Was there an Aladdin Platinum Discussion Thread at the time of release in '04, like there has been for all of the releases since I've been here? I can't get it to come up in any search.

There was an official video or article (I can't remember which it is) that outlined what Disney did to enhance Aladdin for it's IMAX release. It showed comparisons between the redrawn images and the touched up backgrounds. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

They were planning to re-release Aladdin in IMAX in early 2004, but it was cancelled after the large format versions of Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King didn't do as well as hoped. I presume that Treasure Planet, which also was released in IMAX, didn't do much to help the situation with the fact that it bombed so spectacularly.

I remember the trailer for the IMAX release set for Aladdin. Personally, I'm happy it never happend, I was not a fan of the older animated films, even ones from the 90's, being blown up on the IMAX screen for all the world to see the flaws you'd miss on a normal screen.

I'm kinda sad they're already releasing Aladdin. I JUST bought the Platinum three weeks ago. Oh well, a buck isn't that much of a loss, I guess. I might consider getting the Blu if it has tons more bonus features, though that seems unlikely.

We'll be lucky if they keep half of what's already on the Platinum. Going by Disney's past actions; the trailers, publicity galleries, music videos and games (not worried about those) are as good as gone and the rest will probably be tossed the that pooh stain they call Virtual Vault. Besides, what new extras would you like to see? A Robin Williams interview maybe? I have low expectations.

With the 2 commentaries, a two-hour doc plus other stuff made for the DVD I can't imagine what new stuff I'd want on the Blu-ray. Probably an expanded HD gallery and/or more older promotional material, but that's about it.

THere was a Disney on Ice program that would be a fun inclusion and a wonderful vintage making of television special hosted by John Rhys Davies. Those shows and more advertising material would be the only additional inclusions needed to have a complete and very thorough blu ray presentation.

Oh man, I remember that Disney on Ice thing, I still have my giant souvenir book for it.

The Disney Channel making of would be cool but I don’t see them including it simply since they used most of it in A Diamond In the Rough DVD documentary (still, these old Disney Channel making of specials give me a nostalgia rush).

One thing I just thought of that would be pretty cool is an animated bloopers/outtakes session like The Lion King got. Imagine seeing Genie turn into John Wayne like originally intended, instead of Jack Nicholson, only as a blooper. I’m sure Robin Williams will provide plenty of caricatures for them to work off of with his mile-a-minute Genie improve. Could be really cool seeing these alternate takes.

At the end of the day, while I’d love to see additional content like the Disney Channel making of special, an unedited “Arabian Nights” (one of Ashman’s last songs), a retrospective Robin Williams interview, animated bloopers and additional publicity material (including things like the Disney on Ice show, Aladdin - A Musical Spectacular, and tons of additional theme park material); I’d be absolutely shocked if they give us even 1/3 of what the Platinum Edition already has and if it didn’t use the Virtual Vault monstrosity.
