Ok, since people here seem so focused on gender....

Can anyone recall any Disney movie in which a male character (NON VILLAIN) threw any sort of punch towards anyone outside the context of a fight, or being persecuted by the villain?

Saying a female character punching a male character is just as bad as vice versa isn't progressive, it's regressive. There was a time when it was perfectly acceptable for a man to beat a woman, and male persecution of and dominance over women still exists in many elements of society of Western culture (straight up persecution exists in other cultures). And of course, the biological differences in physical strength make the situations quite different. There is NOTHING equal in the implications of a man hitting a woman and woman hitting a man. You people make me sick.

As for Hans, he's one of the most emotionally manipulative villains ever in his relationship with Anna, and he just attempted to murder both her and her sister. He got off easy with a simple punch in the face. You people are WAY too sensitive in addition to having caveman views.

I remember in Mulan, one of the soldiers got punched by a member of the trio (Yao?) over a dragon tattoo. The first guy said something neutral, like "This tattoo protects me from harm!". :P

How about we agree that violence is bad coming from either gender?

And I go back to my point that the punch was bad because it wasn't defensive. It was petty, and after-the-fact. She could have found a more mature and worthy way to punish Hans.

And as for the Mulan reference... I dont really remember that. And odds are it was comic relief... and it sounds like it was inconsequential, and directed at a background character. And not a story point.

I understand your point so you don't need to keep explaining. It's just pathetic and ignorant to be frank. NEXT!

So wait.... You think.... that violence against men is ok? I mean NOBODY here thinks that violence against women is ok, so why should violence against men be ok?

I just..... I'm actually horrified by a lot of the people posting on this thread....

I mean.... wow.... the lack of understanding of what I thought to be a straightforward point is ASTOUNDING....

Well, computer-generated characters aren't real. If it was a live-action movie, it would still be a movie.

I don't condone violence in any form against anyone, but I still feel that one of the best moments in the entire Harry Potter film franchise is when Hermione decked Draco in Azkaban. It's been said in different ways at different times by different folks, but truth and pain are integral elements of comedy. And providing moments of catharsis s one of threatens that art exists.

I did NOT say violence against men is okay    I said the implications of a man punching a woman are FAR worse than a woman punching a man due to biological differences and the sociological history of gender relations. It's just the way it is, sorry. People are saying it's just as bad when that's not even close to being true, like it's not "just as bad" when black people say the N word. The implications are different. Educate yourselves before you say ignorant nonsense.

And sorry but people do hit each other in real life and if you can't handle it stick to watching Sofia the First.

The "POOR HANS" fangirls are a disgusting bunch, that's for sure.

I just hope this leads Disney to give hand drawn animation a chance.

Guys, Hans was gonna get punched. He led Anna to believe he loved and wanted to marry her for financial/political reasons, he left her in that room to die but first he humiliated her by saying nobody loved her, he almost murdered Elsa after telling her she had killed her sister. He DESERVED to be punched, and don't tell me "violence is never OK", I get it, it's not; but this is a movie, there has to be palpable resolutions and closure to story lines and character relationships and in this case, it was a punch.

Nobody outside of this website has even brought this up, I've seen this website rag on Tumblr for being oversensitive in its ridiculous and uncalled-for social justice drive, but this is just as bad. It's not a real issue, guys. Sometimes people get punched for cutting in line! Is it the best solution? No, but it happens, and in this case it was satisfying, just enjoy it. It's a freaking action/adventure film! Somebody's getting punched.

Plus, why even bring gender into this?! Are we saying if it was a man punching a man it would be OK? Anna shouldn't have done it because she's a woman?! This overanalyzing of a dumb little detail is so messy, nobody even cares and Hans deserved it. Can we go back to celebrating Walt Disney Pictures having the top grossing animated film of all time again for the first time since 2003?

Anna punched Hans hard enough to knock him off the boat or dock or whatever... Seems like she's strong enough to me...

And the biological difference argument is entirely subjective anyway.

Also, I'm not saying "poor Hans" at all. He was indeed the villain. I was pointing out an unfortunate double standard in a movie that appeared to try to change the way genders are traditionally portrayed onscreen.

Also, you can't really argue that it's different because men used to be allowed to abuse women. If society has recognised it's mistakes in its treatment of women it should learn from this and treat both men and women better to ensure that all genders are treated equally in the future and NO ONE becomes the victim of unnecessary violence.
