Confirmed: Mufasa, the Hyenas (The first link: “They were giving us notes about how we should adjust the look of the hyenas,” said Ms. Kanter), Timon, Pumbaa, Rafiki, Zazu, and Kiara.

I'm betting Vitani and at least, Kovu will be in it too.

So Timon and Pumbaa (*loud groaning*) are confirmed, but Simba and Nala aren't? No wonder they joked about T&P getting all the attention in that one House of Mouse episode.

Im pretty sure Simba & Nala are in it since they are Kion's parents...

glad that the hyenas will be there too, but I hope they dont change their design too much. Also it would be nice if we get a couple of good hyena characters, the stupid thug stereotype this movie has perpetuated about these very awesome predators really bugs me.

Well if Timon & Pumbaa are in, I'd probably enjoy it. They were one of my favorite things to come out of the original movie, after all.

“It’s kind of like ‘The Lion King’ meets ‘The Avengers,’” says Disney Junior general manager Nancy Kanter
... not sure whether to laugh or feel pity about that. You can't just mix Marvel stuff with Disney- oh wait, yes they did. Why not call it "The Lion Avenger" if we make the statement more accurate? ... and why no Rafiki spinoff instead?!

Yeah, that line stuck out at me too. The two franchises are not comparable that way...you think just because you (as in Disney) own them now and it's doing really well you can just use that as a buzz word to sell your new show about lions? Is Simba gonna be all "you wouldn't like me when I'm angry" and hulk out on hyenas? Will Kion suit up in a cutting edge metal suit No.

good to see a number of original characters back, especially the hyenas. wonder if shenzi and banzi had a pup and kion takes him into the team? hehe. rafiki better be kick ass like he was in the first film! never laughed so hard as when he went karate on the hyenas. lol.

I went to an animation festival this weekend and Mercury Filmworks had a booth there and they showed a scene (albeit in mute) from The Lion Guard on the screen and the animation has a smoothness and moves very reminiscently of The Lion King. So it will definitely capture the look and feel of the movie.

Was it a flash kind of animation or was it straight-up hand-drawn?

It's fake. You see a Tumblr link if you look carefully. And the drawings are not professional-looking at all

Good question. Flash is often notorious for giving characters awkward and somewhat mechanical movements when they're animated. Traditional hand-drawn animation has always had character animations that flowed more naturally.

If you're just referring to Disney's television cartoons, I would argue that the shows they had on the Disney Afternoon were more professional looking than those new Mickey Mouse shorts or something like Kick Buttowski. But like I said, this cartoon so far doesn't look as bad as either of those.

They said it wasn't Flash, but instead uses paper-less hand-drawn animation and Toon Boom to make it look as close to the original film as possible.

Well, I guess I can give them credit for that. Paul Rudish isn't even trying with Mickey Mouse.

Many flash cartoons are simply highly stylised rather than lazy.

Not every cartoon seeks to produce fluid animation - The new Mickey Mouse cartoons (which are clearly highly stylised) is one of them.

Look at the Mr Men Show, the character designs were not designed to mimic fluid animation imitating reality. They aren't realistic characters and don't move like real people. They were designed to be instantly recognisable symbols and caricatures.

'k I was fooled, though I did think it looked a bit off, like the characters were early concepts, especially the hippo.

So glad they are keeping the 2d style!!!

Ive seen some nice things with flash but that quirk it has where sections of the character seem to be gliding across the background in this smooth mechanical way bugs me. Im sure someone really skilled (& with a lot of time & manpower to experiment) can make a great looking film with a style similar to Dalmatians or Sleeping Beauty.

Will it be in the style of Mermaid, Hercules, & Aladdin TV series then ? Not the usual flat style they usually have ?
