It may be full of crazy cheese and bad acting, but this Christmas movie brings on uncontainable laughter in my family. It's fun to revisit.

Friday, December 9, 2011:

36. Love Actually (2003) - I get into arguments about this film each year, but it is definitely a Holiday film. And I like it the more that I watch it.

37. Elf (2003) - One of the very few movies with Will Ferrell that I can tolerate just a little bit. It's a funny film because of the premise and Will Ferrell doesn't try to take over the movie and make it his own like his other films.

38. Bad Santa (2003) - After viewing this I am questioning why I like this film so much. It is brash, bawdy, filled with foul language and toilet humor, but somehow Billy Bob Thornton pulls it all together. Only for those with a weird sense of humor and think Santa is just a 'sex-crazed' object of affection. Not for everyone because of its hard "R" rating or if you watch the Unrated version.

39. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) - Blu-ray - Tim Burton's dark but very poignant film done in claymation is worth a watch every year. Wonderful music and story and this film should be in everyone's Holiday film collection.

40. Going My Way (1944) - Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald bring life to this wonderful Holiday film that should be watched every year by everyone. I watched this one out of order which I didn't catch until after the fact, when I watched "The Bells of St. Mary's" last week.

My next batch of movies might not sit right with a lot of people, but they are all have something to do with the Christmas holiday season and I always them at least once during these times.

Saturday, December 10, 2011:

41. Die Hard (1988) - Bruce Wilis is a New York cop who flies into Los Angeles to see his wife for the Christmas holidays and gets involved with thieves who take her along with several other people hostage in the Nakatomi Building in a daring robbery. Lots of great one-liners, and great action sequences. Good any time of the year, but since it is Christmas and this film takes place on Christmas Eve, why not?

42. Die Hard 2: Die Harder (1990) - Another Christmas Eve and another location, supposedly Washington, D.C., but all filmed in Denver, Colorado. This time John McClain finds himself trying to save his wife along with several other airplanes filled with holiday travelers, as a group of terrorists take over an airport. Another film I watch many times, but especially at this time of the year.

43. Home Alone (1990) - Macaulay Culkin (when he was young and innocent) stars in this story about a boy who gets accidentally left behind when his family flies to Florida for Christmas. His ability to thwart thieves (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) is one of the main highlights of the film. I can watch this film anytime of the year, but Christmas is always one of the special times.

44. Home Alone 2 (1992) - Once again Macaulay Culkin's family is off for the Holidays and he gets lost in the airport and mistakenly takes the wrong plane to New York. Kevin is now alone in the Big Apple and has to try to make ends meet and several hilarious incidents take place at the Hotel (involving Tim Curry), and when he visits a toy store and runs into the "wet bandits", again played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern. Another hilarious adventure and a film that can be watched almost any time of the year.

45. The Muppets Christmas Carol (1992) - Co-starring Michael Caine we get the Muppet version of the Dickens classic story about Ebenezer Scrooge. A great family film for the Holidays.

:D

Since NASCAR is done with their season and I want to avoid the withdrawals, I watch a lot of movies on Sundays, and here's what we watched yesterday:

Sunday, December 11, 2011:

46. Babes in Toyland -(1961) - Disney's remake of "March of the Wooden Soldiers" with a stellar cast headed by Annette Funicello, Tommy Sands, Ray Bolger, and Tommy Kirk. Great holiday fun!

47. The Bishop's Wife (1947) - Loretta Young stars in the wonderful Christmas film. A must-see for the Christmas season.

48. Dutch (1991) - Ed O'Neill stars in this story of a man who volunteers to go get his girlfriend's son at prep school and bring him home for Christmas. Only to find out that the kid is not very nice. Ethan Embry and JoBeth Williams also star in this romantic comedy film set in the Holiday season.

49. Ernest Saves Christmas (1988) - Jim Varney brings his character to life in a very silly, but watchable movie for the holidays.

50. The Polar Express (2004) - Tom Hanks' motion-cap adventure about a train that akes non-believers to the North Pole to see Satna Claus. Great holiday film for the whole family.

Fun movie. I haven't seen it in its entirety in years - probably since the late 80s. It's funny seeing all that fake snow on the Universal Studios backlot, I was just waiting for Marty McFly to show up there.

A Garfield Christmas

A childhood favourite Christmas special. I try to watch this one every year.

Prep and Landing

A great new Disney featurette. Can't wait to see the sequel.

History Channel Classics: The History of Christmas

Very interesting documentary. Definitely worth checking out. Lots of stuff I didn't know about Christmas. Was interesting to see it's roots from the birth of Jesus Christ - experts don't think that he was born on the 25th of Dec, but in the spring - to the Americanization of the European celebrations.

History Channel Classics: Santa Claus

Another great documentary in this set. Tells the origins of Santa from Saint Nicholas to today's interpretations like we see in malls and on the big screen like Tim Allen's version.

Bunch more docs in this set that I'm going to watch. I picked it up at Walmart, and so far I think it's a worthy purchase. Recommended. It seems like History Channel doesn't play shows like this anymore. Instead they got crap on there like Ice Road Truckers. What's historic about truckers?

Ten days until Christmas and the movie viewing continues:

Wednesday, December 14, 2011:

51. The Santa Clause 2 (2002) - Tim Allen is back for another turn as Santa Claus and it has been eight years. Just a whole lot of fun, and a very family-friendly Holiday film.

52. Mickey's Christmas Carol (1983) Great telling of the Christmas story with all of Mickey's friends. Another great family-friendly film.

53. Diner (1982) - Friends meet at a Diner and talk about their future. A very great vehicle for some of Hollywood's younger stars which includes: Kevin Bacon, Mickey Roarke, Steve Guttenberg, Tim Daly, Daniel Stern, Ellen Barkin and Paul Reiser. Very good movie to watch just about any time of the year.

Scrooged

A Holiday staple, although I haven't watched it in a couple years. Love the opening sequence with the previews for the shows. Father Loves Beaver ROFL! And Lee Majors with the gattling gun. 8) One of the best versions of The Christmas Carol.

History Channel Classics: In Search of Christmas

Longer documentary, about 1 hr and 30 minutes. Covering the origins of Christmas, basically, Jesus' birth and the whole nativity story. Very good doc.

Trying to not let the Christmas shopping get in the way of watching movies, I picked two more to watch.

Thursday, December 15, 2011:

54. Alvin & The Chipmunks (2007) - Originally intended to highlight the favorite Christmas song for children of all ages "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't be Late)", this first of the new Chipmunk franchise only lets the song play in the background, but they do honor that is the Christmas season. Fun family veiwing.

55. The Ref (1994) - Denis Leary and Kevin Spacey vehicle about a dysfunctional family who's home is invaded by Denis Leary makes a very funny holiday movie. This can be watched any time of the year, but it seems everyone breaks it out at Christmas time.

On my own today, the house is empty until about 5 pm, so here is what I watched yesterday.

Friday, December 16, 2011:

56. Eight Crazy Night (2002) - Basically a total waste of time and money on this Adam Sandler animated film. Really not very good, but I had to get it out of the way.

57. Trading Places (1983) - Eddie Murphy, Dan Aykroyd. Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Ameche, and Ralph Bellamy along with the scene-stealing Denhom Elliott star in this very funny film, that I watch every year at this time, but a lot of other times also. There is a brief Christmas scene, so I think I can qualify it as a holiday movie. Lots of fun, and everyone looks like they had a lot of fun making this movie. And also Jamie Lee Curtis 'bares her boobs' in this one. Merry Christmas!!!!

58. We're No Angels (1955) - Humphrey Bogart, Aldo Ray and Peter Ustinov star in this feel good Christmas movie about three convicts who escape from prison just before Christmas and decide to hold up a store. But after hearing the store owner's plight they decide to stick around for a while and fix things up. Hilarious hijinks from some of Hollywood's finest actors. A must-see for all ages.

Continuing with my 100 Holiday Movie Challenge:

Saturday, December 17, 2011:

59. The Family Man (2000) - If Frank Capra were alive today and could remake "It's A Wonderful Life" it might have turned out something like this film. This is NOT a remake in any sense of the word, but it feels like you have seen it before. A successful businessman who is single, drives a Ferrari, and has a long-distance girlfriend wakes up one morning to kids jumping on the bed and a lovely wife and a mini-van that doesn't want to start. Very poignant tale that all happens around Christmas time and stars Nicholas Cage and Tea Leoni. Great holiday film.

60. Ice Harvest (2005) - John Cusack stars in this crime-caper that happens in the 12 hours of Christmas Eve. He is a cynical lawyer who, along with his best friend, a strip club owner played by Billy Bob Thornton, have swindled just over $2 million from a crime boss in Kansas City. Hilarity and Hi-jinks evolve in this quick-paced dramedy that is supposed to take place in Wichita, Kansas, but if you read the credits, was shot entirely in Chicago, Illinois.

61. Reindeer Games (2000) - With a cast that is headed by Ben Affleck, Gary Sinese and Charize Theron, you would expect this Christmas caper film to be pretty decent. Well, pretty is okay when it comes to Charlize Theron, but decent this movie is not. Filled with gaping plot holes and some very bad acting I was expecting more from this film. Affleck is a ex-con, who is released from prison and runs into his cell-mate's girlfriend. Since his cellmate died in prison he has assumed his name and hoping to assume everything else but gets involved in a Christmas heist of a casino. The movie falls apart about half way through and never revives itself. Forgot just how much I dislike this film and will probably get rid of it this year when I clean house of some un-needed DVD's.

62. Sleepless in Seattle (1993) - Tom Hanks stars in this Nora Ephron directed weeper. The story involves a man who's wife passes away and he and his son move from the East Coast to the West Coast, Seattle, to be exact. On a Christmas Eve radio show Sam (Hanks) talks about his love of his life with his wife Maggie, and a young lady lawyer in Baltimore hears the story on the radio and arranges to meet with Hanks and you know the rest of the story. Just a great remake of "An Affair to Remember" with a very good cast that includes Bill Pullman, Meg Ryan, Rob Reiner and many others. Great movie watching any time of the year but especially at Christmas.

63. Assault on Precinct 13 (2005) - Remake of the successful John Carpenter film of the same name from the 70's, this one is moved locations from Los Angeles to the East Coast and happens during the Christmas holidays. Starring Ethan Hawke, Laurence Fishburn, and Maria Bello, a precinct is closing down due to budget cuts, and their last weekend of business is between Christmas and New Year's. A convicted thief is being transported to prison when a snowstorm hits and they are forced to stop over at this precinct and word gets out to members of the gang who attempt to kill the Boss man. Great movie, even if the language gets a little coarse at times. One of my favorite films to watch anytime of the year.

64. I'll Be Home For Christmas (1998) - Jonathan Taylor Thomas star in this Walt Disney Pictures film about a college student struggling to get home after a hazing by his college classmates. Film has all the look of a direct-to-video release, which it wasn't, and despite all of the lame reviews, turns out to be a pretty good Holiday film. Not a classic, but well worth the hour-and-a-half running time.

65. The Lemon Drop Kid (1951) - Bob Hope stars in this very good holiday movie about a loser who costs his boss $10,000 dollars when he convinces his girlfriend to bet on the wrong horse. Well, the story goes he has to find a way to get the money or else, so it's Christmas time and he comes up with a plan. Hilarity ensues and this is one heck of a good movie. Marilyn Maxwell and Bob introduce the song "Silver Bells" in this movie and the song became a staple for Hope in all his years on television.

Well, I have been busy, not all happy stuff either, so even though I'm a holiday nut, I'm basically having to miss most of holiday celebrating for this year. It's tragic for me. With my dad sick last year, that wasn't much better. But now he's gone and my mom is sick, and I have a ton of work I'm trying to catch up on while caring for her, so bottom line is that I haven't sat and watched much of anything this year.

Let me see how much I can remember watching since I last posted:

Well, I just watched one on Hallmark Channel called "Christmas Magic". Normally, I wouldn't recommend made for cable Christmas movies. This one isn't too bad. Sure, it's not that original. Sort of a mix of The Bishop's Wife and that Reese Witherspoon movie where she's haunting a guy, but he gets to be with her in the end because she was just in a coma rather than dead... it's like those two movies combined, and it's got the usual, corny, nonsensical moments you find in cable Christmas movies. Still, it's got a very warm, Christmassy atmosphere that you sometimes find in the better of those types of movies, and the story is not as bad as the typical cable Christmas movies. Most importantly though, it stars the goddess Lindy Booth, whom I have adored ever since, well, since she was a blonde, ha. She looks amazing in this movie, and she plays it totally adorably after her introduction, in which she is in need of some Christmas spirit. It's actually a pretty sweet Christmas movie for something from cable, but the main appeal is definitely Lindy, who thankfully is on screen most of the time. If they ever sell this one, I'll definitely pick it up. I've never seen her in such a major role (fellow Disney fans may remember her as the blonde on "The Famous Jett Jackson).

I also recently watched both the original Miracle on 34th Street (why they were showing the colorized version, I have no idea) and, for the first time that I can remember, The Lemon Drop Kid. I really need to get a copy of Lemon Drop Kid. Good stuff (of course, I already have Miracle).

I also watched Santa Claus. That's the K. Gordon Murray film from Mexico. Man, tripp, FUN movie, even without the MST3K riffing, which I thought could have been better. I have both the regular and MST3K versions. Unfortunately, I didn't bring the MST3K one to my mom's house with me. I'm sure it's on YouTube or something though.

Let's see... Oh, I watched A Sesame Street Christmas Carol (I think that's the title). I blind bought that one, and it was a big disappointment. Oscar the Grouch is the star, so you'd think it'd be awesome, but first, the CGI ghosts of CHristmas past, present, and future were off-putting. I'm not used to CGI on Sesame Street. Second, this was just a clip show! The first clip is from the original special "Christmas Eve on Sesame Street". I have that one on DVD, and let me tell ya, you gotta get it! That was one of the first DVDs I put on this year, along with Shop Around the Corner and Christmas Vacation.

Okay, well, I may have watched some other stuff, but that's all I can remember for now.

Oh, I also watched several versions of Scrooge thanks to an all Scrooge channel that was on Veetle.com for a while. Perhaps it returns off and on. I got my fill of it for now, ha, but there are a couple of other holiday channels on there too. It's great! My mom has mostly kept the TV on Hallmark Channel this year.

Oh, and I saw that new Christmas Special about "The Elf on the Shelf", and that was the most horribly blatant commercial for that book that I've ever seen! It was just sooo insulting to the viewer!

Oh, and I saw Shrek the Halls too! Almost forgot. It's good. :)

Continuing my withdrawals from no NASCAR, I watched some more movies.

Sunday, December 18, 2011:

66. The Santa Clause 3 (2006) - Third and weakest of the Santa Clause trilogy with Tim Allen back and Martin Short trying his best to steal the scenery. Some laughs, but just basically an overlong movie.

67. Annie Hall (1977) - Diane Keaton in her Academy-award winning role in this Woody Allen comedy that leaves you feeling good all over. Kind of pushing this because it only has the one little Christmas scene in it. Still a good watch this time of the year.

68. The Apartment (1960) - Billy Wilder's Academy-award winning film starring Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine and Fred McMurray has you laughing one minute and crying the next. The story is about an insurance man (Lemmon) who figures out the quickest way to the top is to make his apartment available to bosses where they can take their mistresses, and have their little weekend trysts, until something happens to wake him up to what is going on. Great film, and it does have a very touching scene that takes place during the Christmas season.

69. It Happened On Fifth Avenue (1947) - Here is one movie that I can recommend to everyone 3-103. There is something in this film for everyone. Don Defore, Ann Harding, Gale Storm, and Charlie Ruggles star in this holiday film about a man who moves into a house and invites all his friends, and has them invite their friends and it ends up that the real homeowners are among the guests. This all takes place over the Christmas holidays and is the perfect film for this season. Just became available on DVD thanks to TCM.

70. Edward Scissorhands (1990) - Johnny Depp, Diane Weist, and Winona Ryder star in this very wonderful film that runs the gamut from being very tender and sweet to almost being very slapstick in its comedy. Lots of holiday references which is why I consider this a holiday film. A must-watch for anyone who has never seen this film.

Wow, large gap in between #5 and #6. (Been busy watching newly released films, ones that feature Apes, Penguins, and Pandas.)

Haven't seen Muppet Christmas Carol in a long while. I liked it, but prefer Mickey's rendition. My main grip is that I didn't care for the portrayals of the 3 spirits. Even so I've enjoyed this Christmas movie the most so far and have given it 3 1/2 candy canes accordingly.
