My criticism wasn't with Depp, but with Helena Bonham Carter. I personally think that nepotism has landed every role she's ever played for Tim Burton. I can think of several "actresses who sing" (as opposed to full-fledged musical theatre actresses) who could have done a better job.

I thought Helena Bonham Carter was excellent! I don't mind what may indeed very well be nepotism for her, because she's such a great actress, I don't know anything where she's ever been bad or subpar. I hope the reason you didn't like her was because you thought she should be a more like the original Angela Lansbury one, because...you're supposed to be able to do different takes on a character (within reason, still fitting how the character is written). And I liked Helena's take...better, actually.

I think Depp was great, too, but I read one review that said he didn't come to the great angry madness he should have, or something like that, and ever since then I think Depp could have gone a little more powerfully mad like the original Broadway actors.

No, I didn't expect an Angela Lansbury clone (though it's hard not to refer back to Lansbury when discussing Mrs Lovett); indeed there have been some fabulous Lovetts over the years (Beth Fowler, Dorothy Loudon, Julia McKenzie and Patti LuPone to name just a few). I just feel that Bonham Carter left something to be desired.

Geez, I don't know who or what to believe anymore. It's back on AGAIN? Whatever meds Arthur Laurents is on, someone needs to enquire about adjusting the dosage.

Further confirmation from Entertainment Weekly:

Looks like Rose will rise after all: Universal has confirmed to EW that the studio is in talks to acquire a Gypsy adaptation starring Barbra Streisand, despite reports that the project had been squashed. Apparently, both lyricist Stephen Sondheim and book writer Arthur Laurents are still on board. Warner Bros., the studio reputedly formerly attached to the project, tells EW that they never made a deal for the adaptation. (Reporting by Tanner Stransky)

I personally think Streisand would have been amazing as Rose Hovick but I guess were not going to see that anytime soon. She is so amazing and anything she does is always ultra amazing even in the comic fluff recent film Little Fockers she was superb.

Despite Laurents' passing, the project seems to be still be on, according to this article:

Sixty-nine-year-old Barbra Streisand was all set to play Mama Rose in a movie of the ultimate show biz musical, Gypsy, but then you'll recall that author Arthur Laurents decided not to go ahead with it because theater's joy is its evanescence and another Gypsy movie wasn't necessary or some such thing.

And then I heard the project was on again, Laurents somehow convinced it was a good idea as theater queens everywhere breathed a secret sigh of relief.

And then he passed!

The feisty, iron-willed writer of two shows that redefined the genre (West Side Story being the other one) died while still planning, devising, working, and directing, poetically enough.

So is Barbra's Gypsy now as off again as the title characters blouse?

I have the answer...

A very inside source tells me that Arthur had signed the deal, and it's a go!

As for Gypsy, my favorite Rose to date has been Bette Midler in the 1993 TV remake. Her performance isn't perfect, mainly because I think she forgot she was making a film and not a Broadway show. She was often at an 11, and she really needed to be at about a 6. But the part was still a perfect vehicle for Bette's talents, and Bette Midler is perfect to play a blue collar working girl like Madame Rose.

You probably will never see this ( ), but I agree with you. I thought Midler was fantastic in the role.

This is a plum role and I am hearing names that include Melissa McCarthy, who is Oscar nominated for Can You Ever Forgive Me? and who worked with Sherman-Palladino on Gilmore Girls,

Oh for goodness’ sakes. This sounds like Rosalind Russell 2.0. McCarthy is a great actor and would probably perform the book scenes very well— but judging from her recording with Streisand she is not a singer and has no business playing this especially vaunted role.

Streisand was much too old to have played the role, but I think she could still do a studio album of the songs ala Julie Andrews in The King and I. It would be a great treasure for fans of her and musical theatre.

Wow, just realized the first post is from almost 10 years ago!

For better or worse, the Streisand Gypsy is dead in the water. The last time it was in the news was four years ago when it lost its distributor and financer: https://www.playbill.com/article/barbra ... istributor

But I’d still like to hear her sing the score— she really ought to consider doing a complete, full-cast studio recording.

A few months ago, Streisand tweeted a picture of her dressed as the famous turn of the century stage actress Sarah Bernhardt, whose later life I think could provide material for a role worth pursuing.
