Yes, it has happened in the past but usually only for a couple of features. This year there were more. The Weinstein Company is especially guilty of this as they rarely submit their eligible films in this category. I was more surprised that My Little Pony wasn't submitted. It has more of a chance than some of the submitted ones.

I think you already know how I feel when studios disrespect the filmmakers by not submitting their work. I'm still not over that Disney didn't submit Atlantis just to give Monsters Inc. a better chance. I'm positive that it would have been nominated instead Jimmy Neutron.

With the exception of Shaun the Sheep and maybe something else I'm forgetting, Lionsgate doesn't usually make the effort to submit the animated films they release. They probably felt My Little Pony was too niche and only appeal to Bronies, than be a potential Oscar contender. They also didn't submit Rock Dog, despite its director Ash Brannon being Oscar-nominated before.

While they have opened the nominating invitation up to the entire Academy, it's still on a volunteer basis. Somebody who doesn't care about animation probably won't even bother and they're still required to a watch 2/3rds of the eligible films.

Of the smaller films, I think The Breadwinner and Loving Vincent are the biggest likely contenders. The Breadwinner is topical, has Angelina Jolie as an executive producer and is also the film GKIDS is pushing the most out of the seven films they've submitted. Loving Vincent has done excellent business, making over $3 million so far and it hasn't even played on more than 205 screens. That tells it's appealing to more than just animation and art enthusiasts.

I also wouldn't count out The Big Bad Fox, which I hear is just as charming as Ernest & Celestine was.

I didn't know that! At that time, I didn't even know films must be submitted in order to be nominated. Wow, that's worse than what they do today; at least now Disney submits all its features. And what is worse is that Atlantis had a good chance of being nominated. Now I understand why Jimmy Neutron was among the nominees that year, it clearly took Atlantis' spot. I always thought Jimmy Neutron didn't deserve to be there. I've only watch that movie once, but I thought it was quite bad.

Coco has won the National Board of Review award for best animated feature, while Loving Vincent was one of their top 10 independent movies of the year.

It's surprising that a lot of well-reviewed indie films didn't garner any nominations such as My Entire High School Sinking into the Sea, Window Horses, Birdboy, The Girl without Hands, Ethel & Ernest, A Silent Voice etc. It's also disappointing that Menken/Slater got snubbed in the music category.

The Annies always make some odd selections in my opinion, so I'm not surprised, but it's a shame Tangled the Series wasn't nominated in the music category. And why are Tangled Before Ever After and Queen for a Day in different categories? Aren't both 1-hour special episodes?

Yes, there isn't any real difference between the two. Maybe it's because Tangled Before Ever After was branded as a Disney Channel Original Movie whereas Queen for a Day wasn't.

Coco has been nominated for two Critics' Choice Awards: best animated feature and best song (“Remember Me”). In the animation category it is competing with: The Breadwinner, Despicable Me 3, The Lego Batman Movie and Loving Vincent.

Beauty and the Beast has received four nominations: best costume design, best hair and makeup, best production design and best song (“Evermore”).

Coco won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature, surprising literally no one. The Walt Disney Company has won the Golden Globe in this category 10 out of 12 times. The only years they didn't win since the category's inception in 2006 was in 2011 with "The Adventures of Tintin" and in 2014 with "How to Train Your Dragon 2".
