D82 wrote:Yes, I guess that's the reason why they modified it, but I don't know why they cared about that on this occasion when it wasn't a problem for them to reuse artwork for the Signature Collection cover of Snow White, for example. And what they were reusing was from an international edition, so people in the US wouldn't have noticed it wasn't new.
They've reused art in every Signature title except Pinocchio, Cinderella and Peter Pan (Beauty and the Beast uses a used but modified art so I don't know if that one counts).

I like the Masterpiece VHS (that's the one I grew up with) and I'm fine with the Signature Collection. The Best Buy exclusive is great, shame they stopped doing those.

UmbrellaFish wrote:Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a great work of art and no image in that film is ever as busy or poorly composed as the Diamond Edition cover. It may showcase lots of various elements from the film (the Prince and his horse and a castle?!?), but it doesn’t really represent the film very well because it’s much uglier than anything in the movie itself.
Ok, I can see what you mean in the way of not looking so pretty. But as far as busy...the original poster was busy with every single character and that is one of Disney's best posters.

Well, speaking of the ones for Snow White; I like the ones for the VHS and Laserdisc. They were simply luminous.

Most Fantasia covers are pretty similar, especially the VHS and 60th Anniversary DVD. I prefer the background colors of the VHS but the DVD background seems better fitting for the film.

I always liked the art used for those first two covers. Simple and pristine; the VHS is the superior of the two. The Anthology has a nice cover, too. I only own the VHS and the Anthology. I need to pick up the next Blu-ray release, so I hope I like the next cover better than the first Blu-ray release's cover. I lucked up waiting to buy Cinderella and Aladdin on Blu-ray until their Signatures, too, since their covers are better this time around (the same with the DMC version of Dalmatians). I wish I could say the same about Sleeping Beauty...

With the way they are usually doing the Signature Collection (If Fantasia is ever a part of the Collection), I suppose it's going to be a similar Mickey clipart on a white background, though they do have exceptions (Peter Pan, Cinderella, Aladdin).

FUN FACT:
The evil queen artwork on the Snow white Signature edition Blu-ray is a old clip art from the Platinum edition VHS booklet.

The Fantasia Blu-ray was also released separately from Fantasia 2000 in Europe with this cover:

I like all the covers for Fantasia. The first three are simple and classy, but I think I prefer the Blu-ray ones because they feature more characters from the film and not just Mickey.

I hadn't realized so many of them reused art, they could've made a bigger effort with the covers of this line.

Nice find! Both Snow White and the queen were recycled for the cover then.

They could have made a bigger effort with the Signature Edition releases in general, not just the covers. If these releases had kept previous bonus features, added substantial new ones, and used proper restorations for films that desperately needed them (looking at you Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella), I would have been a lot more tolerant of the lackluster covers so far.

They should have commissioned the same artist to make all the covers with new artwork and be consistent with each other like The Legacy Collection.

Fantasia: my favorite is the VHS!!! So freaking classy! It seems only Pinocchio and Fantasia got these extra special Masterpiece VHS's in the early VHS days. My second favorite for Fantasia os this one, if it counts. Does it?:

That's a theatrical poster, but I don't know, maybe it has been used as a home video cover as well in some country. I really like it too. The clip art of Mickey used for the VHS and the DVD seems inspired by it.

I prefer the first one to the domestic version. I like that the characters from the two films are in separate sides of the cover. The second one is nice too.

It's curious that the German cover has the old hag on the cover instead of the queen. Maybe the queen is more popular there in that form.

Speaking of Snow White, I've discovered that the artwork on the second Spanish VHS I posted was reused from the first UK VHS (the cover on the right below), so there are at least three different covers of that release over the world:

I have the Spanish version of that edition. The cover's quite nice. I also have this one from the UK that I think hasn't been posted here:

Snow White is the classic I have more different editions of. I guess it shows it's my second favorite Disney film.

That art of the hag is awfully drawn.

That last image of the Snow White collector's version from the UK is gorgeous!

Im usually a pretty critical person (the positive and the negative)... but I have to say all the Fantasia covers are really good. Fairly minimal, well drawn... nice concepts.

On the blu ray cover, maybe the sprite (green woman)is not super well drawn... but thats pretty minor.

Oh, and I love that spanish cover of SW! The one w Snow White w her hands on her knees and the queen on top.
