Aladdin on Broadway

Ok.. I searched but didn't find anything. So I apologize in advance if there is already a thread for this. I stumbled across this, darn me.. I've been slightly out of the loop on the theater scene lately. But apparently..

BroadwayWorld.com's Seattle sources have exclusively confirmed for us that Disney's Aladdin will indeed open at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre in July of 2011. The stage production will feature all the songs from the film as well as restored songs from early drafts of the score.

As some may already know the 5th is widely known for having out of town try-outs for a lot of successful broadway shows.

I'm just thrilled to see and hear this new incarnation of an Aladdin musical. I was pleased enough with the DCA version. But a full scale proper 2 act musical, based off Menken and Ashman's original vision for the film?! Outstanding! SO glad to be a Seattleite right now.

We already discussed this musical version here, and very unfortunately, Disney has no plans to bring this Seattle stage version to Broadway, but instead make it available for license for small theatre companies.

Does anyone know if they are planning on releasing a cast recording of the new stage show? They did for "Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular".

It would be a cast recording, not a soundtrack, and it seems likely that one will be produced in some capacity. However, this could mean it's the sort of album that's included when you buy the rights to do an amateur production of the show and not the kind of thing you could buy at Best Buy or on iTunes.

So you're saying an album will not be available to the general public?

I'm not saying it for certain won't be. I'm just saying they might go that way seeing as how they seem to be pushing the amateur production route here. If it was going to Broadway or even on tour, I'd be more confident that they'd be releasing an album to the general public.

Even if they did just make it available as a rights package, it will leak out soon enough.

My guess is the Seattle run will serve as a test to see how the reviews are and how audiences respond. After Tarzan and Little Mermaid and to a certain extend even Shrek The Musical, I think Disney has learned a lesson. (Not to mention the ongoing drama that is Spider-Man: turn of the dark).

A popular film does not equal a great Broadway show. Especially not if the creators rely simply on the popularity of the movie adaptation in question and don't bother to create something new.

Aladdin however could really work due to the rich legacy of deleted Ashman music and story lines. SO much potential here.

Yeah, but it was meant to go to Broadway even before the poor reviews came in. There's no pressure on Aladdin.

Unfortunately that could mean that since they aren't planning on doing it for Broadway, they won't care too much how it goes, they probably won't try to make it Broadway-quality. Or do you think they'll go all out and miracle of miracles it gets reviewed so well they put it on Broadway after all?

Let's not forget that Disney's most recent definition of "Broadway-quality" was the God-awful adaptation "The Little Mermaid."

Heading to Broadway or not, I love Aladdin and I love my musical theater! Being a Seattelite, I will certainly be attending this!! The 5th puts on some pretty amazing productions and has gained quite a bit of notoriety nationally, so I'm sure it willl be quite good!!
