Toy Story 4 received better reviews than Missing Link so this outcome was definitely unexpected. Perhaps this is an indication of sequel/remake fatigue. Missing Link was the only original among the nominees. I wonder if this upset will repeat at the Oscars.
The Hollywood Foreign Press which presents the Globes is different I believe from Academy voters. Also the Globes have already given awards to the Toy Story franchise "Best Musical/Comedy Film 1999 Toy Story 2 & Best Animated Feature 2010 Toy Story 3."
The Academy voters will pick either FII or TS4, since non have seen The Missing Link. And other than Toy Story 3, I don't think any animated sequel has won a major award.

The Golden Globes and Academy Awards are very anti sequels despite being pro Disney or Pixar.

Tell that to Toy Story 3.

Well obviously there are exceptions to the rule. Always.

I think Toy Story 4 will probably win at the Oscars.

What do you think will win? Frozen 2?

No. I think another original film from another studio.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 also won the Golden Globe, beating the likes of The LEGO Movie and Big Hero 6.

It will be interesting to see what direction the BAFTAs, Annies and Producer's Guild go in. I'm actually predicting Klaus to win at the Annies, as it appears to be a favourite among animators and animation artists (well, those I follow on Twitter, anyway). But Missing Link winning the Globe will hopefully inspire more Academy voters to give it a shot, if it gets the Oscar nomination.

Just a reminder that what wins the Golden Globe doesn't necessarily mean it will win the Academy Awards. Ex: Let it Go.

However I am glad Disney didn't win. I think 2019 Disney's films are weak and basically represent a creative bankruptcy at Disney. I don't think they deserve any award in any award ceremony and especially the Academy Awards.

I'm glad Laika won. They've been the best American animation company for a while now. I haven't seen Missing Link yet; I've been keeping an eye on its price on Amazon. I don't mind buying it sight unseen because Laika hasn't made a film I dislike yet. The Boxtrolls was the real test because I thought it looked horrible, and it ended up being my favorite Laika film. There’s much more creativity at that studio than PIXAR, modern WDAS, Blue Sky, or Dreamworks, that’s for darn sure.

I can't help but wonder if Laika's win comes from an increasing (and imo deserved) animosity towards Disney. Elton John's Best Song win also seemed surprising.

Elton John deserved it especially after he was sidelined by Disney for The Lion King.

Even the director and the producer were shocked when they picked up the award. I think Toy Story 4 is superior, but I really enjoyed Missing Link too and I'm glad Laika finally won a Golden Globe.

I feel a bit like you too. Their 2019 films don't seem worthy enough of winning an Oscar.

I agree. He got his revenge beating Disney with a song from another studio.

Not only did they look shocked but they even vocalized it in their speech that they didn't expect this at all.

I agree with you that their 2019 films don't seem as Oscar-worthy as some of their previous ones. Then again, the same could be said about Brave or Big Hero 6 or even the original Frozen which had major issues with the plot and was carried along by the characters and songs.

I hope this teaches Disney a lesson. Beyonce didn't look too happy either lol.

The BAFTA nominations are out. Klaus got nominated! It's surprising that neither Missing Link nor How to Train Your Dragon 3 made the cut. The British Academy needs to expand the animation categories to five nominees. It's ludicrous and insulting that every other category always has five nominees whereas the nominees in the animation categories keep fluctuating between three to four each year.

Really happy to see Klaus get some recognition.

By the way, for those in the Americas interested in seeing the new Shaun the Sheep Movie, it will go straight to Netflix in those territories. No release date yet, although it's supposed to be early this year, so hopefully, we hear of something soon.
