Oscar for Best Animated Feature 2016
Re: Oscar for Best Animated Feature 2016
I could see Disney push for Moana to take the award as they attempt to get Zootopia to be nominated for Best Picture. If that doesn't happen, then I'm not sure which one they'll push for.

I guess the serious question is, can Zootopia be nominated for Best Picture and Best Animated Picture at the same time, or can it only be one or the other?

Re: Oscar for Best Animated Feature 2016
I could only see them pushing for Moana if they would like M&C to be Oscar winners in order to help with...what is it, branding, you'd call it, maybe? That way they could write on all the M&C films, "from Oscar winners...." And perhaps that would help Miranda look good--in addition to Best Song--since his name's apparently going to be on 90% of their product going forward. Still, I think it's a foregone conclusion that Zootopia's won, and I haven't even seen Moana.Avaitor wrote:I could see Disney push for Moana to take the award as they attempt to get Zootopia to be nominated for Best Picture. The Annie nominations are out. You can check the nominees for every category, here.
I'm surprised that Netfilx's The Little Prince and GKIDS' April and the Extraordinary World and Phantom Boy didn't get nominated in the Best Animated Feature: Independent category. I'm also surprised and perplexed that Inner Workings wasn't nominated for Best Animated Short (but Pixar's Piper was).

By the way, Kubo and the Two Strings has been named Best Animated Feature by the National Board of Review. (Source: http://deadline.com/2016/11/nationa-boa ... 201861267/)
Re: Oscar for Best Animated Feature 2016
Finding Dory, Zootopia and Moana were all nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Critics' Choice Awards. The other nominees in the category are Kubo and the Two Strings, The Red Turtle and Trolls (they have 6 slots in each category). "How Far I’ll Go" from Moana was also nominated for Best Song. I caught Your Name while I was in Japan; I thought it was pretty good and definitely Shinkai's strongest film to date. Since there are so many potential nominees this year, I think it might be an uphill battle for it to get nominated (especially considering that Funimation has never distributed an Oscar nominated film), but perhaps the hype will get it there.

Your Name won The Los Angeles Film Critics Association for Best Animated feature, which is considered one of the more prestigious local critics bodies (along with New York obviously).
That's not to say it'll win the Oscar but a nomination could happen. This year is so unpredictable. Some years they've struggled to fill this category with enough worthy nominees but there's an embarrassment of riches this year, with plenty of f both mainstream and lesser known/foreign films to choose from.

Re: Oscar for Best Animated Feature 2016
I was just going to pop in to mention this as well. Every animated film that has won the LAFCA has at least been nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar (except for Waltz with Bashir which was nominated in the Foreign-Language category), so I'd say this bodes well for its chances. Based on how well Zootopia was received, I'm surprised at that result though. It didn't even get Runner-up, as The Red Turtle took that honor.Lady Cluck wrote:Your Name won The Los Angeles Film Critics Association for Best Animated feature, which is considered one of the more prestigious local critics bodies (along with New York obviously).

Yep, definitely a very competitive category this year. I don't expect a whole lot from the Oscars, but I'll raise an eyebrow if Finding Dory ends up getting nominated this year.

Honestly: Thank God Finding Dory didn't get nominated. Shocked Sing beat Sausage Party for the spot

Seriously? They nominated Sing over a ton of great indie movies? There's The Red Turtle, April and the Extraordinary World, Phantom Boy, Miss Hokusai, Your Name, Long Way North, 25 April, The Little Prince... Did they even bother watching any of these before voting?

Having Finding Dory left off the list, only to have Sing make it in there seems a bit counter-intuitive... But the Golden Globes have never been that great with nominating foreign and/or indie films. (Looking back, they seem worse than the Oscars with this category.) I'm actually surprised Zucchini made it.

It does. Finding Dory, Kung Fu Panda 3 or even Sausage Party would have been better picks than Sing.ce1ticmoon wrote:Having Finding Dory left off the list, only to have Sing make it in there seems a bit counter-intuitive.

I saw an early review for Sing (Grace from Beyond the Trailer). She said Sing was actually very intelligent and all of the main characters were compelling. And Illumination Entertainment hasn't made a product I truly disliked yet so...
Plus it's a movie about the entertainment industry, I think award shows like to stroke their ego by nominating films like Sing.

Agreed. KFP3 and Sausage Party >>>> Sing, even without getting into all the indie films that blow it out of the water.Sotiris wrote:Finding Dory, Kung Fu Panda 3 or even Sausage Party would have been better picks than Sing.

Re: Oscar for Best Animated Feature 2016
So I think we can all be pretty sure that the below 3 are locks for the Oscar nomination:
Kubo and the Two Strings
Moana
Zootopia
I feel like My Life as a Zucchini has a pretty good chance of grabbing the fourth spot after the Annie/GG noms and the buzz it has been getting in Europe.
I think the fifth one will come from the following:
Finding Dory - Simply becuase it's Pixar, and it had better reception than past Pixar films that failed to snag a nom.
The Red Turtle - It hasn't been faring too well with the awards so far, but it did have the festival buzz and crical response, so I think it still has a chance.
Sing - Well, it got a GG nom, so....
Your Name - I'm sure the massive Japan/China box office gives it some buzz, plus it won the LAFCA.
I don't know how much the Academy cares about having somewhat of a balance between mainstream/indie and domestic/foreign films (they probably don't), but the past few years have had at least two indie/foreign picks, so I feel like there is a fairly good chance the fifth spot would go to either The Red Turtle orYour Name.
But you never know. BH6 took the award for 2014 when every other nominee was more infinitely more qualified, so I'm not gonna get my hopes up or anything.

Re: Oscar for Best Animated Feature 2016
Yes, the Golden Globes tend to nominate films by big studios in the animation category. I was also surprised when I heard My Life as a Zucchini was among the nominees.ce1ticmoon wrote:Having Finding Dory left off the list, only to have Sing make it in there seems a bit counter-intuitive... By the way, "How Far I'll Go" was also nominated for best song. And in the Critics' Choice Awards, apart from the Zootopia win, Disney also took home the award for Best Visual Effects, which was for The Jungle Book.
