs' worth. The same can be said for Dumbo too.
Disney can definitely expand by going to a 2 Disc... significantly if they choose to. I'm just wondering how much new material they would invest in... basically a case of me being skeptical of Disney and their treatment of TP (which I love, btw). Of course I'll join you in hoping for a full-to-the-max SE.

Dumbo SE on the way for 2006
From Animated News
So will it be a 2 disc or not? Will it just be a reissued version of the existing disc, as happened in Europe?
Let's hope that this means it will get a new transfer, as the current one certainly doesn't sparkle as much as it could.
Also does this mean Dumbo II is still on it's way!?
http://www.animated-news.com/A trailer included on the upcoming Funny Factory DVDs starring Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse indicates that a special edition DVD of Dumbo is coming sometime in 2006 but does not indicate whether it will be a 1-disc or 2-disc edition.

I would guess 2 disc just because the last was a 1 discer and also, I think "special edition" was used. I think most SE's out are 2 discers, if not all.ichabod wrote:

Wasn't Dumbo II shelved? I had read somewhere that the trailer for it was taken out of later printings of the 60th anniversary release.

Even though Dumbo isn't one of my favorite Disney movies, this is still great news. The only thing that worries me is that Dumbo is being advertised before Hunchback, which could mean we'll see Dumbo in the Spring and Hunchback in the Fall. Personally, I think that should be flip flopped. Hunchback's 10th anniversary is in June, so it'd make sense for it to be released in the late Spring/early Summer. Dumbo's 65th anniversary is in October, so it'd make sense for it be released in the Fall (right next to The Little Mermaid's release).

Great news! Let's really hope this is a 2-disc set in the vein of Sleeping Beauty, Pocahontas or Mulan... complete with a dazzling new transfer and enhanced home theater mix. Please deliver, Disney. This will be their first chance to prove themselves on a non-Platinum Edition animated classic release since the Tarzan/TENG blunders.
2006 is shaping up to be pretty good for Disney. We know these are coming:
Lady and the Tramp: Platinum Edition
Dumbo: 65th Anniversary Special Edition
Lilo & Stitch: Special Edition
The Little Mermaid: Platinum Edition
...and we suspect that a The Hunchback of Notre Dame: 10th Anniversary Special Edition and Song of the South: 60th Anniversary Special Edition will be coming too. The Fox and the Hound: 25th Anniversary Special Edition seems likely, too, given that its sequel is on the way. Also, given that it disappeared from Disney's database, a Treasure Planet: Special Edition could be on the way.
I'm also holding out hope for a 35th Anniversary Edition of Bedknobs and Broomsticks, though that may be pushed back to '07 now because of the remake.
And of course the following also have 5-mark anniversaries this year, but re-releases aren't likely:
Make Mine Music - 60th Anniversary
Alice in Wonderland - 55th Anniversary*
101 Dalmatians - 45th Anniversary*
The Parent Trap - 45th Anniversary*
The Great Mouse Detective - 20th Anniversary
Beauty and the Beast - 15th Anniversary*
James and the Giant Peach - 10th Anniversary
101 Dalmatians (Live Action) - 10th Anniversary
*These either already have 2-Disc Special Editions from recent years or, in the case of 101, will be coming in '07 for sure.
And maybe, just maybe, this Halloween will see Mr. Boogedy: 20th Anniversary Edition.
Unreleased TV series celebrating an anniversary of their premier season (and Disney has used anniversary marketing for TV series several times before)
Dinosaurs: 15th Anniversary
Blossom: 15th Anniversary
Darkwing Duck: 15th Anniversary
Adventures in Wonderland: 15th Anniversary
Flash Forward: 10th Anniversary
Brand Spanking New! Doug: 10th Anniversary
Quack Pack!: 10th Anniversary
Mighty Ducks: 10th Anniversary
Jungle Cubs: 10th Anniversary
Herman's Head: 10th Anniversary
The Torkelsons: 10th Anniversary
Nurses: 10th Anniversary
I'm not sure which Touchstone/Miramax films are coming up for anniversaries, but I think Disney might release 10th Anniversary Editions of Sister Act and Father of the Bride, Part II, which are celebrating their 9th and 11th anniversaries, respectively, this year.

And take in consideration the rereleases of TENG and Tarzan.
... However, since this is one of Wal Disney's originals... let's hope

YES!!! DUMBO!!! I really don't care either if it's a one disc or two. I mean I would love it to be two disc (but who knows right now). I still have the chance of picking up the 2 disc that is out now, but I am not. I heard it's a good DVD, I wouldn't care if Disney decided to take those two disc and just re-package it!!! I think we will know a lot more about this DVD when we get our hands on the Landy and the Tramp PE DVD!!
P.S. Disney don't forget to add a SLIPCOVER to this DVD!!
